Is there too much competition out there nowadays to even consider setting a web proxy site up? Is there anyone here making any money of this?

I'm thinking about it, but I don't want to have waste money investing in a domain. I've found a PR4 domain, 4 years old, and it has a few backlinks. In my head I was thinking if I optimized for a few long tail keywords perhaps I can get some nice traffic and pay back for the domain eventually. Does anyone think it's a smart idea to buy an aged domain for a web proxy purpose and hope that it would pay for it self?

It isn't that expensive.. It's $70 dollars, but I'm not sure if it really will pay back for it self.

I don't know if the fact that the domain is aged and has PR4 really would help to rank a proxy site. What do you think wise man?

I think if you have a definate plan to promote the site -- like to office people who nowadays have very limited web access due to filters from their higher ups for example (a few well choosen and placed words on CL could probably do that for you)-- than maybe that could help offset the investment as u fight ur way up the SERPs. Also it is not common knowledge to the casual surfer that such a thing even exists -- exploit that too.

Yea, there are a few terms related with proxy that receive over a million monthly searches (according to google keyword tool), so many people search, but the competition is also very high.

I also wanted to see if anyone here on these forums actually owns a proxy site, because there a millions of them so they must be profitable? Anyway thanks for your reply, Wise Man

      EDIT:

@Ryan D I can't believe you call that the old fashion way. But ya, I've built a personal blog site that gets about 1K visitors/day and has no ads. It was never intended to make money, but I do know how to promote a site.

I don't think I can buy my own server yet.. But it sounds like you might. Do you actually have proxy sites up? and thanks for the recommendations, you seem knowledgeable .

Proxy biz these days needs more than 1 domain and needs a good promotion plan. With this you need a solid server, not shared or a VPS but your own server.
For income you need a source of pop up advertisers and CPM. competition is bad so you want to make sure you are reliable and have better load times.
Bonus would be if your proxy script supports face book,Myspace, YouTube. Best Script out there right now would a CGI based as it supports almost all JS calls. But you need to know a bit of Perl

I had a server with about 45 proxies. Server Cost me 199 dollars Revenue was about 350. All my promotion was SEO based. If I was to do it again I would set 1k aside for advertising. Get the same size server. Look at what CPM companies are accepting Proxy Traffic. See what Pop unders are available for proxy traffic
I would have my template on the proxied page have a top and bottom Banner
Do you know main proxy discussion forum if not PM me
