Thinking of giving up on Internet marketing?

Here's a little tough love (with the emphasis on the love)...

If you are thinking of giving up on Internet marketing then...

...go ahead!

That's right: give up.

No-one cares. You won't be missed.

There are plenty of other passionate, committed, determined, disciplined entrepreneurs who will stay in this game long after you have been and gone.

There are plenty of other people who will leave you half-way up the mountain, when the air starts to get thin, the climb gets steeper, and the summit is still a long way away.

There are plenty of others who LOVE Internet marketing so much that, despite all the challenges, the hard work, and no matter how long it takes, they would never dream of giving up.

Which brings me to a question: why are you thinking of quitting?

Is it because it's too difficult to make a living (or any money at all) from Internet marketing?

Or is it because, at the end of the day, you don't really love Internet marketing enough to keep on going when it gets really tough?

You see, it's not all that hard to make money from Internet marketing... if you are willing to do what it takes... and to do what it takes ultimately means loving this business to the point where you'll persist despite the (many) challenges.

And that's why, if you are thinking of giving up... maybe you really should give up. Because maybe you don't really love Internet marketing enough to make it in this business.

You may have been attracted by the promise of quick riches (what a cruel joke) or the 'Internet marketing lifestyle' (oh, didn't anyone tell you that it involves sitting at a computer?) or some other lie... but the reality is that Internet marketing - just like any other pursuit - has its own share of challenges and rewards.

For some - perhaps for you - the rewards just don't offset the challenges. For example, if you really don't like spending time alone, staring at a computer screen for hours on end... you should probably pursue something else.

Okay, so maybe you've read this and you really do love Internet marketing but have been considering giving up because you've been struggling, nothing you've tried has worked, etc. In that case, it's time to do some heavy-duty thinking about what has stopped, or is stopping, you from achieving your goals.

-- Lack of focus?
-- Trying to do too many things, and not finishing any one thing?
-- Not putting in the necessary hours?
-- Working in the business, not on the business?
-- Unrealistic expectations?

Whatever the reason... there WILL be a reason (or more than one), and when you know what it is you can make the necessary changes in order to get back on track.

Bottom line: if you are thinking of giving up on Internet marketing, ask yourself WHY you feel that way. Chances are, it has more to do with YOU than it has to do with Internet marketing.

Apologies if this message sounds a little harsh, but as I said, it's meant as a dose of tough love. I want to see more people succeed in Internet marketing because I know it can be done. But it all starts with having the right mindset - being genuinely passionate about Internet marketing, being willing to learn and do what it takes to succeed, and not letting ANYTHING stand in your way.

People fail at every pursuit so why would starting a business online be any different? It amazes me how many people are actually surprised by the fact that not everyone is successful, not everyone lives a life of abundance where they are free to pursue other activities, and still have a source of income coming in from their business. This is indeed a business that involves work and quite a bit of it. In many respects its actually harder than a 9-5 job, as you feel the need to work your business all of the time. Many of us work 7 days out of the week including holidays and spend the majority of our time online doing things related to our businesses. This by no means is any sort of alternative to actually working for a living.

    Anna, Good post.

I've seen a few threads lately where someone is on the verge of quitting.
Been there and felt that way my self in the past. You just have to keep the
    faith and believe in yourself.

The bottom line is that most people are better off working for someone else. I don't mean that in a bad way. There are very intelligent people out there who can't create something out of nothing for themselves, but find success at their 9-5.

For those that really want it, I have always thought the forums play a role in what happens. If you spend too much time on the forums and believe most of what you read, you are going to crash and burn. I think that is the downfall for most. But at the same time there is a lot of valuable info out there being posted if you know when to read between the lines.

IMO far more problematic are the mentors/gurus/coaches pushing their snakeoil services. These are the people who have put the ideas out there that a noob needs no special skills and only a little bit of time each day to earn a great income. Total BS.

Everyone has their own thing that motivates them. For you it's motivational speakers. For someone else it might be looking at travel magazines, test driving expensive cars, putting a photo of their kids on their desk, trying on expensive clothes, listening to music, driving through high class neighborhoods, etc... etc...

