While I personally use PhotoShop and Lightroom in my own business, you might want to check out Pixlr.com which is a free online editing tool somewhat similar to PhotoShop. I'm not saying it does everything that PhotoShop does, but hey, it's free.

I have Gimp installed on my computer. Not saying i'm using it (much) as I don't do much designing myself, but I have it in case I need it

I would have to say Gimp is prolly the closest you're going to get to photoshop.. It works really well too and it's FREE!

Gimp is pretty good. Does everything I need which isn't much. There is online help, forums and video tutorials if you get stuck with anything. Even the website design part of this forum had at least one person give me a good answer when I needed it.

It is a large download. It is also a large program and a little slow starting but that's easy to work around and the free part is instant.

Gimp is the way to go if you want something free but editor like Photoshop. However, it may depend on your requirements.

I've been trying to find Photoshop alternatives since switching to Ubuntu and I can say without doubt there is no equivalent if you need to do fully fledged graphic design.

The layer style effects and filters are unparalleled I'm afraid.

However, if you just need to do relatively simple things I have found that the best one seems to be an online editor: Photo editor online pixlr free edit image direct in your browser

I tried GIMP, GimPhoto, Xara and one other GIMP offshoot I can't remember the name of.

I found the online editor to perform better than all of them.

Both GIMP and GIMPShop are excellent programs
for the price, and they do everything the average
marketer needs.

However, if you want to do 3D book covers and
boxes, you're gonna have to bite the bullet and get
Photoshop, I'm afraid.

If you look on Ebay, you can find older versions of
PS for pennies on the dollar, and they're legal as
long as you get the original disc when you buy.

I started out with a copy of PS 5 way back in '03
that I bought from a friend who had upgraded. Paid
$100 for it, then later, bought the upgrade to CS2
for $149.

Be sure to check out Welcome to Aviary It's free, it's online, powerful, and you can do a lot with it! They have quite a few different apps there, and even have a multitrack audio app. Well worth checking.

  I personnally use GIMP.
  
  However, as I dont use it very often, I forget how to do certain things. I dont find the on-line help very useful.
  
  The best source of help I find is Youtube.
  
  I will check out some of the other free options and see if they are easier to use and learn.
