I think has been around for awhile, I remember looking into it last year. There are still the 10 minute restrictions aren't there? Plus I think for the most part we hope to have to share with more than 25 people. And I don't know if the video can be extracted then uploaded again as listed. Something to think about. Sorry to be a killjoy.

That'd be nice for some squeeze pages of mine. Use Youtube upfront for the tire kickers / first subscribers, then use my paid video service for the video tutorials inside. I bet it'd shave a good amount of expenses off my bill.

This is BRAND NEW. It was just released and got my mind thinking about it's many uses.

Before, you could share private URL's with only 25 people...but this lets you make the video private for life with unlimited unique visitors.

One thing they didn't mention was "embedding". Can these unlisted videos still embed on our sites?

I asked about this on the Youtube blog, but of course Google will take its own sweet time in getting around to that, so I just tried it on one of my channels. I made a video "unlisted" then sent that link to another computer. The video shows WITH embed features as normal, so I assume everything is okie dokie in that regard.

Seriously, I have so many videos that I give away, that I could certainly use Youtube unlisted for now.

I too, am thinking about these possibilities.

I also read somewhere that this new feature might be something you have to pay for in the future.

Not sure how this will benefit anyone if we have to pay to be unlisted.

I guess it will be kind of like paying the phone company to make your number private

When I read this the other day, I saw the YT blog post about it and read about the teacher using it, thought that's a good idea, but basically brushed it off. I just want to thank you Marty for bringing this up and giving your ideas, this can really have some good uses.

I actually used this service in another way the other day.

One of the affiliate software products I represent was planning a major update, and sent me a version of the software ahead of release. I made a video explaining the new features and posted it to youtube using the new UNLISTED feature. In other words, I did not want it released to my Youtube subscribers ahead of launch.

However I was able to embed the UNLISTED video on my my site allowing for a sneak preview to my selected email list, which they really appreciated.

Once I got the OK for the official release of the software, I then went to Youtube and changed the settings from UNLISTED to PUBLIC. It had the same URL and view count, so no other changes were needed and the video was released on my Youtube channel.

Pretty sweet feature IMO.

I know there are paid video players that work with amazon s3 and you can actually lock down your video so no matter who pinch your code there will not be able to play it on their site. viewers will have to go to the original site to watch.

However, no matter where you host videos - free or paid - this is virtually unavoidable if somebody really wants to do it. At least with Youtube, you can easily check your traffic data on any video you have on your channel and find the EXACT location (website) where people are accessing it.

I would also add that it's always best to brand your video so that no matter where a viewer watches it, it will be clear as to the original publisher of the video.

Trust me, if someone wants to rip your video, they can do it, even if it means recording it using screen capture software. That's why it's important to brand your videos.

Cool - thanks Marty. I was thinking it might be good if you have say and ebook course that you would like to make a video component available for as well. You could have the embedded links in the ebook. So "buy the ebook and get access to the video component as well" - kind of thing. Would that work?

Well before you private videos (up to 25 people) had to have a You Tube account, now with unlisted, the person you want to view does not have to have an account to view it.

That is still the same and doesn't really change anything. In fact I am kind of surprised Youtube is allowing this because I don't really see the upside for them. Free hosting, uncheck related videos... maybe a fee coming for this?? We will see.

Can anyone here confirm how you embed the code correctly within your web pages?

Im assuming that you simply replace the standard URL with the unlisted URL, correct?

For videos that were previously public, it appears that there is a delay due to processing time when changing between this setting and unlisted.

Thank you for bringing this point up! I am already reaping the benefits of this feature and while it may be something that will require money to utilize in the future it tells me to strike while the iron is hot.

Another excellent point that was brought up. Use it as a squeeze page benefit, and the content you charge for you place on your own hosting platform.

This can also be used to entice people to register for your email list as they will get more good video content when they register.

I use it as an video invoice platform personally. I SHOW clients what I did for them, and it is an instant ROI for them.

I use it to get to know my audience better. If I feel there are people who will really benefit from my content I introduce myself.

I use it to answer customer service questions, and when someone else asks the same question, I send the same video.

I use it to reduce confusion with VA's and clients to get them to better understand what I want/need/expect.

Videos CAN be embedded on a blog or website. You just have to go in through the edit feature of the video and click on view video on page. There you can change anything you need to embed, change color, size etc.

You can also use annotations to public videos, and vice-versa to really niche down and super target your audience.

It can be a great addition to a sales funnel or up-sale for preferred clients, affiliates, JV, etc.

It's a great way to test certain offers without confusing your audience. (by having it public and on your site)

There are many other ways to use this feature weather or not it will stay free.

Great, information, I can see the benefit to being able to limit access to a video, but I do sort of wonder about the benefits to youtube, unless it cuts down on bandwidth, I wonder if there will come a time where, google will start charging a fee to have videos on youtube, at least in a commercial capacity, I expect there would be a market, I would pay to be able to have anchor text, and link back to my own websites.

True this is viable as well, but I would say ONLY for low volume videos, and if you are okay to deal with the extra hassles and limitations of your video player and other features. If your site is on a shared host like most are, I would sooner forget about this and pay someone else to host it, which I do.

I experienced many delays and customer service head-aches with self-hosting and just cannot be bothered with it anymore, especially now given so many other more reliable hosting options out there.

  I have a question about the "unlisted" feature.
  
  Lets assume I have a video and I upload to You Tube and mark as unlisted.
  
  I now embed into a page on my blog.
  
  If a user visits that page and watches the video can they get the URL to the video?
  
  I am trying to prevent the sharing of my video and require people to only watch it at my blog.
  
  I am not sure if most people know this but on other You Tube videos that are embedded in pages you can usually double click the video and it will open a new window with the You Tub page of the video.
  
  If this was the case then someone could just double click the embedded video on my page and then copy the link from the new window that opened.
  
  They could then share the link to the video. That is what I am trying to avoid.
  
  Any suggestions without hosting myself?