In the context that she put it in, yes it does. With the millions of people that are trying to make a living or even just a few bucks online, when one person quits, they are quickly forgotten. That's just the reality.

@ Anna, sometimes tough love can be a good thing. I've written in this forum many times that quitting is easy. People quit relationships, some people quit on their kids, some people quit their own lives and run on auto pilot......Jon Tees hit the nail on the head too. Everyone simply isn't cut out for this. I know this one lady who I've kept in touch for nearly 8 years who is still trying to figure out how to grow her list!

Over the years I've learned that people do not make money for one or more of the following reasons:

    * They jump from one thing to another
    * They treat this like a hobby
    * They don't test or track anything
    * They don't pay close attention to what's working and what's not working
    * They try to do everything on their own

And the biggest one of all....

    * They don't have the right mindset

I'll never forget all the long days that I put in just educating myself, let alone the longer hours I put in learning one thing at a time, implementing it until I learned it well enough to make a profit before I moved onto the next thing. Today I work long hours because I choose to (I'm addicted to creating new revenue streams).

Quitting is easy, most people end up quitting because this is not as easy as some marketers hype it up to be. With all the "copy" and "paste" sales copy out there or "be up and running in 15 minutes", I don't blame some people for buying into the hype and forgetting the reality that this is a business that takes focus and a lot of discipline. The good news is that you can build your business in a way where it can be virtually hands free if you want it to.

    Good post Anna.

People tend to forget that working online is still a BUSINESS. You have to treat it like one. YOu will have the same challenges as with an offline business. There is no such thing as a get-rich-quick business, or a totally hands-free, no-work business unless you outsource everything.

actually you can outsource most things once you got your biz on course.. my site tvlinko.com i developed the site from the ground up (took me half a year) then network with other sites and get referral traffic till i have a constant stream of income.
now i make over 10G a month and able to outsource everything from programming, SEO, development, writing team on elance.com to indians (great workers) for less than $2000 a month overhead.

    Great post, Anna.

It took me 2+ years to figure out that I should focus on what I'm *good at* rather than simply following the crowd.

I consider that a priceless education. Some (more clever than I) would've figured that out sooner. And, unfortunately, others might've given up halfway through...and not realized their potential.

    Cheers,

depends on what you mean by making a living. 1k a month? 2k?
i'd feel sick to my stomach if i know that my site is only making 10k a month..

Ultimately, what it all comes down to is one thing for everything we do
          in our lives.

How important is it to you?

If you can answer that question honestly, you'll give yourself a pretty good

People give up to soon with things in general. "OMG its not working!" and BAM there we go AGAIN.

Focus on what you can do best, and once you found something that you like to do on the web, tweak it, make it better and rince and repeat.

    Or give up... Less competition...

If you like what you do you, then there's no quitting... only reason anyone thinks of quiting is if they are doing what they hate, and if they hate it, then they should quit and do what they like.

Not everyone is business oriented though, so stick or switch to what you know and love and forget about the hottest niche that you have no clue about.

If you want to do business online then treat your Internet business as a business and you'll have no problem doing what it needs to be done... and properly too.... if you were planning to set up an offline business, I'm sure you would be prepared to get an office, hire a secretary, invest in equipment, talk to clients, print flyers, advertise in magaines and newspaper...etc

But too often when it comes to the Internet, because it's easy to purchase a domain name, setup a sales page and a paypal button, then all common sense about running a business suddenly goes out the window... your goal is just to get the money now be doing everything wrong.

just like Gordon brown said... "Get Real"

When ever someone thinks of stopping/quitting, they really need to think of their WHY.

The WHY is the reason that looked into IM to begin with, if the WHY does not overpower the QUIT, then QUIT they will. If you are someone who is thinking of quitting, always know your WHY. The WHY will push you forward. IM is not hard, but it is definitely not easy.

Focus on your WHY, enjoy the journey, keep pushing forward. Good Luck

2 words to become persistent: personal development.

