I think a lot of people are attracted to IM because they can be independent and create a business on their own without a lot of overhead, employees, and all the negative that comes with a traditional business.

Lately I've been reflecting on those that have made it really big in this business and I see a pattern. They all have had other people either directly hired or have outsourced stuff to get to any meaningful size.

I tend to be the lone wolf type that likes to do everything alone, but lately I've seen the results of having others do things for me and I like what I see. While I sleep, someone is putting up a site or fixing a technical problem. When I'm tending my child someone is writing an article for me. When I am having lunch, someone is making a graphic for me.

Even working alone other people are needed to succeed. They are called customers.

Its all how one puts things together with people that make the difference. Studying and understanding human nature is essential for selling to customers and dealing with employees and outsourcing.

Google would have never happened without two guys going to other people for financing, inspiration, marketing, etc. Eban Pagan would be a relative unknown if he did everything on his own. Mark Cuban would be just a maverick tech guy instead of owner of the Dallas Mavericks without other people.

Like it or not, we all need other people.

    Hi Scott,
I think the beauty of IM is anyone can start with little or no overheads, no office or employees. However as you grow it's best to get others do stuff that you aren't great at or takes a lot of time. I think this helps you diversify within the IM field if you so wish (as many of the main players seem to do).
Anyway bottom line for me if I can outsource lots of stuff so I have more free time then that's what I'll do! No point in having he financial rewards but no time to chill with it!

I have no desire for an office or staff.

I do have a system for outsourcing stuff I do not want to do.

A lot comes down to your definition of "Making it big".

If you mean financial independance and family time - that is still possible without having staff, offices or a big public profile.
