7 Habits of Highly Defective Posters

... with apologies to Scott Adams and Stephen Covey.

Think of this as a course on how to bin friends and influence moderators. Feel free to add your own creative comments.

Tell me a story, Mommy!: "Honest, Officer, I wasn't even there. It was the guy next to me!"

Look, if you're going to lie, keep it simple and believable. Don't try to be clever. Every time you do that, you're repeating the same "creative story" some dozen or so other morons have told us before. You would be truly amazed at how often this stuff repeats. It's like a steady diet of bad burritos.

How exactly do people think it helps to have a moderator catch them in an outright fabrication? Maybe they should catalog their BS, so they don't contradict themselves every time they open their mouths...

Dear Liary,

Today I told Paul that the fake screen shots I used as income proof in my WSO were the fault of the outsourcer that did my sales copy. I think he believed it. Maybe I can get him to JV with me!
That happened, by the way...

Yeah. Really.

Deep Post: Don't suck up to the moderators. It just makes us suspicious. We know what you're after, and we're just waiting for you to make your move so we can slap you stupider.

Play with Dolls: "Sock puppets, trolls and shills, Oh MY!" No, Dorothy, you're not in Kansas anymore, no matter what your IP address says.

Fake accounts created to shill products, avoid the consequences of abusive posting, or just argue without having to deal with the backlash that comes with being stoopid. Even with proxies, these people leave trails and evidence. Anyone who's clever enough to do this effectively isn't so clueless that they need to bother.

Interestingly, the worst of these have unconscious habits of word choice and typing patterns that are unique (and invisible) to them. They're like ID badges to the rest of the world, though. "Hey! Over here in the mask. It's me. I'm Jim!"

If they only had a brain...

Karma Chameleon: Also called "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud," this trick is as bad as the movie and the song. In the same soundtrack.

These are the single most inane group of the bunch. They get run off, and they come back with new names and identities, thinking they can start all over with whatever it was that got them nuked in the first place. And when you catch them, they act like their new profile and IP address are a "Get out of hell free" card or something.

Some people's kids, eh?

A ban isn't on your account. It's on you, personally. If it's permanent, that does not mean you get to pretend to be someone else and come back with a clean slate. I don't care if you call yourself Lazarus Long, Woodrow Wilson Smith, or H.R. Puffnstuff.

The Resurrection: Whenever I see this one, I hear a Randy Travis lyric run through my head... "Diggin' up bones, I'm diggin' up bones, Exhuming things that's better left alone."

This is mostly a trick of link-spammers. They seem to think that commenting on old posts is a good way to add their sig file links without being noticed. They don't understand that, the way vBulletin works, they're screaming "Smuck alert!" when the ancient thread shows up on the front page after a 3-year hiatus.

"Stupid, stupid rat creatures."

Mightus Wellby, MD (JD, PhD, DVM and DNRC): If you are not a doctor, lawyer or Indian Chief, don't play one on the Internet. It just causes problems for people who don't understand that people in regulated professions don't give professional advice in online forums.

This also includes forum lawyers, those annoying trolls who seem to think that moderators are constrained to a literal interpretation of what's written, only what's written, and how the trolls interpret what's written.

Sorry. Thanks for playing.

Oh, and that whole "First Amendment, free speech" thing? You may want to talk to someone who actually earned passing marks in 8th grade civics before you make a fool of yourself publicly. Or read it for yourself, paying special attention to the first 5 words...
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
We ain't Congress, bay-bay. And online, that's just a local ordinance anyway.

Stealth Bummer: "Look, Ma. They like me. They really like me. I'm going to run a WSO!"

Yet another in the long series of boring re-runs churned out by people who think they're clever and original. You come up with a burner of a thread title, hint at wildly profitable new techniques, create discussion, and then...

"Wow. This thread is so popular that I've decided to detail the whole method and offer it for cheap as a WSO. Just to help my fellow Warriors!"
How touching.

Look. I like good schlock as much as anyone. I'm a big fan of "Andromeda," "Batman" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," after all. But if you're going to do a bad copy of an outdated comedy, maybe it should be "Get Smart" instead of "Rank and Stinky?"

The Internet: 10 million channels, and nothing new to watch.

No seriously though, I can see how moderating a forum full of Internet Marketers is probably the most difficult type of forum to moderate.

You really broke it down and made it fun to read at the same time.

Nope. They're all the same. We had nearly identical challenges back in the Fidonet daze, on the non-sports trading card echo.

Paul's right. You get a number of people in any forum and the bottom feeders start coming out of the woodwork.

People also don't seem to realize that webmasters and moderators don't just live in their own little corner of the web. We get out too. For example, if you do some work for someone and get paid the agreed-upon price, and then basically trash that person on your blog because the pay wasn't enough, you might not want to then turn around and ask that same person for more work at that same agreed-upon price. Just saying...

Try moderating a forum of 100K+ hardcore, rightwing political activist firearm owners who all think Glenn Beck is the messiah and hand out free tinfoil at their get-togethers.

Those who ask for opinions, but really want justification for something underhanded. And then go on to argue with everybody who even barley disagrees with the answer they wanted to hear.

Or, those who start a post to share their own opinions, or "facts" and then tell people with differing viewpoints to shut up.

I started this thread to share something good. If you don't like it, then keep your thoughts to yourself.
If you don't understand the meaning of "forum" then you shouldn't be allowed to post in one.

