Anyone else start off in the adult side of the Internet?

I am new to the Warrior Forum, but am curious as to how many Warriors have played or are playing in the adult space, and how many that started there have given up residence in "Silicone Valley" and now only work mainstream IM?

I co-founded MrSkin.com and learned many of my best techniques there. But it seems like adult advertising today has taken a back seat to mainstream techniques. Quite a reversal from the days when adult was known to be cutting edge. Is adult site marketing still cutting edge?

Cheers,

Adult webmasters are some of the most savvy internet marketers out there. Those are the ones that know what works and what does not work.

We can learn a lot from them.

I set up a free 'pictures' site a few years ago as a test and it was the easiest traffic I ever got, almost effortless.

The main thing you need to remember is that it's a business not a hobby so you need to be able to convert those visitors into customers.. and thats where you're going to face fierce competition. Build a better mousetrap (offer) than your competitors and you just might find it worthwhile

A lot of people have 'issues' with building Adult websites, thats their problem not yours.

Not in the 'adult' niche, not sure if they are cutting edge... but I do know
    that CPA networks are hot.

I know because an expert taught it in a fantastic presentation I recently
listened to as part of Yanik's UG 4.

He also shares your name, Jim

So, thank YOU for an outstanding lesson you shared in that presentation,
it helped me enormously in planning to use CPA as part of my work online.

    All success
    Dr.Mani

P.S. - I told Harlan about you, and he'll likely be in touch too.

P.P.S. - Sorry if this comment takes the discussion off topic - I'll return
you to your regularly scheduled channel!

Thanks for the kind words. I am kinda new to forums, so please be kind.

And yes, CPA Networks are hot. But it really isn't for amateurs, since the distribution costs are high. The key is having both front end and back end satisfied.

Geez that sounded like a plot for an adult movie. ;-)

I just had a heart attack - too f*cking classic seeing my man Lillig here.

Forums and Jim Lillig just don't mix. ;-)

And Jim, I still think in some ways they're still cutting edge - but the warez community has some pretty crazy SEO stuff going on that nobody in IM talks about.

I always felt that the dirtiest of markets online are the markets that spawn the most innovation - and always will, because their industries thrive on any ounce of new cutting edge strategy.

When's the last time you saw marketers looking carefully into AFF's marketing strategies and putting it into practice for their biz? (Whoa dude, I just got hit with one of those strokes of genius again).

We should just talk about this tomorrow eh.

    Steve

PS. There is 1 user I know of who started in adult/viagra/entertainment here - a buddy too - wait for him to expose himself if he wants.

Can you explain what you mean by "the warez community" and "AFF's marketing". Thanks.

Hey Jim welcome to the WF!

Heard lots of cool things about you from our mutual bud steve "i'm the bangle bling king" iser...

I actually got started making serious cash in mid '97 with adult web sites.

As far as innovation in the adult biz goes today I still believe you can learn a lot from adult sites and there operators. Have to agree with Steve and say warez & torrent sites lead very strongly in developing new stuff as well. They've been a strong source of traffic as well for adult webmasters.

Anyways, good to see you dropping by here now & sharing your knowledge & experience... I'm sure it will liven up the forum just that little bit more

I started in adult in 2001 building and submitting galleries. I eventually ran a few small TGPs and some adult niche blogs. Didn't make sh*t in the beginning, but I was able to go full time after 10 months. I'm still getting rebills from joins 4-5 years ago

I'm about 85% in mainstream stuff these days. Every now and then I slip over to GFY for some shenanigans LOL.

Years and years ago I ran, with a partner, a very successful adult Web site. At one point we were partnered with Persian Kitty and we were crippling multiple servers with the traffic we were getting.

Aha - the ******* exposes himself.

    Bangle bling king - pft.

Nowdays all JB does is talk about wanting to go on the internet porn sets with his
"best buddy" from that reality tv show (how did I already forget).

The only whack thing about torrent traffic is how devious it is with all the fake
torrents on public tracker sites - hard to believe that they even convert well
    sometimes.

Haven't kept up with torrent, but when I was with Almond, we did a lot of PPC on those terms and the traffic was unending. I actually gave a speech on Bittorrent at Yanik's 1st Underground. I hailed it as the delivery platform of the future for advertisers. Mind you, this was before YouTube ever existed. In my opinion, BT is a game changing technology, but ISP's are very afraid of it. Check out this article on how Comcast users can still enjoy BT's benefits. see torrentfreak . com (search bypass comcast)

What they were doing in P2P with DRM on WMV files was very cutting edge I thought, in that you turned P2P into a marketplace for your own goods. Worked well for adult since that was, besides music and movies, the most searched for.

Glad to see that this board has some "dark siders".

    Jim.

I still think Torrents are awesome - I've been using em since gosh.. back when Brahm launched classic BitTorrent client.

There's a transition going on that's still not popular yet... allowing video streaming from torrents as they download. Could be a good opportunity for folks.

This obviously puts little strain on servers - something YouTube should probably adapt - who knows, but we all know the server strains are costing their profit margins big time (and their failure to really monetize video).

I started marketing for aff about a decade ago - I didn't realize then how adult they were. I just sent traffic, and received my monthly checks. I still get checks from them once in a while.

Back then I was spamming the newsgroups and was making $500 a day easy. But that was back when spam was still a meat product, and not a dirty word. I also had aol, ICQ, and Mirc chat bots running 24/7. Yes - I was hated by many. But I was younger then. Now I only run the legit stuff, with legit traffic.

Hey guys - where can I read more... I've always been fascinated by all the "unconventional" and sometimes "black hat" marketing that was going on in the adult and warez industry but never really thought there was a place I could read about it... this thread got me all excited once more.

I got my start in adult back in 2001, made a few free site mostly. Learned basic html from some of the forums. Never made a lot from it, but I couldn't put the time needed into it. I got out of the biz all together for awhile but there's something about this stuff that is addicting. So I looked to start up again, but at the time there was so much limbo in the 2257 rules that I just decided to go with a mainstream site.

I still use a lot of the marketing techniques I learned with it. And still keep up with a couple of the forums. There's a lot there that can be incorporated into mainstream, and some that can't. I learned from that rare group of adult webmasters that didn't get int o the shady practices of warez and stuff though.

I know a couple of adult webmasters. Or used to know. All of them have migrated to mainstream because it is more profitable.

True, they invented a lot of the stuff we use today, but not all of them can bring home the traffic. There are just as many -if not more- adult webmasters that are staring at their webstats and seeing tumbleweed as mainstream folks.

Some of the more creative guys/gals started off in the adult industry and brought their knowledge over to the mainstream.

This is a formula for big cash. Take a concept that is working well in one industry, adapt it and apply to a new industry.
