Which design do you prefer?

Which one do you prefer, but in terms of marketing? I'm not sure if going with a simple one like the first or a little more complex one like the 2nd would be better.

I'm also not sure if really pretty-looking websites with lots of graphics will give the buyer more of a reason to buy or not.

I'm going to have a new website built and I seriously have no idea what's going to work for marketing purposes. I guess I'll have to find someone that's experienced with this kind of thing first and get them to guide me along when it's being built.

As a consumer, if I were looking for a tutorial or content site then I'd prefer number 2. It's "cleaner" and easier to read.

I agree. 2nd one has better colors, easy on the eyes and overall looks real nice and clean. I've also been there before, and saw their YouTube videos!

I like the second one ... looks much cleaner and less HYPE, if you know what I mean

I never really like using too much hype but it's still one of the best ocnversion-boosters. Second design is my favorite of the two.

I would go with the second one too, from experience it's always best to have a clean fresh looking site. If it's the opposite it can leave potential customers feeling overwhelmed.

When you build your very first website, your natural instincts is to make it look appealing and attractive. But what people tend to forget is the content within the page, if it offers enough value and is aiming directly at your targeted audience people normally don't care what the website looks like.

They just want the content or the service, and if it's good enough they are more than happy to pay for it.

    Good luck

My choice is the first one. It looks more professional and looks like a place where I might get more information and learn something. Plus, it looks like a place where I would expect to receive support after the sale.

The second site just screams "sales page". It looks sales-y, and looks like the guy just wants me to buy an eBook. There is no reassuring feeling about the site. It gives the impression that, once I buy the eBook, the guy's going to be done with me, that there will be little, if any, after-sale support.

It depends on what your niche is, though. If it's something that involves learning or a product that will require after-sale support, I would go with the first option. It's not the graphics; it's the professionalism of the site. While it is trying to sell me something, it's upfront about it. It's saying we sell this while at the same time giving a good impression. With the second site, it's more like I'm going to tease you with some free lessons so you buy my eBook. It's undeceptively deceptive.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Depends on the audience. See who is leading your market/niche and look at their site.

If the first page of google (or however you determine your competition) is full of graphics, most likely that's the path. If they are nothing but text and clipart, there you go.

The flip side to that is that you may be able to set yourself apart from the crowd by going the opposite way - if "everyone" is doing heavy graphics, go the other way. It's a risk, but so is life, right?

May help to know the niche or market - you may get better feedback because the two examples you gave are from wildly different markets. If I'm looking for graphics, I expect to see graphics, ya know? If I'm looking for a tutorial, I don't care as much about the images.

I personally like the first one. They both look really good however.

  • Both look good (except the picture of the guy in the 2nd one is not too complimentary).

1st one looks like a professional ('respectable') site.
2nd one looks like just an average joe off the street talking to you.

Depends how you want to present yourself. Do you want an image of professionalism/corporate look? Or do you want to come across as a guy of the street trying to make a buck? Depends on what you want.
