Gosh I can't believe marketer's (who should know better) are still using the above subject line in their email marketing.

As annoying as it is marketers get many newbies on their lists and it must work for them.

Their testing must prove that it's their most effective subject line. Surely they test

they wouldn't be using it if it didn't work... they probably get brand new marketers on their list all of the time who have never seen that subject line so as long as it's getting click through's and sales you'll continue to see the old gogo subject line...

Sheeshh... I was expecting your affiliate link Kim... nothing to click! ;-)

Not a big fan of that one either, but as the others suggest, perhaps it's working for them- like you, it wouldn't work on me, but they must be seeing some result.

I also clicked on this thread because I saw it was Kim who was posting.

So I guess for me if the sender is someone I trust I would open the email.

          If not - DELETE!

I think it's important we keep these subject lines in context with who the sender is.

If it's Warren Buffett - "News About Your Money" - I'll open it.

If it's Bernie Madoff - "News About Your Money" - I'm calling my lawyer.

    All this talk of

"It must work because they're using it"... "tests must have shown that it works" etc..

    Makes me laugh.

The truth is probably the complete opposite... most marketers who use these bland, boring and over-used subject lines (bad news... anyone?).. are pretty much using them because they saw somebody else use them and they can't be bothered to turn on a few brain cells before they mail to get a little creative.

As subject lines go, this one is tired, lazy, lacking in originality, and only shows me that whoever is using it... clearly saw someone else use it when they were a n00b and thought it was soooo cool.

Jay, I agree with you 100%.

My subject lines are straight to the point.

Those who respond to hype won't pay attention to them, and that's fine
because I don't want those people for customers.

The ones who do respond to them are down to earth and practical people
who have some kind of a head on their shoulders and don't follow the herd
      like sheep.

Those are the people I want for customers.

No, I don't because my products don't fit the mold. They require work and I
          make this clear up front.

People who buy into hype, IF they bought stuff of mine, would only end up
          refunding anyway.

So no, I don't want those people as customers.

I know, right?!? Its hard to tell what is being used just cause its easy and what is actually working so its being used. And it really doesn't matter until I test it in my market anyway to see if it will work for me. But gosh I hate to see the SAME boring email subject lines day after day.

One I really didn't like this week: "Re: Your support request" something like that. Then it had NOTHING to do with that topic at all...just an evil ploy to get me to open

Yeah but Jay, it also depends heavily on who is using it and in what context. I saw that Kim made the OP and I know she puts out good work and is someone who wouldn't stoop to cheesy subject lines (oops Kim), so that got me to click. If it was someone I didn't respect or know, I probably would have skipped right by it. Another example, if someone whose list I'm on that I respect sent out a few messages about an upcoming launch about something I'm interested in, and then I saw "It's Live...Go...Go...Go" - I'd go without a second of hesitation! Just saying that it's not always a lame subject line, context and the rep of the sender matter a lot!

        You know...

After reading Kim's posts here at the forum before.. I knew 100% that she was having a moan here, before I opened the thread.

Not because I think she moans..lolz.. But because in this forum context, she had put that subject line as the thread title, it was clear to me what she was about to say.

Most seasoned interwebz folks, have been seeing these same trends come and go for years now. They get even more tired and boring every time they come around.

It's like in football. If running the ball right down the middle works, why stop doing it? Maybe some are lazy and don't test, but just maybe yeah, they ARE getting results with the most common lines. Why reinvent the wheel? We marketers tire of our stuff of lot more faster than the market so we must resist the urge for unneeded change.

Not true. You, and perhaps a few newbies to WF, opened it because the headline "worked," but the rest of us immediately recognized that:

      1. The post is in the main Internet Marketing Discussion forum, not the WSO forum. So we know it's not an ad. Or, if it is, it will shortly be removed by a mod.

      2. It's from Kim Standerline, and most of us who read this forum know she's not into that kind of nonsense.

So, for me, the subject line "worked" in this case because I knew Kim must have something interesting to say. Probably a fun rant. And I like reading fun rants. But I did NOT open it because it worked as a sales pitch.

      Be careful with assumptions.

[edit: oops, I hadn't seen Bill's post when I wrote this. I guess I pretty much rehashed what he said, only with more words. ]

How about the insulting subject lines like:

FAIL (then the message tells me "If you are not using this free training, I can almost guarantee that you will fail at getting your first sale online).

To me, these are even worse than the over-the-top hypey ones. If the product appears to be worthy, I might overlook a hype-filled subject line and/or sales pitch. But insult my intelligence and you've lost me for good.

If I (subscriber) would be subscribed to my beloved email marketer's

          Bingo.

I would have opened this thread no matter what the subject was, just because it had Kim's name attached to it. And because it was Kim's thread, I wanted to see what rant she might have about the "go, go, go" subject line.

So... no, the subject line didn't "work" on me. (And if she did send me a "go, go, go" email, I'd probably give her a little slap up alongside her head... lol.)

