question about editing a jpg with gimp??

i am trying to capture a logo from a website and then edit the jpg using gimp.

i capture the image and when i go to edit it using gimp i get the logo but i also get a huge white space all around it and i cannot seem to get rid of the "space" no matter what i try.

all i want is a jpg of the logo with nothing around it. does ANYONE out there know how i might acheive this.....either using gimp or photoshop?

thanks in adavance for your time and your help.

If you are after getting the logo with the background transparent then you will not do this in any image editing program if you are saving as a JPG

JPG does not support background transparency, try saving it as GIF or TIFF instead

      thanks steve.

tried saving it as a gif. what i got was the image in the center of the page with white all around it.

i am trying to get rid of the white when it saves so i get ONLY the image.

i am CLUELESS as to how to do this, but figure it is probably not that hard to do.

      thanks again.

If it is a JPG you are trying to change you would probably need to be fairly adept with Photoshop or similar

I have recently done some graphics work for others on WF
        see post here: http://www.warriorforum.com/website-...ml#post2091030

If you like, you could send over the image and once I've done it for you, then you can make a donation of whatever amount you feel appropriate

As long as you have permission to copy this logo you can do this in Gimp by

    Call up the image

Add an alpha channel (transparent layer) to the image by CLICKING menu > LAYER > TRANSPARENCY > ADD ALPHA CHANNEL

select the wand (fuzzy selector) - and with it, click & select one of the areas around the logo you want to remove.

Clear that bit you chose by CLICKING menu EDIT > CLEAR (CTRL + K)

Repeat , clearing away the bits of white, until you just have the Logo left.

BUT since now your image has transparent background you cannot save it as a jpg so save in a transparent capable format, like GIF or PNG .

    Good Luck

um, if you are using a logo from someone's web site, you are infringing on their copyright. If it's from your web site I would think perhaps you could get it from the designer, no? (unless of course the relationship went bad)

it is work i am doing for a potential client. trying to do up a mock-up of a project i am proposing for them...so it is all good.

i could ask them for the logo but i am trying to kind of surprise them with this. nothing illegal.....at least i don't think it is.

I use Paint.net for most graphics work. I'm just used to it, and
    fast on it.

It has a magic wand. You just load your image, click on the area
you want to make transparent, then click delete. If it's an
    image on a white background it's easy-peasy.

    Save as a PNG.

save jpg as a gif file....not sure if i needed to do this but i did.

then framed up the image.....hit the IMAGE tab....then off the scroll down menu i hit CROP TO SELECTION.....and WHAM....i got EXACTLY what i wanted....just the image with NO white background.

thanks to all for jogging my mind a little bit and helping me find the solution to my problem with this.
