Confused about "unlimited" hosting - please advise

Hello, I would really appreciate some advice on picking my first hosting plan. I only have a wordpress free blog that I will migrate, and grand IM plans for the future ) I researched hosts for the last two days and I decided to go with a cheap one and switch later if needed.

Ready to pull the trigger on Justhost I called in and asked various questions. I was told that yes, it is possible to get shut out for excessive usage namely posting 15 min videos on the blog etc.

I am not tech savvy but in this age I would think that videoblogging or having a sitemap plugin should not be a big deal to the point of being shut without warning.

Please advise which affordable hosting plan should I pick and how do I figure out how to not exceed the "unlimited" plan
Thank you in advance

I could be wrong, but I think that "unlimited" refers to hosting space, file transfers and the number of domains in any one account. Again, I could be wrong, but I don't think any hosting company will offer you unlimited bandwidth, which seems to be the problem with the 15 minute video.

IMHO, Bluehost is about as good as a hosting provider can get. (No, I won't be compensated in any way if you go with them. )

to clarify, I want to be able to post camtasia made videos about freehand drawing, everyday, up to 30 min each, and not have problems with usage spike. So which host?

A good solution for you would be to get an Amazon S3 account and tie it to their Cloudfront distribution so your bandwidth worries are over.

Since it will be independent of any website hosting account it won't mess with your allotments for bandwidth by the hosting company.

        It's also very affordable.

actually - there are hosting companies who can offer really 'unlimited' bandwidth - I know this as a good friend of mine did it. He did it by setting up an ISP as well, and the two together means you don't have to worry about bandwidth. I think there are a few people like that in the UK.

You mean having a port to yourself, or at least sharing it.

      But even this isn't unlimited.

A 10 Mbps port maxes out at 3.2 TB per month in full use.

      It's basic maths

      10 megabits per second = 1.25 megabytes per second * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 = 3,240,000 megabytes per month if used 24/7 (doubtful) = 3.08 TB

The 3.2 TB limit on a 10-mbps port would be in a 31-day month.

So even an "unlimited" port used 24/7 isn't unlimited.

      ----------------------------

To the OP: *nothing* in life is unlimited. Going for a cheap unlimited host will just set you up for a fall, in my humble opinion.

I think you really have to clarify that with the hosting plan of your choice. In your case you really have to look for a plan with unlimited bandwidth.

Check out Hostgator.......only about 10/mth for unlimited domains, etc etc....can't speak from experience about huge bandwidth; but their service is very good and affordable. Customer service is terrific too!

I just called hostgator and was told that if the cpu usage spikes over 25 percent they can terminate me but allegedly it's highly unlikely unless my videoblog has high traffic like 2000 visits a day. Right now i get 60 in a good day (it's the first week, no video blogging yet) on the free wordpress blog
looks like all you guys recommend them, I will wait for a few more repplies.

thanks for the 1cent coupon tip. they also have 20%off but i can't combine offers

Go to Dreamhost. It is $2 a month right now and they don't care what you do. 2000 visits a day isn't high traffic so if that is what you are capped at, forget it.

You mentioned 30 minute videos... That's way too long. Try to break them up into 3 to 5 minute chunks. You'll save on bandwidth and your surfers won't have to sit through stuff that perhaps doesn't apply to them.

Hostgator or hostmonster ... both good. You could stream the videos from Amazon S3 to eliminate the bandwidth problem.

Although many hosting companies advertise "unlimited bandwidth", if you check out their terms of service you will see there are restrictions on bandwidth!

"Unlimited" is just a sales pitch. Physically, it is impossible - so, no, there is no unlimited anything in the hosting business.

With daily 30 min videos your best bet would be, as it was suggested above, to have the videos hosted elsewhere (like amazon S3) - or some free video site (youtube, vimeo, viddler...)

it's not impossible at all and there a few hosts that offer truly unlimited bandwidth with no restrictions.

Wrong. Truly unlimited bandwidth is impossible. As I explain above, having a port to yourself is still capped.

Just in terms of mbps, and not a hard-line data limit per month.

Don't get hung up on the meaning of unlimited when you start out. If you generate *that* much traffic per day straight off, well then congratulations you are probably going to make enough to be able to afford a private server with generous limits. I'd be happy to take excessive traffic off your hands if you are really worried about your host's reaction

Unlimited certainly has loopholes. My host (Dreamhost) offers unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth on their cheap plans. And I believe them. But look at their TOS and they will shut you down for excessive CPU use and they restrict uploads of common media files. So no using the unlimited storage as a cheap backup for your MP3 collection.

That said when I had an extreme traffic spike running into the multi gigabytes (stumble-upon users loved a page of cute but large photos) Dreamhost didn't bat an eyelid.

    willoh,
You don't seem to be getting the answer you need here, imo.

Get your hosting for your website at JustHost, MidPhase, Hostgator, or wherever.

When you create your videos, don't host them yourself unless the videos are just a sales pitch.

If your videos are instructional/informative, host them at Blip.tv, Vimeo, or YouTube.

If you need to self host them, get an Amazon S3 account (there are WordPress plugins to make using S3 easier, btw). But be warned. If you get lots of people watching your video and you're not selling anything, you could end up with a fat bill and no income to cover it.

    I hope this helps.

"Unlimited" is just sales speak. In reality nothing is unlimited. The rationale of providing unlimited hosting plans came since stats showed that the majority of clients on a server rarely used even 5% of the bandwidth they purchased. Thus, hosting providers can now risk "overselling" because in reality few people ever need crazy amounts of bandwidth. They still protect themselves from the possibility of one person hogging their servers by placing a cap on the maximum system resources any one person can use (usually 10-25%). Just read their terms and conditions. Hostgator is ok though.

If you want unlimited, DON;T go with the cheapest like HostGator....

    that's all anyone ever recommends.

    Check out Site5.com

And the term "unlimited" can be taken lightly, Kim Writer explained it well.

I would look into how crowded the servers are.

don't go with host gator, or host monster. if you use more resources in hostgator they will suspend you instantly. try certified hosting, their server is tweaked for video hosting
