WSO Titles: Can We Draw a Line?

Suggestion/Request for the WSO forum: Can we please draw a line on the titles? I just dropped in there a minute ago and was hit with stuff like this:

■░▒▒▓▓██

and it immediately turned me off and made me click away. It also made me really glad I don't have a WSO running anywhere near that crap right now.

I do draw the line - I don't purchase from anyone using those tactics.

I don't even read their WSO sales page and doubt I've missed anything of much importance.

Just ignore those offers then (just a thought).

Yup, while we are at it can we also eliminate using uppercase letters every other word...and dashes as well. Those are kind of annoying.

Screw that, I'm tired of seeing offers, period.

The entire WSO section should get wiped out.

Just a bunch of people trying to sell stuff!

Does anyone remember the early days of eBay?

            Practically everybody was using:

            L@@K

            UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

            MUST SEE!!!!!

            W@W!

I remember when I first became a powerseller back then...and was shocked that so many business' were using this stuff (and wasting the keyword space) to try and promote their listings.

            Something like:

1GB Sony Memory Stick Brand New In Box

really starts to stand out when everybody else is using:

XXXXXX WOW XXXXXX !!!!! MUST SEE!!! Sony MS

I can see how some would find the various symbols annoying.

But this is a marketing forum, and marketers are testing out their headlines...so I can see it going both ways.

That said, I haven't tried any of the crazy stuff myself...but I am tempted. Those headlines definitely stand out on the page, that's for sure.

That's what this thread is about after all, we aren't talking about someone using the capital letter "A".

Precisely. If there is something here I don't care for, I just ignore it - and I'm sure others do the same. For every person that dislikes a particular tactic there is another who thinks it's a great idea.

You saw 1-2 WSOs with a ridiculous graphic in the title and you're upset? Cripes. Talk about low tolerance. I'd be more upset at the size of font the guy used within the ad itself... so huge it pushes your eyeballs into the back of your skull... and the page right off the screen.

Kay, finally i have something to say thanks to you.. :-) .. i agree wholeheartedly

WSO is a marketplace, and like any other place, people will try anything to attract people to their ads..

Now, the guy must be trying out his WSOcampaign, and could honestly be just testing..

Wouldnt it be nicer to just prompt the guy in PM (i have done this before succesfully several times) then call his product CRAP for no other reason?

Okay, I just took a look at the WSO in question.

Here is my honest reaction to it.

It looked like a full blown over the top sales letter. Maybe more full blown
than anything I've ever seen, but then again, I don't spend all day looking at
          sales letters.

Personally, it's not my cup of tea. For one thing, there is no way I'd ever
take the time to go through all of that. I don't have the patience. But I've
seen some sales pages that are just as long, if not longer. And from what
the top copywriters tell me, long copy and hype sell.

Here's the bottom line for me:

It's not for me and I'd never purchase from something so hyped up.

Having said that, if the person isn't lying, is delivering a quality product,
and honors any refunds, if he gets requests for them, then I see nothing
wrong with what he is doing. If it converts for him AND he's delivering a
real product, then ethically, I don't see the problem.

There will be some who will like this kind of advertising and there will be
some who don't. But until the powers that be decide that this type of
promotion isn't allowed, I don't see where this person has done anything
          wrong.

If you don't like his methods, don't buy. It's really that simple.

Having said all of that, why do marketers complain about the way other
          people market.

I'm more concerned about somebody telling me that his product will do
          XYZ and doesn't do it.

In other words, a sales page that simply said this...

My Product Will Earn You $100 A Day Guaranteed

and didn't do what it said it would do is worse than any hyped up sales
page that DOES at least deliver a product with some value.

That's just this simple marketer's take on this whole thing.

I can see why people might not like the weird items in the title, but bottom line...IT GETS MORE VIEWS.

I have an offer available right now using the same thing almost. I started the offer without and then added them in and the difference has been enough that it does not bother me if a couple people think it is an eye sore.

That does not mean that I don't believe that people are not entitled to have their own opinions about a matter, it just means that as long as it is ethical, I want as many eyes on my offer as possible.

The headline IS part of the whole sales letter and is included in my feelings.

To me, it's annoying and cheesy looking. But that's just me.

      Some might like it.

        Steven,

Because it is taking attention away from other WSOs. I have one in there now that you can't even hardly see.

If you are scanning the WSO section, which a lot of people do...you will go right by mine without even seeing it.

        It's a bunch of BS.

What does ◄◄◄◄ have to do with anything? That's not a title.

What if these characters started plaguing the main forum?