Make personal development your friend. If you're not playing Bob Proctor, Tony Robbins, or whatever guru of choice CDs in the background all day long it's your fault.

You can have all the practical skills in the world but if you don't have a hardcore success consciousness you're dead in this game. Obsess over personal development and you'll be great. Ignore it and you'll be average or will quite.

I meditate, visualize, state affirmations, and read/listen to motivational CD's for hours a day. Whenever I neglected personal development in the past I struggled. Over the past 2 months I've rededicated myself and money flows to me with ease. I love what I'm doing and I seem to attract like-minded prospects, team members, and really cool friends. It's all because the mental tools are becoming more powerful every day.

Don't neglect your PD folks! With it you'll never quit.

Information over load is a major problem ... But again, unless you know various aspects of
IM - Website building, Article marketing, PPC, PPV, CPA, SEO, KW research and the
the big headache of deciding on a loads of IM tools that you need to evaluate for
your needs and budget.... It becomes a nightmare for the newbie.

But again that is part of the learning process and once you go past that then focus
on few systems and follow through to the end... And yes don't give up..
Why? ...Do you have a better plan?

    Well said Anna.

In the end I think those who mistakenly expect Internet Marketing to bring them quick riches and fail, they're the ones who will go away pretty fast. Some may see the potential and move to the group below, but many will cry scam and never give IM another look again.

    ------------

Then you have the ones that have a entrepreneurish mind and hate their job and love the Internet and would do anything to make a living online. They may fail for months or years but ultimately they keep trying, never give up and eventually find their way.

    ------------

Finally you have the people who just want to try Internet Marketing and may give it a honest effort but ultimately they don't want it bad enough. They don't try very hard and try the wrong wthings and in the end they fail and move on with their lives. These people don't deserve success in Internet Marketing. Why shouldn't they work hard like the above group? What makes them deserve instant success? They don't!

Simply put...If you give up, you deserve to fail in the first place!

This isn't rocket science here. You don't need some natural ability like you would to be a singer or a football player. You just need to research, ask questions, follow a plan and work hard.

Believe me when I say making you first $1 is one of the most important things an aspiring Internet Marketer will ever do.

If you quit online marketing on reason, you will definitely quit the next business for another reason. You only succeed when you stop seeing reasons why you can succeed and start focusing on why you must succeed.

Well, I was going to keep my mouth shut, my fingers off the keyboard...until a person wrote, "You know what, sister..."

First: Is she your sister? You didn't say so, and you've not posted another comment or rebuttal, so...not your sis, huh? Bummer dude.

That phrase and the dismissive, "sister," by the way a clear and present 'put down'...if you'd only said, "Right on, sistah...you rock," OR even "Hey sistah...I disagree...blah, blah, blah..." you'd have been on much more solid ground, anyway, that phrase seems to dis-respect (dis) Anna.

Here's the FACT, JACK, Anna is the real deal, she publishes an internet newsletter that has more info, solid info about internet marketing, than most people can absorb. She writes about real-world experiences and her own experiences. She's funny...you must see her in a purple wig...and she's cute, and very pretty...and more importantly...she's very, very, smart. Smarter than me, smarter than most.

Here's the Big Deal, she's helpful, you can ask her, she'll tell you and help you, she will give you Sound Advice from her 'experience' not some theory, and as a giving person, she's happy to do so.

Your comment about whether or not someone will be missed may or may not be accurate...buy why the 'put down,' and you did attempt to put down someone who is speaking from THE HEART, THE MIND, and her own struggles and experience as an internet marketer? What did you gain from that? What were we supposed to gain? And you made a one, small sentence statement, maybe just your opinion, which you're entitled to, but how did that further the discussion?

For the record: Anna said what I've wanted to say when I've seen these posts. Whether you KNOW you Can, or whether you believe you Can't, your right. Give up, you go under....keep moving forward...you'll be successful, nothing can stop you if you just keep moving forward. One step at a time.