I would guess they're hoping those people are excited and anxious about their product arrival, so why not get straight to the point in the subject line? GO GO GO...

I would say it works. Think about it, I don't wanna buy whatever the crap that is but there might by a 100 people on his list that have been following the prelaunch and are sitting there with credit cards in their hands.

When a 100 of those get the email, they rush to the site and buy it. Let's assume that the guru makes $50 a sale,

    100 sales x $50 = $5000

What about the 90000 people on their list who don't give a s*** about that product? Well good for them

I'd open this email. That's where the unsubscribe link is.

My favorite lines are ones that use "FR.EE" or something like that. It always makes me laugh.

I too find them very annoying.

Part of it makes me feel like may I'm a chump though, and missing out because I can't
bring myself to use subject lines like that.

Also, if they are primarily working on newbies, that mightwell work for those marketers
who use those lines because newbies are the easiest to sell to, or so I've heard...

There are another couple of top of the annoying-meter subject line:

      UP?

      "You UP?"

And when I do open the email, just to see what that person is trying to do this time
(I'm always interested in learning new tricks"

      There's nothing but

      CLICK IT! and the link.

Does that work? And for whom?

I do sometimes click to find out what it's selling, but if it's a product I want, I make
a point of buying it through someone else's link if possible, just because the email
      ticks me off so much.

      What do you all think?

P.S.: There's another one... People addressing me as:

      DUUUUUDE!

      Uhmmmm...

If it was something where I was very very interested in the product, it might be a welcoming email -- if I was interested in getting the Fast Action Bonuses.

(been there, done that. Missed out on getting all of Mike Filsaime's products from now until whenever for free when he launched Butterfly Marketing the first time, though. Now THAT was a fast action bonus worth trying for -- and I tried (first 5, I was in the first 20 I think it was.)

So -- yes -- while sitting in a haze of todo lists, battered by uncooperative computers, meeting bodiy desires (which seem to be mainly ins & outs), being reminded that the product I wanted was live would be helpful. I guess.

OTOH -- if I were THAT desperate (I think Butterfly Marketing was the last time...oh wait -- I think some of Robert Plank's dimesales...)...I would have stripped down everything on my computer to a minimum,, my browser to a minimum -- performance-analyzed everything -- and been hitting the sales site waiting for the sales page to go live.

BTW -- Kay, can I swipe your subject lines and run a WSO ?

Those who respond to hype won't pay attention to them, and that's fine
because I don't want those people for customers.

The ones who do respond to them are down to earth and practical people
who have some kind of a head on their shoulders and don't follow the herd
    like sheep.

Those are the people I want for customers.

My absolute favorite "go,go" email was several years ago - I had it saved on my old computer but it's gone now.

There was a launch (I didn't buy it) - then the emails about how fast it "sold out"....then an email saying "we miscounted - and still have 20 copies available". It went on to say the 20 copies had been "set aside" but were supposed to be included in the launch...so 20 lucky people could still get in.

20 copies set aside???? It was a digital download, dumbo. I realized somewhere in the world 20 members of the herd were pulling out their credit cards.....and thinking how lucky they were to get a "found" copy.

A similar (though not so blatantly obvious) email has been sent after a few of the big launches. Usually it's a week or two after the launch and magically there are a few additional spaces available. Call me skeptical but I always figured those are to replace the sales already refunded....

      Marketing genius? Probably.

When you do a product launch the correct way, their are hundreds and even thousand of people waiting for your product to go live.

I don't use the it's live go go go, but I do let them know when the product is live...

If I didn't how would anyone know to buy it. It's simply just a call to action.. I wouldnt expect anyone here to do a product launch and not let the list know when it's live
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2088263].message }}

Well yes of course we let folks know when something has gone live. I'm not disputing that.

It's the utterly cheesy subject line I'm talking about, its so completely mis/over used by folks who couldn't think up something a bit more original if their lives depended on it.

It was from an affiliate, (A very well known one so I'm surprised). It will have been part of a series of prewritten emails from the vendor, how hard would it be for this person to think up his own subject line and stand out, rather than follow the herd of other affiliates blindly shooting the same email off to everyone.

I didn't open the email so I have no idea who the vendor is or what the product is all about so it was totally wasted on me.

Only reason I didn't unsub was this person does normally send out decent emails and has some quality products.

thats just the last email in a series designed to pre sell the product...

That headline is aimed at those on your list who you have successfully already pre sold, if you aren't presold already then that email wont work on you.

thats fine, thats how its supposed to be.

Its launch time, no time left to do any any more pre selling. the emails that went before have either done there job or not. Thats why that headline works, it works on those you already convinced to buy, and now your simply calling them to take action.

Its not lame, when you take it in context. Its a logical CTA email headline.

A lot of times the effectiveness of the subject line depends on WHO sent the email. I always look to see who the email is from!

Having said that, Kim could send me an email with the subject line "Poopie Doopie Doggie Doo" and I would open it because SHE'S THE MAN... well, she' not really a man actually... SHE'S THE WOMAN!!!
