I'm Curious...What's The First Business-Related Thing You Do When You Start Your Day (Or Night)?

Warriors,

There is no right or wrong answer to this question, I am genuinely curious. Generally, what's the first business-related thing that you do when you start your day?

Granted, looking at myself, that I don't do the exact same thing when I first start my day, but generally the first thing that I do is review my action list from the previous business day so I know what needs to get done for that day. The second thing I normally do is check my voice mail, e-mails, etc.

A big thank you to everyone who has given their feedback so far. My motivation for asking this question is that I'm part of a time management study focus group and on one of their survey questions, they asked this question. And in reading that question I got curious as to what was the first business-related thing the Warriors did when they started their day (or night).

      Keep 'em coming.......

You can "unthank" me by going under my name, scrolling down a bit and click on the link that says "remove your thanks".

Nah, it's cool. It's a good thread, so you deserve a "thanks" for starting it.

For all of you who check email first thing, do you use a BlackBerry or some other smartphone? Or are you checking your email on a computer? Just curious.

I don't check e-mail first thing when I start my day, but when I get around to it it all depends on where I'm at. More often than not I check e-mail on my desktop at the home office. If I'm traveling I'll use my laptop or my iPhone.

My first thing each day is to check email for new orders and to make sure my team is not stuck with a project. The second business related thing I do is to switch on the coffee machine to indulge in my daily fuel ritual.

It depends on what's going on, but in general I check my email to see how rich I get to feel for the morning (check for order notifications :-), make sure there aren't any critical issues, make sure my sites are up, then go through the routine email.

Then I usually hit a couple news sites, visit the Obituary pages here and where I used to live, then start on my first project of the day. When I'm ready for my first break I check the Warrior Forum, then take the dog for a walk or go for a bike ride. Then a little more work and then I do something fun.

I take a lot of breaks - lol, it's great to be your own boss - but I also get a lot done.

I check my email..."New Order Notifications" make that process more enjoyable. Follow up on all support emails or questions...attack the mighty to do list and Get er done!

At the end of the week I have an income projection and plan on how I am going to achieve that goal for the upcoming week.

Of course also enjoy the perks of being my own work at home boss...if I want to go somewhere or do something I enjoy, I do it!

Check my email, then I visit my forums in descending order of expense - most expensive monthly fee comes first. This is primarily because the more expensive forums are less active, so once I'm finished with them, I can usually ignore them for the rest of the day.

First business activities of the morning are:

Check StatCounter for previous day's stats on all my sites.
Check WMT for new links/search queries
      Check Google Analytics
      Check Adsense
Make sure everything is running OK on my money sites and update any WP plugins that need updating
      Check email
      Drop by WF

Then get to work. I'll generally start off with writing an article.

I open the WF in one browser and my main email in another first thing with my morning coffee. That way I can deal with any customer PMs or emails first thing.

After I'm awake enough for the brain to be functioning, then I turn to my to do list and see what's up for the day and get to work.

The first thing I do, technically, is turn on my PC as I shut it down every
      night.

After that, I check my email.

After that, I attend to my membership site, which I update daily around 7:30
      each morning.

After that, it's whatever I feel like doing. Varies from day to day. Some
days I do nothing but rock out in the recording studio.

My day starts with getting 4/5 kids dressed, fed and ready for school. Waiting for the bus for 2 of them, getting the other 2 out the door.

Then Matty sits and plays beside me and I open my personal email account in one browser, my two business ones in the next two browsers, then I open my offline job in another browser. Go through all 3 email accounts and delete out the crap. Then starting with my offline job email account go through respond to customer emails and process any needed transactions, then go through my next business email account and do the same, and finally my personal one to get back to anyone who needs getting back to on that one.

Then I check daily postings in my forum.

And then I check to see my WSO's and PM's here.

    Then I get to work.

I review an old-fashioned planner (Franklin) to prioritize the tasks left-over from the day before...then decide what the one thing, if completed, would benefit me the most...and do that thing.

I go straight to email because if there's an emergency, that's where it is. I'm not going to go to a forum or my stats and discover that servers are down or customers are unhappy, and if either of those things is happening, that's the number one priority.

Not always. I frequently have issues that the server can't self-diagnose; for example, I've got (shudder) hosting customers... many years ago, I ran a web hosting service... and I've still got four people who keep paying their annual invoices. They could get better hosting for half the price elsewhere, but they don't care; I'm good enough.