      Thanks Anna,

    Watch ya

The problem is A lot of people will have high expectations of earning a lot of money fast from the internet. They have the mindset of believing that success will come easy. This will usually not happen, and they will end up getting frustrated and quit. Earning money on the internet is difficult. There's no magic button that is going to generate you tons and tons of cash. It takes hard work. It is your mindset that determines the amount of effort that you are willing to put in to became an internet success.

I have been making a full-time living online for ten years now.

It has been a blast! Has taken me all over the world - 37 times in the last 4 years alone.

That said, as I read your post I couldn't help thinking about all the people in IM who specialize in selling hope to the hopeless.

      You know what I mean...

      - - Sub-standard products that promise the earth but deliver next to nothing.

-- Guru's who promote each others products with amazing monotony.

      - - Inflated income claims.

      - - Seminar presenters whose ONLY aim is to 'Get Money from These People at ANY Cost'

      -- False promises.

      - - Hype.

      - - Exaggerated claims

      - - Slick promoters who fail to pay affiliates. (Obviously I can't name names but some have been doing it for YEARS and still are considered Guru's)

Is it any wonder that many people lose belief, trust and focus?

Instead - why not post ten things that people could do if they feel like quitting?

And, I am sorry but I must take laser- specific exception to your assumption that people who quit won't be missed and that no one cares.

      You Are Dead Wrong.

Many of us grieve over those who quit - over their broken dreams and their unfulfilled and evaporated hopes and long to see the stumbling blocks removed from their pathways.

So whilst it might make you feel superior to give the 'Marines' pep talk. "Look at all those losers - it is their fault for not being strong enough - glad WE aren't like them! etc"

The reality is we should be addressing the very real concerns and issues people have that are making them quit.

I don't give a rats patootie if the whole lot of you up and left tonight. lol

Even if you stop selling things (or trying to sell things) on the internet, the good news is that the bulk of you very likely will still buy things on the internet - which is all I need to know.

I agree with your observation. It's sickening.

Instead - why not post ten things that people could do if they feel like quitting?
Good idea. I just wanted to post something else that I felt needed to be said.

"Look at all those losers - it is their fault for not being strong enough - glad WE aren't like them! etc"
My point in saying 'you won't be missed' is not that friends, colleagues, customers and others who've developed a relationship with you won't miss you, but that, overall, the market won't miss you.

The harsh reality is that the world moves on and people and businesses who come and go are quickly forgotten. This isn't just a reality in the Internet marketing world. Some 80 percent of small businesses fail in the first year or so, and they too get forgotten. Again, not by the people close to them, but by the market in general.

Anyway, I accept that making a tough love statement like that won't appeal to (and will actually turn off) some people. It doesn't make me feel superior though. The reason for making my initial post was to prompt people to really think about why they chose Internet marketing in the first place. As others have said above, often the best thing you can do to keep going when challenges emerge is to recall WHY you're in this business. If you have a strong enough WHY you will keep going, no matter what.

The reality is we should be addressing the very real concerns and issues people have that are making them quit.
I agree and I believe one of the biggest reasons people quit is because they come into this industry with the wrong expectations in the first place (often cultivated by the fraudsters). When they realize what Internet marketing is really about and what it really takes to succeed they can lose motivation and want to quit. In many cases they should quit because Internet marketing is not for them. In other cases, they may realize that they love Internet marketing after all and just need encouragement, inspiration - and practical help - to keep going.

You may have some other thoughts on this, and I would love to hear them. This is a good discussion.

I have been tempted a few times to give up, because it looks so difficult to produce some income, but I keep going because I really need to improve my family's situation.

Sometimes I am really disappointed when I try some opportunity which promises thousands of dollars each month and then I discover that the results are really poor.

Sometimes I am tempted to buy the next great business opportunity which seems to be a real promise, but I have decided that is better to keep working on a few opportunities and wait for the results in due time

One day my five year old girl came from school and told me that she had learned a new word. I asked what the word was - she said, perseverance. I asked, what does that mean? She said, it's a big word for "sticking to it". I guest it's worth sticking to IM no matter how hard it seems at times. It eventually will result in success. That's the universal law. You have to be around long enough to see results. Thanks for sharing. I love the tough love concept. It really opens up your mind and also makes you think that there are people who care.

