How to pick a profitable niche in 30 seconds (without a computer)

It seems that people are always confused about how to find a niche. Personally, I was too, so I understand. There are all kinds of market research methods, but I go for energy efficiency. Here's what I do to figure out what I want to build a site on: think of hobbies.

Hobbies, by definition, are something that someone is interested enough in to spend money, with nothing expected in return more than entertainment. Why do you think golf is such a competitive niche? Now here's the trick: break it down, and go after small parts at a time. So, let's pick golf. Now list ten things you know about golf.

Putting, driving, clubs, balls, tees, shoes, golf bags, divot tools, range finder, club tags. Now pick one of the ten things that you listed, and find 30 keywords for it. Most will have very little competition.

If it's a buying keyword (i.e. 'how to get better a putting' will probably buy a 5-10 dollar ebook), put it on the left, and if it's an information keyword (how putters are made), put it on the right; so you have two lists of keywords.

Write articles for both. Or blog posts. Whatever. For the information keywords, use amazon affiliate links. For the buying keywords, try to create a quality report that you can sell, and one you can give away. The bottom of all of your articles should send people to landing page to build your list.

If you do 30 keywords a month (one a day!) and go through all ten of your sub-niches, you will have a decent sized, very strongly ranked site with good traffic. Now just monetize the list, and either expand further or pick another hobby.

Hope it helps :-)

I do agree that hobbies can make great niches to occupy, but not all of them are equally good. It's sort of like "not all rectangles are squares". The best niches are always those where you can clearly identify a strong passion or problem that desperately needs to be solved. In other words, filling an unmet need. Putting may actually be a great example of this.

Separating the "buying" hobbyist from the "info seekers" can be a really tough one. Many folks are passionate about their hobby and put up their own websites devoted to the topic. And they are more than willing to share what they have learned with other hobbyists. It isn't uncommon to find an amazing array of keywords that look absolutely fantastic with little product competition, only to learn that the product you are trying to sell into a hobby niche is completing against pre-existing giveaways.

Moral: Be sure to include non-commercial competition before diving headlong into a hobby niche.

You are making this work at home stuff way harder than it is. Ready for some sanity? Clear your head and start over.

I believe he was just using "hobby" as an example...

The method he so kindly laid out can be used to find many, many different niches and sub-niches in just about anything you can think of.

Another technique is to do what Peter Lynch did when guiding the Magellan Fund to record gains for years! His big stock picking technique? Go shopping with his wife and daughters. He'd make mental notes on the places his family were passionate about shopping at and he'd observe what stores were crowded with hungry buyers. It's this observation that led him to become one of the early investors in Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Bath and Body Works, and a host of other very successful companies.

The best and most profitable niches are the ones that
revolve around hobbies with irrational obsessions. These
involve: golfing, fishing, byking, snapling and all the stuff
people do to get away from their "day-to-day" lives and clear
    their heads.

These people are so obsessed with these activities that
they will spend any amount of money just to become better
    at it.

Nice info, It also helps if the hobby you are writing about turns out to be YOUR hobby. These would be your most profitable picks!

Another good way is collectibles... for example those little figurines that people paint that get your some serious affiliate sales, because they tend to buy many at a time. Trading cards, model cars... anything you can link to.

I agree. I have dozens of half finished projects but my music site is the only one that got anywhere. Its because its the only thing I work where I dont wish I was doing something else.

That's a very good point, it is much easier to create a site with a few hundred articles if it's something that you are interested in. Plus, if you spend money on something, other people probably do too.

Very good way to look at finding a profitable niche. Even the experienced will learn from this. One person can't think of absolutely every method.

Sometimes we make picking a niche harder than it has to be.

Thanks a lot for the method.