All you WF folks will listen to me. I'm the expert. I need to position myself as the expert. So I'm going to take a strong stand on some issue, make a post about it... and then stick with it no matter what ("that's my story and I'm sticking to it").

I don't care if every well-respected member of the forum and every expert tells me I'm wrong. I am right. I NEED to be right. Because if I'm not right, how the hell do I position myself as the expert? Who the hell will buy my WSO?

Eventually I'm going to see I'm outnumbered. If I'm not totally clueless, I may even realize that my position is... wrong. But I'll never admit it. NEVER!

Instead, I'll shoot down the messengers. I'll attack them personally. I'll say nasty things about their mothers.

The thread will go down in a big ball of flames... and get nuked.

And thank goodness, because then all the evidence is gone.

The grendel with PTSD who gets stuck on the front line in the forum general discussion forum. Was once a generally happy-go-lucky sort of chap until he thought he'd make friends and garner influence by agreeing to to do the dirty work of the forum owner... err... thought he was getting some sort of pat on the back by being offered the opportunity to babysit and change diapers... errr.... bring balance and friendly exchange to the forum. Can't retire because nobody else is gullible enough to step to the plate. See them in their tiny office that was converted from the last stall of the staff bathroom. They won't let me have fingerpaints. The images are too disturbing...

I can tell you, I would not even consider doing this solo here again. Having a mittfull of mods makes it possible to, for example, take a few weeks off from it and remember what the real world is like.

Definitely have to work the mods into that list, though. We are, by definition, highly defective people.

Never, ever, ever make a moderator of someone who actually wants the job. There is no less-qualified candidate on the planet.

The job of moderating a forum of any sort should be undertaken with a heavy sigh and the distinct air of martyrdom. Ave, Caesar, te morituri salutamus. There is no glory in it, there is no gratitude, and basically you're volunteering to do thankless work forever while people hate you for no good reason.

I have just been reminded of another one. Tommy Tunnelvision. This strange creature believes that moderators know only what happens within the confines of the forum. They forget that we all have businesses of our own which take us outside occasionally. And that, by the nature of the task of moderating, we know a lot of people.

              People who tell us things.

These folks allow themselves to indulge the fantasy that they can use a forum thread as part of a smear campaign, or other game, and that we'll never find out or do anything about it. And that there's zero chance of getting caught in the lie.

              Peek-a-boo-oooo!

I don't get that one, since this is the only sandbox I play in that I don't own.

Thing is, I know a lot of people. More from outside this forum than from here. And most of them know that I consider it Bad Mojo to screw with my friends when they haven't earned it. And I have a really long memory for that...

Since I play in a lot of sandboxes, often for years at a time, I frequently end up temporarily in charge of things whether I want to be or not. (I once had to moderate a poetry mailing list for two months.) But like I said, you have to be at least a little bit crazy to actually want the job, so priority number one when I'm in charge of those things is to find my replacement and GTFO.

But it seems like the times I get dinged for that job all tend to happen when:

                    - A new rule is proposed over some personal vendetta of the admin
                    - I protest the new rule because it will inspire community backlash
                    - The rule is implemented anyway and OMFG, community backlash

So when I go from very vocal and active to virtually silent because I'm busy moderating, the people behind the backlash think I left the site over the rule change, and try to recruit me for mischief.

                    Which is rather convenient, really.

I was on The Admin Zone's "new forum" squad for a few years. Every month, a dozen or so forums would be listed, and the squad would go join them and make a bunch of posts. This made the forum feel active, because it was, and a month of that was usually enough to bootstrap the forum into having its own active user base.

And then I had a dispute with one of the mods at TAZ, so they banned me. Years of contribution to the forum, but someone in charge gets a hare up their arse and it's out the door forever.

Of course - having a hair up your arse isn't abnormal at all. It's having a hare up it that makes you behave strangely.

My sympathies... that's never easy. Been there too. But personally, at the first sign of personal vendetta time, I draw my line in the sand. If the admin crosses it, I get out of the sandbox and I go to build my own.

Dissing and shouting, reminds me of the gunslinger days... Okay people I am taking over the thread now, caus no one knows what they are talking about.

Last time I saw this on the forum, I didn't know whether to be irritated or to laugh. I found that laughing made it more bearable. Truth is sometimes different from person to person, so why shout why your truth is better?

in terms of IP issues -
Yeah, we have that issue at our office it isn't usually a problem - me and Eddie use different computers, different browsers and have a different posting style, but really, a lot of the time, there are people who play silly forum games with IP stuff. For some reason they get it into their heads that they can create fake shills for their products, supporters, hypers - whatever.

Sadly (or goodly I guess) it is really easy to spot most of these type of characters.

Interestingly, the worst of these have unconscious habits of word choice and typing patterns that are unique (and invisible) to them. They're like ID badges to the rest of the world, though. "Hey! Over here in the mask. It's me. I'm Jim!"

If they only had a brain...
I am well aware of my predilection of using this "..." in every post I ever make, it has been noted on one of the main forums I go to and they all know me by this for over 15 years, but since I am a moderator there anyway and one of the vilest of communist overlords there is not much they can do about it :p

I agree with your post, people have typing patterns just as unique as a blood spattered fingerprint so I am confused as to why people think we cannot notice them, or at least have a suspicion enough to investigate the ip further and see where it resoves to :p
