My Introduction, and Getting Back To Online Marketing

Hi, new here, though I've posted off and on to other IM forums in the past. I got into the whole marketing thing back in the beginning of '06, when I bought a $200 course. I went on to create a site, etc, but due to a combination of using outdated info, not knowing where to go to get the correct info, using useless traffic generation and advertising methods, etc, all my efforts fell flat. All that, plus I couldn't really get my head around how to create a product from what I knew that would really be of any connection to something people would be interested in.

After just a few months, and realizing I couldn't afford to spend another dime on advertising, etc,.....I gave up.

My mistakes? Believing a bunch of hype and starting too quickly (and starting before I really had something of value to offer-my own product). I also didn't have enough money to do what I was trying to do at the time, and didn't know about various things that can be done for completely free.

I'm not here to complain....just to provide context

Okay, fast forward about 4 1/2 years. Since then in my spare time I've had a lot of times where I've gotten back into looking at it again. There's just no stopping my fascination with it. Music is definitely my first love, but online marketing is my second! Every once in a while I would look into various marketing blogs, learning interesting stuff that I wished I had known from the get go.

I've seen a lot of amazing things, witnessed con-men, been disgusted with some marketers claiming all kinds of things I knew couldn't be true. I've also seen a lot of people that I could tell really were making a living online, and were telling the truth. I've really sacrificed a lot of my free time just simply reading. In many ways I feel like I've sort of graduated, but at the same time, I'm humble and know that I have so much to learn.

And, I don't want to get too far off the subject, but is there anyone else here that believes it always seems to be overemphasized how FAST an online business can be set up? I mean, it can actually be a complicated affair. I just think there's not enough honesty concerning that, but maybe I'm not exactly right on this.

Well, basically, here's where I'm at now. I've had several ideas for products and various techniques I could use. My areas of interest seem to be wording, and how things are presented. I love to admire a good sales letter.

To this day, after all this time I still haven't set up a business after that first time. Maybe part of it is that I made a promise to myself that the next time I tried this, I wasn't going to put money into it until either my finances had improved, or I had found a way to start it out for free, see that it really works, and then use my earnings to fund really getting it off the ground. The other reason is that I didn't want to go through the heartache of failing again, but as I said earlier, there's just no resisting my fascination with this. Maybe the time has come.

So now I'm here, and like I said, I have some ideas for products I could develop and sell, but I'm just not sure if I have have enough info to develop them. Also, and this is kind of embarrassing, but I seem to have a real problem with just sticking with anything. Over the last few months, I've really been working on my songwriting, and I still want that to be my main focus, but if I do only that I'll go crazy, so I would like to get a little bit further into this stuff again and just see where it goes.

I started reading a post on here called "How Can This Forum Make You $50,000 Or More?" (sorry, I can't post the link yet, but it's on the old forum) just last night and I definitely find it interesting. Sorry if I've sorted of rambled on in this post, but I just wanted to provide a little bit of story as to how I ended up on the Warrior Forum.

I would love to know what it feels like to make my first sale. That's one reason I'm back to seeing if I can pursue this. But this time I'm arming myself with knowledge....this time I know to look at this as something that will probably take years, but in the end could greatly benefit me. I'm thinking long-term now, and my advice is that's the best way to go. Anything worth doing is worth taking time to make sure it's done right. Sometimes I wonder where I would be right now if I had kept trying with IM those years ago. Maybe I wouldn't be working at McDonald's right now (though I'm grateful for a job)!

I sense you're looking for a sensible tip or two (not 3 that'll confus you too much)

Find someone you can trust. You believe you can trust. And be guided by them. Don't fly off in evry direction at one.

Thanks, I can't wait to soak up the info. It's going to be interesting, that's for sure. I'm also curious to see if some of my ideas are already common knowledge or not.

Have you considered writing product reviews for the many marketers promoting Amazon products?

After reading your post I came away with the impression that writing is "in your blood."

Well, thanks! Actually, it took me quite a while to put that post together. I'm not sure if writing copy is what I would want to do (except for websites I may set up), but what really stands out to me is things like sales letters. I think I might enjoy working on things like that.

I'm not sure if I'll ever be interested too much in affiliate marketing, but I'm not going to rule it out, especially if something I'm really interested in comes along.