Your post reminds me of what Tom Hanks said to Geena Davis in the movie "A League of Their Own": "It's SUPPOSED to be hard. If it were easy, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great."

In defense of those that are at the end of their rope with IM though, I would say it CAN be very difficult when there's so much hype and shysters selling half-baked plans for making money on the Internet. The wasted time, the money you've spent that you don't have, etc. The worst part of it all though is that it takes something worse: your dreams.

And when it seems like no one is listening or no one will help... Well, I've been there.

But as you said: that's when you press on through the difficulty to find your passion and niche in IM and figure out how to be successful. Fortunately, there are some FINE people, people with integrity, who are willing to share their secrets and know-how of IM success. Yes, you'll pay a price for it. But the value is FAR more than the price.

I think that too often, Warriors are stuck in a poverty mentality, unwilling to pay for things. Yes, money's tight and you need to be careful with your dollars. But buying at least one good homestudy course or going to at least one good workshop will shortcut the learning curve and process like you wouldn't believe.

I lost my day job in Feb. and decided to use the sudden freedom I have to launch my business in a serious way. Fortunately, all of the research I've done and HUNDREDS of hours I've spent online learning IM are now being put to good use. And I'm ASTOUNDED at the information that's available, whether it's in a PDF e-book, physical homestudy course, or a live event. Anything you want to know, you can find it, if you're willing to dig a little and pay for it.

Some things cost more than others and the information is there at all price levels. And for those that are really tight on cash, well, there's the Warrior Forum.

I'm finishing up the manuscript of my book. I found a self-publishing solution I LOVE. My designer is finishing my two new Web sites. I'm getting ready to launch in the next 1-2 months and am crazy busy right now behind the scenes. I'm SOOOO nervous, a little scared about whether this will actually succeed. But I'm just AMAZED at everything that's come together to make this happen for me.

I lost my job, but suddenly I had the time to do what I've been wanting to do for a long time. And amazingly, the resources were there too. It truly is "a God thing" as the saying goes. I'm in complete gratitude for the amazing people, information and resources that have come my way to make this a reality. Though I'm nervous, I feel really good about what I'm doing.

And when I look at it from a no-nonsense, business standpoint (as objectively as possible), I don't honestly think it will be a complete flop. The launch of my book and businesses might not happen exactly as I envision, but I've done my homework thoroughly and I DON'T believe I'll completely fail at this.

    I'm excited!

It’s weird how some people are ready to give up if they haven’t reached their goals of making a six figure income in less than a year, while others keep plugging away after having made little to no money at all over the course of several years.

    Great post!
That reminds me all the times I was this much of quitting every time a site was deindexed or the rank drops from page 1 to 10 or have not enough sales to reach the minimum for a check in a week... But I'm still standing and struggling because I love this job.

Instead of big goals I turned my focus on get one dollar at time... and it works!

Now every week I have my check.

So if someone wants to quit... go ahead... many of the quitters comes back to try again anyway...

    Preach it, Sista!

But seriously, people give up because they have no idea what they're doing and nobody is telling them how to do it the right way.

It has nothing to do with "dedication", it's simply the fact that they can't make money because there is too much bull**** floating around, especially the "get rich quick" stuff.

    You know, Anna.

That was a good post. There were times where I was tempted to give up. (I didn't really want to give up) Plus I had to deal with those types of naysayers that go out of their way to tell me that it won't work for me. (Isn't it nice when people have so much time on their hands that they seek you out and bash you.)

I didn't listen to them. I was at internet marketing for 11 months now. I didn't see results until last month.

My problem was that I didn't take the time to see how successful businesses worked. I didn't take the time to learn about backlinks, social networking and bookmarking. I just figured on creating content and then maybe people will see it.

I finally figured out that I would actually have to go promote my site through article marketing, bookmarketing and a variety of other things. At the same time, I have to keep my site updated frequently so it seems alive.

I'm finally getting some income in and my click value is very high.

    This is a great thread.
