Your Thoughts on the Bumpers?

What are your thoughts on people that continually
bump there own posts back to the top?

I'm sure you've noticed more than a few never ending
threads where nearly all the recent posts are by the OP

Your thoughts?

    Don't know.

I'd say it's mild abuse of the forum or good marketing.
Depending on their results and how much it interferes with legitimate content.

Les, if it's a blatant bump where the op says something like, "Thanks for all
the responses, keep 'em coming" or something like that, I say yes, they
    should be deleted.

But if somebody in the thread asks the OP a question and is expecting an
answer, what is the OP supposed to do, ignore him?

At what point is an OPs reply to a thread a legit reply and at what point is
    it a bump?

Do we really want to go down this road?

Ultimately, what will end up happening is that we end up with a rule like, "No
OP may make a second post to a thread that he started."

When that happens, other members can then rip him to shreds, accuse
him of being a con artist, thief and just about anything else under the
sun and he's powerless to do anything. If he replies, the thread gets
    deleted.

Of course if the OP wants a thread to get deleted because he's made an
ass of himself, bumping it would then be the way to go and he gets what
    he wants.

As you can see, there is no clear cut answer here and I for one wouldn't
want to be the one to make the call on this.

Did you read my post Steve?
I didn't suggest people shouldn't be allowed to answer questions.

I was talking about people, that despite the thread having run it's course,
continually add comments to it, despite no one else having contributed,
to try and keep their post on the front page for weeks or even months on end.

The longer the threads go on the percentage of posts by the OP
significantly outweigh the posts of other members.

Then in that case, yes, the thread should be either killed or locked the way
they were at the old forum. I assume there is a way to lock threads here too.

I haven't noticed it being done enough to be a problem, personally.

To be honest if the thread is popular enough to keep having comments made then it should just be left to die naturally.

Surely though the Mods can tell when a thread is being used for so called spammy self promotion and they are left to make the decision whether or not to kill off

Well that's why I brought the subject up Steve.
On the old forum there were a lot more mods.
The bumpers have more of a free reign now.
Maybe we need an infraction button for bumping.

        That's just the point Ross.
The posts are being kept alive by the OP not other members.

Fair point... If the OP posts more than twice in a row with no other comments and the content is of no value then yes the thread should be locked down or deleted...

There are threads where the OP has replied 3 or 4 times
            without anyone else replying.
I'm surprised more people haven't noticed it.
Maybe I should get out more.

I'm sure it gets noticed.. Probably trying to increase their posts and get some exposure. Will backfire on their reputation I'm sure..

I just must not be paying attention. I see a few times where someone asks a question and gets no answer so they bump it once in a while and I have done that myself once or twice. But if this is a problem, then I for one have not noticed it.

But even if it is done, you can read the subject of each post so if you don't want to be bothered by it, then don't read it. Isn't that just too simple? Frankly I have way more important stuff to worry about. As I have told so many people so many times, there is only two things to worry about. And bumping threads wasn't one of them. If you are interested in knowing the only things that are worth worrying about, then I am happy to share them with you. Just ask.

              Les,

I haven't seen much of it, but I may just be missing those threads. I don't follow a big percentage of them.

I'd say it depends on the thread. Sometimes people promise updates on projects, and I don't see a problem with those if they're popular topics.

Other than that, locking seems a sensible thing to me, if people push it.
