Membership site - help needed.

Hi there fellow Warriors!

Need some help please... From your experience, is it better to convert a current Wordpress blog site to a membership site or build a brand new one?

The other point is, should the membership site be on a money site (sale) or Wordpress site?

Real dilemma, so any help appreciated...

regards

Joe

You can do it either way. I dont think it makes much of a difference.

Personally i would start from the floor up.

I always use wordpress for my membership sites.

    Its free.

Do you use any particular plug-in? Also what payment processing system are you working with?

      Thanks,

The last post i answered, i said i use member wing which is a free plugin.

Well i have some good news.

I just came across a cool membership plugin from a good friend of mine. This allows up to 5 different membership levels and has some great features.

        Very easy to manage.

He agreed to giving me PLR rights to it and agreed i could give this away for free.

Let me know if interested and i will send you a pm with the link to grab it.

This is a paid product so getting this plugin free should be great.

        Thanks Craig

If you have multiple membership levels some free and some paid then it would be good to have the membership on wordpress.

Using Wordpress to start a membership site is as easy as installing Wordpress via CPanel and then use Instant Membership Site Creator to set up protection for the blog.

The membership script will not have a thousand bells and whistles, but you can always find those for WP and get all fancy in that manner.

Yes, I have done this. Easy peasy... and it works.

I have used amazing technic to creating a membership website. I have used Wordpress for password protected material and used simple HTM page for sales page! And both are working great. You can check it at my signature. Though you will not able to memership area. Soory for that, but this idea can be used.

    I'm building a WordPress Membership

Depending on your hosting company, I'm using HostGator, and in cPanel I setup WordPress on the main domain.

Then created a subdomain (member.yourwebsite.com) and installed Worpress to that subdomain which is where I installed the membership script using the same theme for both to make everything match looking like one website.

The best option is to build a brand new membership site using wordpress. Wordpress has some very wonderful features and your membeship site will work well with it.

I can't remember the particular posts now but there are a few posts in the war room that provides quality information on what you really need to run a membership site using wordpress.

Visit the war room and search through since you are a member already.

Funny, my last post before this was also telling someone about the sheer goodness of the war room. I just can't help it, the war room rocks!

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Jude.

    1. Download latest MemberWing-X plugin
    2. Upload/activate
    3. In any article and page that you want to make "premium" insert this marker: { { {4.95 } between free teaser and premium part of it. This will automatically create paypal button and force people to pay $4.95 to you to read the rest of your article.
You don't need to configure anything at all - it's all automatic.
.....You may stop reading here. But if you want a bit more flexibility - keep reading.....
    4. If you want to sell articles/pages for a fixed fee *or* by subscription:
      - insert this marker: { { {4.95|gold }
      - create "subscribe" page
      - in your paypal account create "subscription" button for product named "Gold Membership" and paste the code for this button inside your 'subscribe' page.
    5. If you want to have multiple levels of subscriptions - create multiple 'subscription' buttons within Paypal, set different pricing for each as you wish and paste the codes for these button in your 'subscribe' page.
      The use markers like these:
      { { {9.95|platinum } or { { {4.95|platinum|gold } etc...
    6. If you want to allow access to some premium pages for free members (for the sake of building mailing list) use this marker:
      { { {* }
Person just need to subscribe to your blog for free to read the rest of such article.
    7. You may also integrate MemberWing-X with Aweber or Mailchimp autoresponders, build mailing list and deliver newsletters.
    8. MWX also includes gradual content delivery (dripping content) and integrated affiliate network but I won't get into this stuff here to save space.

I currently use amember pro for my membership sites. The script is very stable and easy to use. You just specify a file or directory that should be protected and you can hide all your products, web pages and content in there.

Another free option is Mike Filsaime's butterly marketing script which I believe he just made open source not so long ago. Very good for setting up one-time offers, building a list, and getting people to promote your site. That's entirely what the script was designed for.

It really depends on the sort of membership you intend to run.

I think starting a new website would motivate the real loyal followers to join up, while allowing the ones with only small relative interest to keep up with your blog, and allow them to build more interest over time. That way they don't feel forced to opt-in on your membership site. I'd also go with a paid website for your membership site, simply because it's really not that much money (at the cheap end, it's only about the price of a lunch), and so that you can gaurantee full control over the site itself.

