Tell them that you are an online marketing consultant. Your clients include (whoever your affiliate for). Eventually somebody will ask if they can hire you for your services.

You can say that you help drive website traffic and visitors to websites, and in other words means that you are an online consultant

This is exactly what people ask/assume. Funny, I thought it was just me.

I just say that have a business online that puts buyers and sellers together and I get paid. They stare for a bit, then say, "That's it?"

I reply, "That's it, (pause) God Bless America!"

I like the "I run a few web sites" approach. I've found that saying "affiliate marketing" or "internet marketing" makes people assume they couldn't possibly understand it, or that it's sort of a "made up" job like "consulting" or something.

I love it when people ask me that question because I've got like 77 different answers such as:

    "I sell packets of data"

"Y'know that Internet thingee? Well, I use it to sell stuff" (Which usually leads to the question "what do you sell"? Have lots of fun with that one).

"I play video games and drink sugar free monster all day. No, really."

"I help men pick up women, I help people lose their muffin tops, I help them plan their weddings, I help people keep their dogs from pooping in the living room, I help high school and college students get financial aid for college.....I could go on, but it would sound like I'm bragging......."

"Let me put it to you this way, if you've filled out form to get something for free online or even clicked somewhere to go to another website, chances are I got paid."

    The look on people's faces......priceless!

"I help make dreams come true." <-- that one is a little too cheesy, even for me.

By the way, if you take more than one line to say what you are or what you do, you're doing it wrong

Tonio I'm glad you asked the question cause I've been trying to find an answer to that tricky question myself for a long time. I live in France, and seriously over here when it comes to making money online people are totally clueless...

If I say that I'm an internet marketer, immediately the question will be "who are you working for?"... And if you say that you work from home on your computer you lose your credibility completely. People then think you got money on the side and are trying to live off it or something like that.

You basically look like a tourist just fooling around, the simple thought of earning close to a decent salary working for yourself from the confort of your own living room seems totally unrealistic and impossible to believe for most people over here.

If they knew how much money I'm actually making (and it's definitely not a lot compared to some super affiliates here) their whole world and beliefs would be shattered into pieces, but I retain myself as much as I can, no need to make them feel bad about their jobs lol

The best way to handle that situation is to do a little bit of self-promoting. In many podcast video series, and so on you often hear "This has been sponsored in part by or, this has been brought to you by, and you can do is insert your own business name or product. The same thing can happen with your conversation. When they ask you who you work for name your own company.

I never say "internet marketer" or "I work online" or anything like that because they 9.9 times out of 10 then believe i'm doing networking marketing. I absolutely hate network marketing so them thinking that about what I do typically pisses me off. Just to be completely honest!

I usually say that I create DVD courses that teach people how to do something specific in a variety of different markets. The only reason they are really asking is because its a typical canned question and I don't think most people realllly care about the answer anyway.

Or sometimes I just say that I do a lot of stuff...whatever I can find that's fun and will support the traveling lifestyle I so much adore. "I do what I want."

    "I'm A Boss".

    Period. .

Normally they than ask, "Your a boss?"

"Well, not only do I FEEL like one, I actually AM one because,
run my own businesses -- online, and offline -- online as a
marketer, and offline (soon) as a Real Estate Investor".

Sometimes I get comments like, "Oooo, I want to be a boss,
    too!"

I very, VERY rarely get NEGATIVE reactions to what I do, no
matter how I say it. Because, I believe to strongly in what I
do, any attempt to make me look foolish for "sitting on my butt
making money", makes THEM look foolish for questioning it.

Any negative reactions you get, IMHO, is a reflection of how
you feel about what you do. Confidence in what you do, will
make people want to know more about what you do...even if
    it is a canned question.

I don't think that's right to be honest, I do really believe in what I do and people tell me they can see it in the way I talk about it. My own opinion is that people can get negative reactions when you tell them what you do just because of jealousy, regardless of how confident you are when you talk about it.

Most of them just don't want to go to work everyday and/or don't like what they do, and they don't want to believe that you can make more money than them just working on a computer by yourself in your living room because it sounds too good to be true. They adopt the "It just can't be" attitude to protect themselves from feeling bad about what THEY do. That's the feeling I get anyway.

"The internet pays for my lifestyle"

    Great answers!

I have actually had two offline clients materialize by just talking with them about their businesses! Now I'm helping them with their websites and online marketing!

I'm not the MOST experienced to do this but it's amazing how all this IM education builds up and next thing you know you're having a conversation with some offline friends and you know so much more than almost all of your offline friends and acquaintances.

It's great to add another revenue stream by helping them out and increasing their business!

    Cheers!

Exactly! Just too much of an open question. I think 60 minutes needs to do a few profiles on famous IMers to add a bit of knowledge to the masses as to what it is we do.

I think people just ask the wrong question. It should be, "What value do you give people in exchange for money?" instead of "What do you do for a living?"

Actually anything other than, "I build businesses" or "I'm an author" or "I help businesses sell their products to a wider audience" creates just too many questions phrased with, "You mean you...?" and too many judgmental looks.

    LOL,
My daughter was having an interveiw for a college scholarship the other day and they turned and asked me what I did for a living. That was fun. Because internet marketer just never cuts it. Then bring in my offline business of being a trade director in a fortune 500 barter company and the looks just get weirder... I've tried so many times to try and figure out the short sweet simple way to tell people what I do and often fail. Now I tend to stick with I own my own business, where I market and sell various products online.
