Is twitter really used to make money online?

I recently signed up for Twitter after hearing about how people are using it to make money. I never bought a how to guide on how to do it properly. I got about 300 followers on one account and slowly promote my stuff and another account I had only for a couple days and they deactivated my account. Is there a proper way to use Twitter when reaching out to promote products to others or is Twitter really not a good option for Internet Marketing?

What are your thoughts and have you ever made money on twitter?

Please give me any tips?

Thank You.

I've not made sales yet (I'm pretty new to Twitter too) but I know I'm getting clicks and hops ... now it's just a case of working out how many clicks and hops I need per sale and how the topics I tweet about (and the information I use) 'convert'.

So far ... it's been ok for 10 minutes work per day just to get followers and see where it takes me.

Well not sure if its the proper way to do it but for my first twitter account I just spent a couple hours adding people. For my second Twitter account I found a program called hummingbird that adds by keywords. So far twitter hasnt really seemed like a very good marketing avenue for me but I think its great for staying connected.

i personally haven't been very serious about twitter. i tweet my business website only a few times a day but not extensively. the whole thing is so full of marketing stuff and it has gotten very impersonal. anyways, i think the key to getting twitter to work for you and not against you is to treat it sort of like a mini mailing list. your followers are your opt-in subscribers and your tweets are the emails you send them. this means your tweets have to be informative and interesting, and not always trying to promote something. i suggest using a good twitter tool like TweetAdder to search for twits who use your relevant keywords such as "paid surveys" or "affiliate marketing" or whatever your topic is. the tool will then automatically follow those people for you, and 90% of the time they will follow you back. afterwards, you tweet about the subject. the whole point of tweeting for marketing purposes is to get targeted followers, who will be more likely to show interest and buy your offers.

my site has gotten clicks but i don't know if i've ever made money from twitter as i don't go that deep into tracking and analytics. if you plan on banking on twitter as a major source of traffic, you'll have to get a software tool as doing it manually will be exhausting.

Twitter is an excellent way to get web traffic, earn money and find joint ventures. Once I hit 20,000 Twitter Followers (about a year ago) things just got crazy. I have some free training on my YouTube channel or how to grow followers and how to properly use Twitter.
It really depends on what your product it as well. Remember, people aren't on Facebook or Twitter to go shopping.

I use Twitter to promote articles and direct followers to my pages which in turn have associated product offerings. Make money of twitter? Not directly, but indirectly.

I have a bunch of followers under my pseudo name for my sex toy business. Every once in a while I advertise a new product and that product earns more interest, but I don't use it to really advertise anything but who I am and what I'm doing (as my pseudo name). I answer lots of tweets from normal people who just ask me questions, some are businesses, but generally I don't use Social Media to advertise products, just myself.

We don't actually use twitter but...

The ones that build a massive following on auto that send the auto messages when you follow to try and get you to buy their product...yeah they are doing it wrong.

Not exactly sure who taught them that was the right way to do things but it sure isn't...

Post some descent tweets for people following you...throw in some free info they have to opt in for now and then...build a list then give some descent content to that list...eventually try and convert some into buyers...the buyers you funnel into a new list...

Totally different animal as far as list building goes then for instance someone who already is looking for something and is buying from you.

I've got around 3,700 followers on Twitter. I'll give Twitter this, it can be a great source of traffic. The drawback may be the quality of the traffic, because while Twitter has ranked right up there with the G for me for traffic generation, the traffic it has brought has had the lowest conversion rate of any other source... but perhaps that is in my own presentation...

I use it more of a way to update people about what I'm doing, post inspirational quotes, get the word out on my blog posts etc... I would love to think of twitter as more of a branding tool (which you can't really track your ROI's very clearly) than anything else.

Yes, you can make good money in twitter directly. Most people will say that they are not because obviously they are doing something wrong. As long as you can get traffic, theres no reason that you cannot make money from it.

Twitter is nearly useless for marketing IMHO. Most of my 2000 followers on one account are nothing but a bunch of Twitter spammers. Never had an account where that wasn't the case. So if you want to try to market to a bunch of Twitter spammers, with micro-messages that scroll by at the speed of light, go ahead, but I wouldn't spend any money on HOW TO GET RICH WITH TWITTER ebooks, as the only way to make any real money with Twitter is to sell HOW TO GET RICH WITH TWITTER ebooks.

    1. It's not about followers. If you have 1 person following you who others listen to you are doing well.

    2. It's not about selling or making money. Twitter is a SOCIAL network. Have you ever asked how you can make money going to parties?

You make friends first, business comes from those relationships.

I have gotten sales, speaking gigs and some good consulting deals over twitter but not by inflating my follower account and spamming links

This is exactly the right way to use Twitter. I didn't bother to type this out because normally in these "can I make money with Twitter" threads, there are those that are pushing their "how to make money with Twitter" ebooks and the rest of the people don't have a clue how to use a social network and if they can't make money by getting tons of followers and spamming their links, they aren't interested.

Be social ... build relationships? Naaaw ... that takes too much effort.

Jesseray; you said you were using a program called hummingbird. I found a similar program to add twitter followers by keywords.

