Best way to get traffic?

Good Evening!
I just joined this forum so I'm not sure if this is the best place to put this question...

I have recently started a new website that is dedicated to creating a new social network built around what the users want. Yes, the idea has come from the multiple users leaving facebook including many of my own friends. LOL!

Anyway, my question is, what are some good (free/cheap) ways of marketing this type of site?

As you will see, if you click the link in my signature, we currently have 2 focuses:

1. raise support for the project.
2. get people to participate by telling us what they want in our forum.

Other than asking my friends and family to spread the word, do you all have any ideas?

Thanks!
Dave Welch

Well many of the popular social media sites got popular becuase people naturally talked about it, so find a way to let people talk about your website. Try to find some viral marketing campaign you can do.

You should have thought about how you were going to generate buzz and get traffic before you built your website...

For a project of this kind you need generate an absolute ton of visitors. So press releases, television appearances, viral video marketing etc.

I don't know how big of an advertising budget you have, but I read recently that for anyone interested in creating their own social networking site, they would need $50 million plus. Just to make a splash.

I'm not trying to be negative or anything, but if you want to make this work you have to get huge attention and a very unique concept.

Whenever we would email our users, we'd see a spike of traffic -- existing users coming back to see what we've been up to. In my experience and also from what I have heard many times over the years, traffic exchanges are basically worthless. You might get traffic but the traffic you get are just other marketers trying to get traffic to their own sites.

Twitter, Facebook and Some more social networking sites will help you get traffic. Because users over there are familiar with the concept and probably wants some more. So advertising over there is the best option. Do not think about SEO if your site is about Social Networking. Think about the users and their convenience.

I think, guest blogging on websites related to Social Media can be of immense help. It gives you relevant exposure and brings-in a lot of traffic provided the content is quality.

There is no 'best' way - there are MANY ways and their results depend on a lot of things, including your knowledge, experience, tools, niche, products, services etc...

XML sharing (PADs, Feeds, Sitemaps, RSS etc.)
    Wikis
    Article directories, and reprinted articles
    CPA
    PPV
    Tell-A-Friend scripts
Twitter , myspace, youtube, facebook etc…
    PRs
    Sofware links (PAD)
    Datafeeds
    PPC
    Videos, audios
    RSS
JVs - ezine, links, ty page, A/Rs
offline (physical books, testimonials/forwards in other peoples books - word of mouth, seminars, networking, business cards, radio advertising, tradeshows, workshops, roadshows, mail, local sponserhips etc)
    Recommendations

buying other websites with existing traffic and links
buying expired domains with existing traffic
    Outsourcing sites - Elance etc.
    Traffic swaps

It's probably the easiest but it won't give you a ton of traffic really quick; it takes time to develop. it's seem that you need to have a huge marketing budget and blast ever known and conceivable traffic source out there!

I recommend before you take another step, clarify the value proposition of yet another social network (there are thousands!!)

Why do I need another one?

      What's wrong with Facebook?

      What's different about you...

There is no sense sending traffic to your site until you can clearly make the case why someone should signup.

Myspace started by attracting music fans, Facebook attracted highschool and college kids (that's how word spread), Twitter really took off after a celebrity or two joined...

In short, make your value proposition clearer, and start by targeting a subset of the population AND get an influential leader to sign on to get things rolling.

        Great answer Jeff.

Did anyone else actually read the OP?

He hasn't actually created a social networking site.

Hes created a blog which asks for donations and ideas to create a social networking site.

Why would you write articles? What would they be about and who would read them?

SEO? What keywords are you going to target?

I think you need to look at your business plan and who would actually want to donate and invest in your company.

Why would I pay you any money to share ideas with you, in the hope that one day you create a social networking site that includes my idea?

If you want a "user" created social network. Get people to suggest things for free. make it go viral. Then build the social network. Then get investors to promote heavily once its gathering buzz and excitement.

Just my opinion. It's 2 AM and I might be missing something here

I agree, there is no BEST way, the effort should be collective in nature. You should work on the different SEO techniques all at the same time if you want to reach an optimal result. Don't just rely on Backlinking alone, it's not effective.

Ye... I think you should start advertizing firstly on social networks. But to grab peoples attention you will need to make sure that your social website will deliver to them something unique and never seen before. And what can it be? Thats what you must ask yourslef.

    Hi

Providing very nice content and an overwhelming experience to your users can be the best way to do it. A project like this must be viral, so I believe that if users really enjoy the experience they will create a buzz and traffic will flood.

    That's how Facebook started, right?

Anyway, I don't have a big experience in driving traffic, I'm conducting some experiments, if you want to now about them I'm describing them in my blog, in a post called Traffic and List Building.

    My 2 cents.

It takes a long time, but you MUST have in place an incentive for your new members to come back AND to tell their friends about it.

You must have a niche that you are targetting - Facebook's original niche was focussing on college/students and marketing through those channels. You couldn't even access the site unless you were a student, then when they opened the doors to everyone it was big enough that it already had that momentum.

Also look at the facebook homepage when you are not logged in.. The BEST squeeze page on the internet, but remember its what is what you do outside your website to attract traffic that matters - video is a great way of gaining traffic but be fun and original and keep posting new video eventually you will get followers and they will come to your site.

I think a good idea to creating a social community that draws in other services like twitter, youtube etc. all onto your own profile on your site is a great idea if you could do that.

Also, for that kind of budget $5m you will need to approach venture capital companies and have an almighty business plan and a better website and brand / domain name.

best way to get traffic is to make sure you understand and implement the sales process... If you get this right all traffic sources are the best way.

knowing how much you make on average from every visitor or every signup is key to getting your traffic sources prioritised.

Traffic is only of use to you when you understand the above