For those of us who are marketing with integrity, I'm sure you understand why we want to see it disappear.

I used asterisks and <> before, just to get my WSO seen with all the rest of them! And they didn't make a damn bit of difference in page views or conversions.

This actually brings up what could be a fascinating conversation. I wish
Paul Myers was here because he would, I am sure, shed some interesting
          thoughts on this.

          Here's how I see it.

You call this marketing "without" integrity. Well, some might say that any
IM related product that tells how you can make all this money is
          marketing without integrity.

And as far as "drawing attention to your WSO" and away from the other
WSOs, well, I think they call that marketing. Now, if Allen Says feels that
these symbols or whatever are no acceptable for WSO titles, then he'll
ban them. And those that still use them will have their WSOs deleted.

In order for that to happen though, it needs to be brought to his attention
personally through a PM, and not through this forum as these are the kinds
of rants that he has, quite often, said he didn't want to see here.

Make a formal complaint and see what he says.

Personally, I'd never buy from somebody who goes to over the top like
that. But others may. If the marketer is NOT breaking any rules and is not
cheating his prospects and customers, then it is up to us, as marketers
competing with him, to adapt, unless again, Allen Says bans these type of
          titles.

If I were in a bad mood I would say:

OK, well I'm off to the website with the biggest database of key code characters I can find. I suggest all WSO posters do the same.

If one person can do it, then we all can. That will at least erase any advantage they have of getting their stuff seen over ours, which we know is the only reason they do it.

Let's completely fill up the forum with a bunch of characters. Let's overload it with crap characters so nobody will even go there anymore.

At least then my $20 will be worth the same as theirs!

But I'm in a good mood, so I won't say that.

Well, you see, Steven. People start threads like this and the rest of us encourage it by adding our comments. If the Warriors simply ignored such threads, they'd quickly disappear. But unfortunately, some Warriors feel the need to respond, and so the problem manifests... potentially jeopardizing the WSO section (as has been repeatedly stated in other threads like this). Sorry to say, I am one of those Warriors, but I'm never the first one to add my comments. It's time we used our own common sense and began ignoring this type of thread.

For what it's worth. I just went over to the WSO forum and the place

C'mon Steve, a carnival? Please... you bash these WSOs that are doing what
they know, yet live almost your entire earnings from forums alone.

I am not trying to be a beehive kicker, but isn't the idea of marketing to make your ad stand out?

I don't see issues with the headlines. Maybe I am missing something. If there were obnoxious flashing symbols or something of that nature, maybe, but all I see are symbols in the same color as the rest of the headline.

John look, I saw the forum, I saw the titles, I saw the graphics and it
looks like a carnival to me. What do you want me to say? What that has
to do with my telling people to build a real business and how I choose to
                  run MY business is irrelevant.

And if you read what I said, I didn't go on record as saying that I believe
that these titles should be taken down. What I said was, if the members
have a problem with them, they should report it to Allen Says and let him
                  decide.

Now, if you want to call me out and pick a fight with me (seems to be the
popular thing today) please understand that I won't just stand here and
allow you to punch me in the face.

I'm sorry...but what happened to letting free market enterprise decide what's good, bad, or ugly...in terms of a WSO's worth or lack thereof?

Cuz I trust free market enterprise.... more then individual rants, raves, and various other opinions.

Truth is, the cream rises to the top...whether it's a WSO...or the game of life. That's just the way it is.

The chick in the bikini title might get more views....but so what?

Why is that unfair to the rest of us?

Since when did a unique headline...become an unfair advantage????????? And why would people think that? Why would some of you'se people even care??????

How does this so-called title prove lack of integrity? And why would it make someone not want to buy someone else's WSO? Doesn't make sense to me.

Maybe it's proof of their ingenuity.....as they figured out a way to seperate their WSO from a mass of others with "respectable titles."??? Maybe an ad with "the chick in the bikini" is a good thing. Maybe not.

But why bitch and whine about it? Let the market run its course.

I have no clue about this person's WSO. I don't care....enough to have an opinion either way.

      If I like it...like the offer...the promoter...I'll buy. If I don't...I won't.

But I wont give it a second thought or lose a second of sleep over it either.

Cuz I decided long ago.....it's best to worry about Vegas Vince...and less about the The Jones Family. Capiche.

More of you'se people should take that advice....and worry about your own lives...and less about mine or the neighbors or some WSO with a title that you'se don't like. Cuz the only one who truly cares about you the most...is you'se. Truth. You know it...too.

Free market is a wonderful thing, Warriors. It's honest. And I'm not interested in tweaking, twisting, or otherwise screwing with it.

