how much would you charge to run a website?

Here is the scoop and i need you all's help. How much would you charge to run a website. (monthly charge)

and how much would you charge to set one up? (one time payment)

You see, i run my church's website and they pay me $200 dollars a month. Now, you might be thinking like that is a lot, but there is so much more that goes into that because i'm in charge of other things that have to do with media and I also have to be there every single sunday from 7am to 12am. So when you think about it, $200 a month is not a lot.

However, my church has been doing medical trips to Haiti for the last few years so they finally set up a non profit organization a few months ago. Well, needless to say, the guy that was in charge of making the website bailed out and I just got a text saying that they would like to hire me to set up a website soon.

If you were me, how much would you charge to set up a wordpress website? Which wordpress theme would you use for a non profit medical organization?(free or paid)

I'm thinking that they are probably gonna want me to make sure that the website is always running without problems, if so, how much would you charge monthly to make sure the website is running smoothly?

Explain to them how religion is the #1 business in the world, and you feel you're being skimped

Then tell them $500 for a new website, and $1000 a month.

LOL! That's funny. But come on seriously. A reasonable price without making me look like i'm just in it for the money. Which i'm not, but I also value my time and want to be compensated.

Then it's a matter of figuring out how much your time is worth.

If not for the websites, how much time would you spend at church every Sunday? Let's assume 2 hours.

That means you're charging $77 an hour at $1000 a month, before website maintenance, media, and extra responsibility.

Fair to say you need an extra 7 hours per week on website maintenance and media?

At 7 hours per week, that's $23 an hour. More than reasonable, imo.

To tell you the truth, if I was asked point blank if I would be willing to do it for free, I would say yes only if it meant doing the setup only. However, if they wanted me to maintain it and add new content then I would say, NOPE sorry.

Ultimately, i'm in it to get paid for my work.

O.k. so from what i've been reading, the average cost of setting up a website is between $200 to $250. maintaining it with hosting is between $50 to $75 dollars a month. This sounds reasonable. I guess i'll guide myself with these guidelines.

So offer to create the blog for free (non-profit gesture) - calculate the hours it will take per month and charge a reasonable ongoing fee for maintaining the site. Also state the number of hours you plan to spend on the site weekly or monthly - so if more is expected of you later you can adjust the fee.

Why do you have to be there 5 hrs every sunday? Are you recording?

Yes, recording podcasts and I have to run the powerpoint for the music and the pastors sermon notes. there are 3 services so that is why i have to be there 5 hours. It's an easy job, that's why i agreed to do it for $200 a month.

I agree with Kay. Just charge a fee that is fair.

It is your church that you are helping. Think
of it as give them an offering on Sunday
                morning.

I think you already know what you want to charge,
you just want us to justify it for you.

                Go with your heart.

Lol. the offering comes out of my check. Yes i do have an idea, but some insight from fellow warriors is also helpful. So yes I am looking for some justification. Would $50 dollars a month just for maintenance seem fair?

I'd suggest donating it 100% provided you can work out all the legal ins and outs of writing your expenses and such off as a charitable donation (check with a tax accountant for the details)

I don't understand this. Can you explain some more. Wouldn't hiring a tax accountant cause me to lose money even if my expenses were written off as a donation?

And if you'd like to use Thesis, I can give you a copy for $40.

There's zero markup on that, as that's the development cost if buying only one.

I will suggest that you find out the rates for such
services in the area so that you can compare and
contrast before telling what you will charge. Most
likely the rates will be higher than yours. Then be
bold enough to charge something closer to, but
less than, what is the norm rate in the area.

It still really depends on what exactly needs to be done and how much time you will be spending on maintaining the site. I was once in a kind of deal where we agreed on a fixed price for setting up a website and then suddenly the client started piling up extra stuff and wanting changes here and there, taking up a lot more time than what was originally figured for.
If you will be maintaining the site, make them clearly understand how many hours max you will be working on it and make arrangements for overtime pay if that's exceeded.

So, what ever came of this, wicho696?

I just started going to this one church last year (50 members), and instantly found myself as the media guy running the easy worship and powerpoints, and even recording the master cd (for free). I love doing it.

I have volunteered my experience and time in the past with PC Technical stuff. Now the church head wants to hire me to redo their site.

Get this, they got suckered (imho) into paying $2500 three years ago for a flash site running joomla. They let the domain lapse and the site has been "404" for 3 months.

I have to start from scratch, and plan on doing a WP/Thesis install with custom home page (ala thesis hook) and custom design elements (header, buttons etc) Most of it will be static pages, but it will have a blog section, and an Events Calendar plugin.

I don't know what to charge for this, as I've never charged for a site, but i'm very good at it. I've done some research online for the USA, and the consensus is $1500. That is way more than half of what they paid 3 years ago.

I'll also be running the site, or the junior pastor can update it, as she has a personal WP Site now (that I helped her with for free as a consultant) so she can make posts and update the calendar.

I don't have any other job than pc tech stuff, and aff marketing (low $xxxx a month), and I don't want to seem greedy. However I feel $800 to $1200 is fair.

    What say you?

Setting up - or setting it up and maintain it each month?

For set up and install i would simply charge depending on complexity, how many pages the site has and how long i would spend setting it up. For a good quality site with several sub-pages this would be anywhere from $400 - $800, depending really. And for maintenance...if they pay $200/month for keeping content on there *once in a while* this is good. But if you work on that site a few hours every day i would charge MUCH more

It's about discussion you know, just come up with several numbers (like 400-500 bucks per month) and see what they'll tell. It also depends whether or not they have someone to replace you...