I had a small following of around 20 followers and I used the program not really knowing what I was doing or whether it worked. I did find afer a couple of short spells that my twitter following had grew to 120. Of course I now expect a lot of those to drop off by not reciprocating.

I did read a warning with the program not to run it for too long. Maybe something like 45 minutes at any one time. I think if you were running your program for too long that is why your account was shut down.

If I use the program again to boost my twitter following I shall use it for short periods with a good interval in between and set it up such that it does not add followers at to fast a rate.

      Hi,

I've been tinkering a little bit with Twitter, but haven't had much success.

Most new posts get 5 or 10 clicks max before disappearing into the ether.

Having said that, two things work pretty well...

Firstly, I've set up an 'autoresponse' for every new follower. The response sends them to the download page for a $17 product of mine. This gets between 2 and 10 clicks per day. As I'm only using bit.ly to track the clicks, it's hard to say how good -- if any -- that traffic is. But, I figure it's got to be SOME good... at least occasionally. A new subscriber here, a new affiliate sale there...

The other positive I've had is that one of my profiles on Twitter has a PR5. I have no idea how this happened. I haven't been promoting it or linking into it (except from the website it's designed to promote). I notice that it's been added to 30 Twitter lists so maybe it's down to that? Anyway, it's a PR5 link to my website which is nice.

      One last thing...

I'm one of the people who doesn't 'get' Twitter and I'm certain I never will. For that reason, I recommend using a site like hootsuite.com to manager your Twitter account(s). It's gives you a nice overview of what's happening and makes it easier to spot direct messages to you, re-tweets and so on.

    Me too...

In fact if you take a step back and look for what's happening in the online marketing world you can clearly see a shift from the old-school traditional marketing involving hard pitched selling to a modern marketing that's rather based on relationship and customer care than on aggressive selling.
Take a look at Zapos. From the time they implemented Twitter into their marketing strategy the company almost tripled in 2 years.

    Cheers, Remi

Twitter will not make you much money. It's actually how Twitter connects you to these people whom will help you earn big bucks once you develop relationships with them, turn them as your subscribers and then they start promoting your products or buying your affiliate programs. And now, that's much.

Twitter is all about connecting with people in my experience. I have many accounts in different niches and use it to form relationships with like minded people. I then tweet links to my squeeze pages to get them to opt-in to my lists and then use aweber to do my email marketing to these people.

As with any marketing it is all about adding value rather than trying to make a quick buck and if you form good relationships you will find you get back more than you give in the long run.

I suppose its the difference between a one night stand and a steady girl/boy friend

That's nice to hear that you were able to build 9,000 followers on auto-pilot. Can you tell me what kind of software did you use?

Anyway, as far as making money using twitter, yes you can make money but it depends on how you use it. Your twitter followers is like your subscribers in your list. If you have a blog, for every post you come up, you tweet your followers and let them know that you have a new post, same thing in your email marketing, you don't always sell, but you also have to build good relationship with them too.

Once you have more than a thousands of followers and were able to build good relationship with them, you can recommend a product and earn commissions as an affiliate, or if you have a brand new product, you can also tell them about it. But you must be sincere on your subscribers and followers, make sure that it will be helpful for them, so it's also important to build targeted subscribers and followers in your niche "ONLY".

One good tip to increase your followers quickly is to do "guest blogging". Look for a high-ranked blog in your niche, some blogs even have a script that shows the number of readers and followers they have on their blog. For example, I know one blog that has 56k followers. Contact the owner and ask permission to do a guest post. make sure to provide a very informational and helpful post that will benefit their readers. On the author-bio section of your post, you can put like, "Follow me on twitter to learn more tips". Once your post went live, the blog owner will tweet his followers, and you can steal some of their followers. The blog owner will also send a broadcast to his email subscribers that a new post just went live, so it's a different set of potential followers again if they click on your twitter link.

I LOVE Twitter! It's really taken my business to the next level. Over the last year the most exciting projects I've been a part of have come about because of Twitter. Can Twitter make you money? That's like asking if email, your computer, or the internet can make you money. It's all in how you approach and use the tool that determines your success. Just like how some people have an email list with 5,000+ people on it and are struggling to make any money off of it each month and others have a list of 2,000 that makes them full time income, your Twitter success is going to depend greatly on how you use it. The quality of your followers, your tweets, and your interaction is going to determine whether or not you see success.

If all you're doing is tweeting out your affiliate link, then no, you are not going to make a decent amount of money with Twitter. Why should you? If it was that easy everyone would be doing it.

    Hey Jesse,

In Twitter, it is very important to build not just relationships but friendships with your followers. This way, they will click through your link whenever you make a broadcast. Also, I would avoid people who are just there for self promotion. Twitter is a tool and if you will use it to personally reach out to people, then it will convert.

Mary_K is right in saying that a Twitter follower base can act as a mailing list. You have to constantly build rapport with your followers if you would like them to buy from you. While it may take time, building real friendships with your followers will result to a powerful 'fan base'. These people will not just be anonymous people that you tweet to but people who will follow your every move.

But yes, it will still take time (even months of twitter addiction) to do that.
