why the domain is not available?

I found a domain that had already been expired on March, and the owner did not renew it. But the status is "locked".

however, when I try to order it, it says: taken.

is it because of the "locked"? what does it mean?

thanks

david

Someone may have beaten you to purchasing the domain name. Between March and now quite a few weeks have passed so it very likely someone "snagged" it after it expired and the renewal "window" closed.

on the whois, it still shows the previous owner as owner, and shows the epxiration date as March 2010. No, it is not up for auction. but when I try to order it, it shows taken.

but, it is a Controversial term, maybe that's the reason? never heard this before, but who knows.

well whats the domain and we could try to figure it out for ya....and did you check the auctions...sounds exactly the way auction domains work.....they expire but the owner has them up for 3 months at auction. So they are in a limbo

What you are describing is perfectly normal. The domain will not become available for at least two months after the initial expiration. Here's why:

      http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/gtld-lifecycle.htm

Once the WHOIS information shows "Pending Delete", it will become available to register within 5 days.

If it's a good domain name, chances are it will get registered the second it's available. If you really want it, you should place a backorder at a site like SnapNames.com or NameJet.com. It'll cost you around $60 for the initial bid, but may go up if others bid.

thanks, that answered my question. now, I have to check it everyday,

I want it not because I want to build it, simply because it is a term that many people think it is a bad-word,

    maybe I should backorder it,

    thanks again

If it's a common profanity, thousands of people will be watching it. Those are very, very lucrative properties.

There is a redemption period after expiration to allow the previous owner to re-register. I don't know exactly how many days that is now. I just "reclaimed" one of my expired domains nearlt 2 weeks after the fact...
