Is it my imagination, or did GoArticles just delete every single article under 300 words?

Hmm. I rarely write anything that short, but I'm sure I had a few articles just shy of 300 words.

I've just checked my GoArticles, and I have none listed that are under 300, so you just might be right.

    Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, you are right. I just checked my account on Goarticles. The articles which are under 300 words are all deleted. Unfortunetly, most articles I submitted to Goarticles were under 300 words. Now there is only a few articles left. Fortunately, I have backed up all these articles. I will not trust any article directory anymore.

Wow. I better head and check my account. Did anyone receive any sort of communcation from them about why they are doing this? If not, can't believe they would do this without notifying their writers.

I usually write far more than 300 words but that is pretty poor not to be notified so you could correct and bring your articles up to their terms. Was this in their terms of Service?

Wow... that's a little ridiculous that there wasn't an announcement.

I probably lost at least 50 some articles. It would have been nice to know so that one could edit them if need be to meet a certain word count on the articles that were bringing traffic.

Mine are all way over 300 words so I should be okay.

Copied directly from GoArticles Authors Guidelines:

"Submissions that are less than 300 words will be removed from the GoArticles database. Longer articles may also be removed if they contain no useful content or are submitted for the sole purpose of obtaining backlinks or promoting a product or service."

From the google cache of that page:

"Submissions that are less than 200 words will be removed from the GoArticles database. Longer articles may also be removed if they contain no useful content or are submitted for the sole purpose of obtainingbacklinks or promoting a product or service."

They changed their Authors Guidelines, too. It's not like they were getting rid of articles that had violated their author's guidelines. They changed the guidelines without any warning, then deleted the articles.

hypocrites why on earth people would submit articles to their directory if not for promoting a product or service (a website is the same thing). personally im not gonna spend my time to make them adsense revenue or whatever.

also, lame move on changing the tos without noticing anyone and deleting after. even i dont do this on my user content generated websites :p

If they aren't going to allow that anymore, then article marketing is basically dead.

I belive the time has come for all BUM Marketers to set up their own comtent sites and publish their own unique content to them and then buy some advertising instead of trying these free article marketing methods. In the past, they may have worked, but as the internet evolves, us marketers will have to evolve with it.

Besides, when you have your own content site, you can put as many affiliate links in your content as what, you can publish pretty much whatever you want, and you can profit from contextual and other advertising programs as well. It's a win-win situation for the site owner. You can even charge a fee to publish articles from other marketers on your site if you want to.
The Bum method is great when starting out, but I couldn't agree with you more - Publishing your own content on your own site and putting in the work to get traffic to your site is the best way to go about it. Other than a possible server crash that could eliminate everything (as long as you have your work backed up though, then this is nothing more than a small blip before you'll be back up and running), you'll never have to worry about content getting deleted or your site disappearing one day.

Look at it like an investment, because that's what it is, really. However, the investment is less risky than putting all of your hard work on OTHER sites. I don't disapprove using article directories and other free methods of traffic, because I do it myself, but what I don't suggest is running your entire online business on free methods alone. And I say that for reasons like what GoArticles just did. In other words, you're at the liberty of the other sites.

So yeah - Use the free traffic methods, but don't put all of your eggs in one basket. Diversify where you're getting traffic from.

But the whole reason of article marketing is NOT for backlinks and promotion. That's the problem - most everyone thinks it is.

Yes, backlinks and promotion are an important part of it, but they are certainly not everything.

All GA did is increase their minimum word count, which was long overdue IMO. I think their reasoning is more along the lines of assuring your articles maintain their longevity - not to piss everybody off and make them go elsewhere.

There is a reason why article platforms are doing what they're doing. Unfortunately, most people fail to realize why. Just think about it for a while. They are protecting their property, they're not just being mean and stupid.

If you are submitting 200 word articles, then yes - you are out for backlinks and the article directories don't want you. But if you are using articles how they were originally meant to be used, then you have nothing to worry (or complain) about.

                Allen

Edit: This is not directed at any one person - it is meant for everyone who can fit in the shoe.

I'll bet if you look real close at the terms of service, they told you all the way from day one that they might do this.

And I'll bet if you had asked them the day you joined about this, they would have said "Oh, don't worry - that's just to make the lawyers happy; we would never do something like that and NOT TELL YOU."

Nothing is "just to make the lawyers happy." It's there to remove and restrict your rights. The lawyers are happy because it secures rights that are valuable, and takes other valuable rights away from you.

Never believe someone who asks you for the right to do something, but claims they will never do it. If you really will never do it, you don't need the right to do it.

And read the damn terms of service, every single time you get them. Especially if you have to check a box that says you read them.

I noticed that a short while back, but since I normally have over 500 words and almost always 450 minimum, actually kind of rejoiced when I saw that.

Maybe not every article under 300 words has little or no value, but MANY I have seen over the last year that are that short really offer very little but a "click here for more".

Wow - that's crazy that they wouldn't tell us first.

I agree with the move, I just think they should have told everyone they were going to do it so that if anyone was 2 words shy, they could have gone in and edited them to avoid losing the backlinks.

Oh well - not a problem if you were actually performing article marketing the "right way" and writing articles over 300 words, right?

Why would you even use the word "article" for a 300 word piece of text? If GA is serious about business, I would actually like to see them implement more measures to raise the quality. There is so much junk on their site now because they even approved thousands of spun articles that did not make any sense to the reader ...

For what it is worth, Goarticles.com actually sent out an email on 28 April that announced they were deleting all articles under 300 words long.

The email was their April member update and in the Recent/Planned Goarticles.com Site Changes it had the following:

"General Information - All Authors should take note of the following:

All articles under 300 words will be removed to reduce article spam and to improve the quality of the GoArticles article index.

The Author Showcase on the GoArticles homepage will become the Expert Author's Showcase.

The number of articles indexed by Google has more than doubled, but could be better. We're working on it."

I only point that out because if you rely on various article directories you always want to make sure you read the information they send you.

I always read EZA's blog and the emails from Articlesbase.com, Goarticles.com...etc

Could they have done a better job of announcing it...sure, but they did put the info out there.

    Respectfully,
    Tim