I continue to fail to understand why so much time is devoted to what others are doing. That's reactive...not proactive. And it's not productive either. The time could be better spent sellin' something of YOUR OWN.

A product or a service you stand behind. That's integrity.

  • I'm sure that somebody will split test this.

But, another issue is that I very rarely check the Special Offer forum index (just too time constraining and the continual bumping is annoying). Instead I use the WSO2Email mailing list and look for anything which looks enticing. The special characters don't show in that view.

I imagine that many others do likewise.

So, that special characters might not have the overall effect that the sellers believe that they are having.

My great annoyance, in fact, is the number of marketers who find a way to modify their offer so that it shows up multiple times via WSO2Email (I've never worked out exactly what the criteria is, but presumably it's based on the RSS feed, and might include such factors as small edits to the title). This can mean that you get variants of the same offer multiple times in succession.

Wow how's that for starting a controversial topic?

This thing exploded so I haven't read all the comment yet, but I do want to set the record straight on a couple of things:

    1. I have no idea who's WSO I used as an example, I just grabbed a piece of a title to show an example of what I was talking about.

    2. I have no idea what was being offered in the WSO, I didn't bother looking because I immediately clicked away.

I was not speaking about any one specific offer, product, or person. Just the way the forum itself looked when I landed in it.

I personally have an immediate gut reaction to seeing a lot of strange characters on my screen: OH SHIT!

Why? Because that's the kind of stuff you see when you've been hit with a virus, rogue script, or your computer just hosed for whatever reason.

    Guru G Again,

    Ultimately it's up to Allen.

Personally your foul language is much more offensive to many than a funny symbol in the headline.

I realize to some here your language is perfectly acceptable and not foul at all and I know others here who refuse to talk like that in a public forum.

The point? If we all got our pet peeves enforced there would be no forum.

If he did, the main forum wouldnt be cluttered w/ WSO bitch/complaint/suggestion threads.

It would also be interesting to see who stays and who gos.

And they didn't make a damn bit of difference in page views or conversions....
Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black? You're using asterisks and <> and see that as being different as using ◄◄◄◄? It's the same exact thing. They are all techniques to make people see your WSO stick out.

Personally I could care less about symbols, if you get me with a good title you'll get me to view your WSO. Symbols mean nothing, but weird symbols like that guy used are what you call innovation and thinking outside the box.
░▒▒▓▓██ That's one of the best ways of making money, by innovating and thinking outside the box.

Let the market factors work...when we see those, no one click on the WSO and they will stop using those stupid tactics. Otherwise, its like Nancy Grace, the more we talk about it, the more traffic they get.

That's couldn't care less as in I could NOT care less about this. Now, on to my main point. I would like to point out that this thread actually has brought more views to those WSO posts, so is actually at cross purposes with itself. I am glad that my post has also compounded the problem How do I get a smiley into my WSO thread title?

    TomG.

OOHHHH!!! Darn it, I wasted my 1,000 post on this crap (did I say crap?). I guess I have to wait until 1,500 to give something free away. Oh wait, I already did that...

I like it when these people are easily identifiable.

Therefore, I vote against taking away their ability to shoot themselves in the foot. Because without the limp, they'll blend in with the rest of us.

Thank you!!!! You're my hero. 99/100 people say "I could care less" and hardly anyone knows it's "I could not care less". Always been a huge pet peeve. Finally, somebody who knows the right way to say it!! I thought I'd never meet anyone who knew the right way to say it.

        Josh,
But this is a marketing forum, and marketers are testing out their headlines...so I can see it going both ways.
That said, I haven't tried any of the crazy stuff myself...but I am tempted. Those headlines definitely stand out on the page, that's for sure.
Hmmm. You must have just decided to try it out. Screaming symbols and all caps.

Screw 'em. Let 'em do it. I won't bother going there much myself, since it makes the entire section harder to follow. But that's just me.

Happens every time someone discovers you can use those characters. A few people do it, and others decide they have to scream louder than the first folks. Pretty quick it's an annoying jumble of shouting sellers, each trying to outdo the others, with more odd characters and more outrageous claims.

When folks find out it works, more people do it and it gets less effective. When it quits working as well, people start gaming the system in other ways.

It's a downward spiral that has happened in the same way every place I've seen it allowed.

That's my personal opinion, based on my experience, of course. As long as Allen allows it, it's okay. But I won't do it.

In the long run, it's destructive.

Big Mike, I'd say you're probably right, but without a way to split test open rates, you can't know for sure.
