Micro-Niche Marketing - Can I Make Good Money Without A List?

Ok so here is my basic business model:

- A website/blog with pages for all the keywords I can find.
- A review page and affiliate links on that blog
- All articles are indexed on my site then sent to about 10 directories
- I built links from RSS, social bookmarking, profiles, web 2.0's, etc to my pages to rank them
- This site is promoting one clickbank product

Ok so here's the thing, I want to know if creating an autoresponder series and putting a form on my little site will REALLY increase conversions to the point that it's worth writing and testing email series' or if I should spend this time making more content/starting a new niche/ranking my pages?

Edit: The old thread about this wasn't clear about what I was asking.

Yes you can. I do it. When adding an autoresponder you just need to adjust your niche. Physical products such as coffee tables and such, forget the list cause it just doesn't fit the business model but if your niche is make money, lose weight, etc then yes build that list.

The money is in the list but the market has to fit that model.

This is very sound advice. There's no one size fits all way of doing things when it comes to IM.

Its impossible to master something that is ever evolving.

Agreed, it would not make sense to send auto-responder messages to people about a coffee maker...

See I'm not talking about it in the "market future products to them" way... but what I'm concerned about is the difference in conversion rates between suggesting a product just from a review pages vs having an opt in, building trust, and then suggesting it down the road.

Yeah that's a proven strategy (for some)-- if I read you right -- like a mini-course or tips and/or benefits to using that product. As I'm sure you know there is really only one way to find out -- split test. I know its a lot of work for what not be profitable but again that would be another weapon in your arsenal for a future product/mini-site.

Sure, you can make money without a list this way. I've found it generally better to do mini-info/review sites about physical products in association with an affiliate program from ones like Amazon and eBay to smaller players you find on Commission Junction and such rather than trying this with Clickbank style products.

As for list building in product niches, I'd only do this if I was selling products and wasn't just an affiliate. If I ever get back into dropshipping again I'd certainly build a list. But now, I prefer acting as a simple traffic conduit, much like a billboard or a freebie advertising magazine does.

I build my sites the same way. I would still build a list regardless whether I was selling physical products or not. If I had a lawnmower site, I'd try to sell something related to the list like gardening books or whatever.

The best way to find this out is by testing. But yes definitely build a list.
Simply because you say your promoting 1 product, however, with a list this could turn into several products.

Having a list allows you to build your own products with almost instant success if your sending your list the right quality iinformation.

If you plan on having this site up for a LONG time (which it sounds like you do) then you should take the day or so it takes to set up a list. Give away something small to get people on your list, then market them the clickbank product through a series of pre-written emails.

Once you do it, it will be set up forever and run on auto-pilot. And I would suspect it will increase your conversions a lot with some decent email copy.

You don't ever have to broadcast to that list, but if you want to someday you'll be able to.

I would definitely give it a shot!

The problem is that any list building on these niche sites is a distraction. If I want to build a list I want the site 100% focused on that. If I want affiliate/Adsense/CPA income, I want the site 100% focused on that. More general sites allow for more flexibility but for a targeted niche site you need to have a laser focus on the objective and not take a shotgun approach.

As I mentioned, I compare the sites to a freebie advertising magazine that you might pickup outside a restaurant or store. The publisher of the magazine isn't concerned about getting people to subscribe to the magazine but from making money from advertisers.

There are tons of marketers who make some nice cash flow with out having a list but I think you are losing a lot of money on the table without having a list. I say that is because when someone purchase anything from you how can you re direct them to purchase something from you again in the future.

It good to have those repeat customers, and if your writing articles you want at least get the e-mail address of the person who reading them

Ug lol I'm so stuck on this. One thing I'm thinking of doing is split testing by giving the site a month without opt-in and then trying another month with the list.
