Additional Nameservers - What For?

I've never thought about it but going through some renewals today gets me curious.

Eg. In namecheap its...

1. * (Required)
2. * (Required)
3.
4.
5.

You need a minimum 2 Nameservers but what are the additional nameserver space used for?

    Redundancy. In case one catches on fire, there's a backup. That's the only purpose.

    So do you place your other hosting nameservers in the other columns (if you have) or duplicate the 1st 2?

    Can't duplicate them (at least you shouldn't be able to). Don't worry about the remaining 3. 2 is all you need.