One of my customers in particular thinks he's good at SQL. He's not. He often screws things up and gets the database server wedged for just his stuff. So while the database itself is just fine, none of HIS queries are resolving. Takes five seconds; I actually have a script that auto-logs as root and SIGHUPs the PostgreSQL process. He has his own script that auto-emails me every 30 minutes if his queries aren't resolving. So I look in my email, and if he's emailed me about the database, I just double-click the script and move on.

If the script didn't log in as root, I'd actually improve this even further, and forward those emails to a special account that would SIGHUP the server whenever it got email - but I never, ever, ever let anything log in as root without a human being involved.

Wow, that was a digression. Sorry.

Looks like I'm totally within the trend here.

I too start by checking my email, enjoying any Notification of Payment emails ;-) and
looking for anything any of my clients need.

After that it can vary widely -- work on client projects, or work on my own projects.

I also check up on EZA stats ;-) etc.

I need to create a more regular routine for going to the various forums. And as I am

schedule daily time for all theirs.

For the past 4-5 years I've been operating my online business on a part-time business. In that time I've earned next to nothing, why? Because I was unorganised. A few weeks ago I got myself a mentor, he didn't charge me an arm and a leg to get me thinking more logically about my online business.

You need organisation and time scales. I work in 1 hour blocks and I have a timer that tells me when that time is up so that I can re-ajust. Before I go to bed at night I make a note of all the tasks I wish to complete the next day and then place them in catagories of importance. When I get on my computer the next day I review those tasks and adjust as necessary. If you fail to plan to plan to fail, I think that makes sense.

    Rod,

Turn on the coffee pot (very business related) and commence drinking entire pot over next hour and a half as I check e-Mails for customer support, then check to do list, catch up with the 2 mastermind groups.

And dodge Kevin Riley and the hamsters.

First thing I do is check with my general manager and ask if we have any problems need solving.

Next thing I do is check with my editor and ask if we had any problems with yesterdays content.

I then deliver any completed projects.

After this I check our scheduling calender and decide whether or not I need to queue up some more work for the team.

Once all this is done, if I have a personal writing project I am working on, then I make a start on that. Otherwise I go out for breakfast, then ride up to the local temple for a sauna and a massage, then come home and chill out sitting in my hammock.

I meet with my small staff - have coffee and discuss the agenda for the day. Everyone usually brings their daily goals with them to the morning staff meeting. We meet for about 30 minutes to see if everyone is on the righ track - then off we go.

    Happy Trails....

First thing that I do is to check on my email in the morning. After that, I'm going to look through my calendar and check for deadlines. Thirdly, I get to check and update my virtual team about the progress of the projects, some things that need to get fixed, etc. Then proceed doing my hobbies.

That's how easy it is after spending couple of time with outsourcing, You spend time finding people to work on your behalf, train them and get them to have a feel on your business systems but after that, all goes smoothly as possible as they work by themselves with responsibility.

I'm glad you asked, thank you too!

First thing I do is check my client emails, stats and niche website rankings.

I make sure everything is running smoothly. Then I create a plan for what needs to be achieved that day. Then as the day progresses I manually tick tasks off.

It's basic. But it works for me.

After I finish those tasks, I check my email. If I check my email first, then I am not under my own control. You understand what I mean?

Well I don't check my emails until later in the day. Have coffee visit the WF. Normally, before I go to bed start reading something. So, try to finish in the morning over coffee.

Right now I'm taking some courses from Oxford University College of Marketing. That will give me some ideas for a couple of Articles. Later in the day write Articles and check email.

Start working about 12:00 am. But, work until about 8.00.

Check email. Which is funny to me, because I read so many business building books (4 Hour Workweek, anyone?) that recommend not checking email right away, but then I come here and see that that's what just about everyone does.

Personally, I like to respond right away to my customers. Too much of a background in customer service to let something like that slide, I suppose

Check my e-mail while sipping on my first coffee. Since I live on the other side of the globe, I get any questions or other support requests that were sent during your side of the world's day. My business is built around good customer support, so I want to get that taken care of ASAP. Then, I have the rest of the day to work on projects.

BTW, when I was in Atlanta, it really threw me off. Since I was on your side of the globe, there were few e-mails in the morning. I had to change my routine to an evening e-mail check.
