    Vbulletin, without question.

It's what WF uses, I use it on all my forums and it's always served me well.

With that said, the latest verion (4) has a lot of problems so it might be worth waiting until they get that sorted out.

I would go with vbulletin for the fact that you can than run vBSEO.
Any script will work, but it seems paid scripts (IPB-vB) are easier to work with, update, and modify.

First I do want to mention that forums are a tough gig. I was getting over a hundred spammers for each genuine sign up before I added an email verify. Still get quite a lot with it.

And partly because of that I would go with something free for awhile to try out the niche. Phpbb is probably the most popular one, but Simple Machines is also really good.

A couple of decent sized boards use SMF. These are both interesting too, and IM related.

Here is one that has over 3 million posts.

Red and White Kop Liverpool FC Forum - Index

There is a support forum (really large) for SMF with good, fast answers and help. It's not the perfect solution. There is an upgrade coming out soon. But mostly I've actually enjoyed working with it.

Since I had to open my notes for this anyway, here is the best looking SMF theme I ran across. (Completely subjective of course and opinions will vary.)
