CLUELESS list management

If the email excerpts below are from a member here - sorry, but this is clueless.

I'm cleaning up data from my computer, and I have you on a list.
I'm going to assume you signed up for more information in regards to sales & marketing, or your email came through to me from some co-registration sign ups.

We are closing shop.....and when we re-open the free coaching will switch to paid coaching.

Thus, I'm emailing old lists to see if they want to still get in for free while we still are offering it.
What's the problem? This person doesn't know what I signed up for or why I'm on his list....or maybe it was from co-registration....???

The "lessons" on the site are strictly newbie-targeted so the idea that I signed up for them is remote. The "lessons" on the site were added in the past 30 days and require a login - and I would never have created a login for those lessons.

Don't think I'm on an "old list" - as a search reveals I have NEVER had an email from this person before. No opt in email, no thank you email....nothing.

I'm not claiming spam - there's a chance I downloaded a report here at some time. What I do know is that I didn't sign up for a course, and if I had seen that website I wouldn't have had any interest - "Here is who I am - I am a millionaire" (with no name) doesn't cut it.

My point is this:

If you are going to build mailing lists - know what your purpose is. Collecting email addresses just to send an unrelated "join now" promotion is not likely to get a good response.

If you have a list you should know where those emails came from - and why they signed up. If you are cross promoting to your lists (a good tactic)....this is isn't to way to do it.

P.S. If this is YOUR email - you can do better!
