Depends on how you look at it.

The IP address of my internet gateway is allocated from a block leased by the Maple Valley substation of Comcast Cable.

But in reality, that's an hour's drive away.

I look at it this way...

I'd never heard of Maple Valley until an hour ago.

Now I have, and I can connect it with you (albeit tenuously...Comcastically)

Wouldn't you be a little worried if I managed to trace the MAC address of *your* router...triangualated it with at least 2 others in your neighborhood...and then told you where you lived within 10 yards?

            I might be.

I can cope with being accurate to within the nearest telephone exchange.

            Thanks!

              Nope.

Your cell phone is already broadcasting your location.

And Google is already recording the MAC addresses of wireless networks in their Street View vans.

So this nifty little privacy-destroying feature is probably going to be available to the general public within five years.

Privacy is disappearing. You can either freak out about it... or you can get used to it. But you can't stop it. Nothing can stop it.