I've never used wordpress for a membership site. But I can see it working.

It depends on what you want to accomplish with the site? Are you looking to have the members interact? If so, wordpress would not be my first choice.

However if you are planning on giving them access to content without any real interaction, then it would work well for that.

There's so many ways to do them and they're becoming more and more popular as the web moves to paid content more and more to get away from sifting through tons of junk to find what you want.

Are you kidding? You can do all of that and more with a WP site that's set up properly!

I run a wpmu membership site. And am also about to launch 2 more membership sites with WPMU with BuddyPress & BBPress too.

The membership plugin I use is s2member - also free and incredibly flexible.

Members will be able to interact with each other in groups, contacts, access forums, have their own blog etc etc. It can be twitter or facebook style. It will all be managed with s2member, with 4 different payment levels - including a free basic level to wet their appetite. Plus of course, as it's wp or wpmu - it's FREE!! And the plugins for wpmu, buddypress & bbpress are growing by the day.

If you think WP cant handle membership sites - you really need to take a serious look at what can be done now.

If you're looking for something more fully featured than the free wordpress membership plugins, you should check out Your Members . It's one of the oldest (but still actively developed) WP Membership Plugins and whilst not free, it's pretty competitively priced compared to the competition. It's also ideal for building a membership sites around.

Disclaimer - I work for them, but don't hold that against them, but it's still a great product.

Wish List is a great membership plugin.

Have you tried the s2 membership plugin.

It is a pretty descent plugin. Its also free

Heres a little about the plugin. I use this plugin on several sites and works similar to amember

But i would still say wish list is definitely one of the better ones out there if you have the money for it.

Heres a little more on the s2 plugin:

s2Member is a robust/powerful ( and free ) membership management system for WordPress®. s2Member integrates seamlessly with PayPal® ( very easy ), and fully supports recurring billing, with the ability to track affiliate commissions on a recurring basis. s2Member supports custom Pages for registration ( including Custom Registration Fields ), account access, and a whole lot more.

s2Member supports up to four primary Membership Levels, and unlimited Custom Capability Packages. This allows you to create an unlimited number of Membership Packages, all with different Capabilities and prices. You can label your primary Membership Levels anything you like. The defaults are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

s2Member allows you to protect Pages, Posts, Tags, Categories, URIs, URI word fragments, URI replacement codes for BuddyPress, Specific Post/Page "Buy Now" Access, and even portions of content within Posts/Pages/themes/plugins. Everything is configurable through the s2Member Options Panel. This makes s2Member VERY easy to integrate into any WordPress®-powered site. With s2Member, you can also protect downloadable files, using special restrictions on how many downloads can occur within a certain amount of time; all based on Membership Level.

Each Membership Level can have different restrictions, and you could even integrate Conditionals within your content based on Member Level. Advanced code samples are provided under s2Member -> API Scripting -> Advanced Conditionals. s2Member has been fully integrated with the Roles & Capabilities that are already built into WordPress®. No new tables :-) It is designed to be completely seamless, without code bloat. We've carefully structured the entire framework, in order to maximize s2Member's ability to operate with other plugins installed. For instance, s2Member is compatible with BuddyPress!

You can get the plugin below

      S2MemberPlugin

      Hope this helps

It can be done both ways of course, but if your site doesn't have a ton of content on it, it wouldn't be too hard at all to adapt the Wordpress blog with a membership site plugin.

While I haven't set a membership site up myself, I have heard good things about wishlist and amember pro (though amember pro's a little pricey).

    Hey...

I had a wordpress blog that was the basis of my brand....I wanted a membership site and kicked around the idea of having a paid and unpaid portion to the site....I could have done that...but I found it easier to create a new site and keep the free and paid portions on different domains...

It was easier...I would have liked to do them both in one domain though...but it seemed like a headache when i looked into it...

Hey Sherman long time brother. Good to see you again and been awhile since we were both using the Russ and Jimmie D models.

Yea I was trying to stay away from creating another blog for the membership site but it seems like a better idea to keep it seperate from my content site.

I am only going to have 1 or 2 membership levels and would like to integrate a forum into it. So I am going to have to research that one a little too or start a new thread for opinions.
