VPS Recommendations?

I'm looking for a web hosting company that has an affordable VPS solution available, purely as a testing ground for something, so price is the pivotal factor as it's basically going to be a test box, no need for anything fancy except a LAMP environment.

Any suggestions?

    I am keeping an eye out for one also. I know there is a free one that works with Linux, Mac and MS, but I don't know the name.

    I'll be watching this tread for the answer.

    I've used Tektonic. It's pretty good, and a decent price.

    And I've heard good things about Linode. I think Linode even has a management app for an Android handset. Not sure what other phones are supported.

    I've tried many VPSes and many dedicated server companies.

    My recommendation would be LiquidWeb.com hands down. (their service is unmatched, and they're very much compared to RackSpace in terms of their 100% management service but much cheaper.

      Check out WiredTree. They have Managed VPS plans at really good prices. Their support team responds wicked fast.

      You might also check out the offers thread on the WebHostingTalk forums. Lots of good deals there if you decide to go with a different host.

        You've probably been reading their shared-hosting reviews. They're not bad, but you can get better (shared hosting)...

        ...But you can't beat their VPS. Period.

        Bottom line, for shared hosting you can't go wrong with HostGator. When it comes time to upgrade to a VPS or Dedicated Server LiquidWeb is the only company you need to look at.

        Why?

        - Because they own their own data-centers (99% of hosting companies rent other companies servers)
        - Because they operate in the black and have done so for years
        - Because their VPS and Dedicated Servers are Fully Managed
        - Because their support (for VPS and Dedicated) is fast (and onsite)
        - Because they're willing to help without billing for every little piece of assistance
        - Because their pricing is damn good
        - Because I said so (and I've done my homework.)

        Save yourself a lot of pain and go with LiquidWeb. And "no" I'm not an affiliate, just a happy customer for many years (around 5 years now, I think).

          I will wholeheartily agree with Vinnie. I've been with ALOT of hosting providers since 2003...and lot of 'name' services. I've been with Liquid Web for about 8 months now and they have been the best host I have ever had.

          I have a VPS (do not know about their shared offerings) and it has NEVER gone down...not once! This is pretty remarkable to me. Also, you can ALWAYS get someone on the phone and I've never waited more than 3 minutes to talk to someone. They are courteous and helpful and have never charged me once to do little fixes on my server that other providers would have charged for.

          I can't recommend them enough. Don't work for the company or anything. I just know what a pain in the rear it is to find good hosting.

          If you're halfway serious about being on the web pay the extra money and get a VPS with them. You will not be sorry.

    GoTekky. Hands down the best host I've ever used. It's a small operation, and you speak directly to the owner. He takes care of ALL his own equipment (very rare). He's always available and always more than willing to help.

    For $33/month. No one can touch those rates, or that I've seen. Best of all, his boxes are no where near overloaded.
