New to IM Want to Start From Scratch Advice Needed

Hello all,

First of all let me introduce myself. My forum name is ShipGeek. Yes, I love ships. All kinds of ships from smaller to bigger, cargo ships and all that sails. My most favourites are historic cruise liners.

I am about retirement age. I will end up with a small pension. I want to learn Internet Marketing, first to make an extra living and then make it a new career and hopefully some good money.

I am totally fluent in several languages. I can hit international markets. I have already got ideas as to what niches I would like to work in.

I need to learn how to build websites/blogs, article writing, how to do squeeze pages, autoresponders, SEO, google ranking... I mean that and everything else so I can become successful.

I don't want pre-packaged stuff. I am looking at classes. School. Learning from scratch, step by step instructions. I am not a computer geek (no... I am a ship geek) although I can easily get by with quite a bit of stuff.

I am sure there is everything here so I can learn without having to spend money except for hosting, autoresponders and all that is absolutely necessary. I want to make money, not spend money.

Will look forward to your comments and advice. Thank you very much in advance.

I'd suggest you go down the WordPress route wordpress.com. Most hosting companies will have it as standard and it's extremely easy to get advice when you get stuck. Haven't looked but I'm pretty sure there will be tutorials on you tube, or clear installation instruction found via Google.

Forget school, it'll slow you down. Keep reading forums like these, find what you need free on Google. Pay nothing for anything other than your domain and hosting and learn as you go.

Guessing your content is ship related. Always better to stick with subjects you are knowledgeable about, and even better if you have a love for - it helps keep your motivation up!

Thank you all very much for your answers.

The QE2... Such a wonderful ocean liner. There were no two like her. It is so sad to see her sitting idle in Dubai... anyway let's get back to topic!

I don't want to spend money on pre-packaged programs, no way. I am sure everything is available for free. There are so much resources to be found on the internet about absolutely everything so there must be lots to find about learning IM too I am sure.

The 30 days challenge seems to be a good start. I will have to look at the link and see what it's all about.

      Thank you again.

He was also on the I and the Queen Mary... I saw the Victoria a few weeks back when it was parked up on our little island. Very impressive.

Back to business Best by far to get on with it and learn as you go. You didn't say what field you were aiming at? Is it ships? I'd imagine there are some good affiliate commissions to be made from cruise and travel companies if you can get the right site visitors.

    Hi ShipGeek,

I like Submarines. Those surface ships can sink, ya know? You are in a good position, with your skills, to do it quickly, easily and without much effort. Do what?

Have success as an Internet Marketer. HOWEVER, I see some potential navigational hazards, some nasty currents, hidden rocks and sandbars you could crash into.

Just MY opinion, but I believe you will be wasting a lot of time to learn all those things listed, why not do that WHILE you are building your Internet Marketing business?

I'm going to include a link, so you can download a report I wrote called, Before You Buy Anything. Please read it, it's quick. And pay attention to the 'ESCALATOR' of information products, and I'll show you how to get started quickly, using what you know and LOVE, to get out of the gate fast. OK?

Here is the link to the report: http://www.angelfire.com/biz/gjbiz/byba2010a.pdf

Feel free to contact me via email at gjabiz@yahoo.com

I have a reasonably detailed guide to get started with learning - the "school way" here. I do hope you find it useful.

I can take you through the process of doing one simple squeeze page website from scratch - beginning to end, and interactively. Please feel free to send me a PM. For whatever it's worth, this won't cost you anything!

Thank you for your offer. As I said in my very first post I have limited financial means and am not looking to buy any turnkey/ready made products. Thank you anyway.

The "school way" link looks like it has got some very good resources. Thank you.

Hey, how about looking at free courses online?

Join the lists of the big names online like Frank Kern ,John Reese, Ewen Chia, Mike Filsaime, and from time to time they give out free stuff (of course to market stuff), but I have learnt ALOT from free info they gave out.

Granted, these guys will try to market their wares to you, but you can actually learn from their marketing too!

Hmm, just get your feet wet, look around at what others are doing, and then try it. You don't have to spend money if you don't wish to... Drop me a PM if you want a free course for a headstart (i don't want to unnecessarily post links here)

P.s. I'll not make any money when you PM me for the freebie.

Cheers, and best of luck to you!

    A few points....

    1. This business is harder than it looks. The low bar of entry is very deceiving.

    2. Beware of the "Make money online!" people regardless of how professional or convincing they sound. Realize that the biggest name of them all has been fined by the Federal Trade Commission close to $1 Million. This very gullible industry has an odd desire to trust these guys.

    3. For every person that makes it, there are literally hundreds who will remain perpetual newbies because they chose to tread water instead of putting the hard work into moving forward.

    4. Diversity. Diversify. Diversify.

    5. Just go with your gut feeling regardless of what you read, but be smart about it.

I would recommend starting with article marketing first for 2 key reasons..

    1) You can find tons of free article marketing info (bummarketing etc) on the internet
    2) It's free and all your need is time and a simple lander (blogspot/squidoo etc)
    3) It helps you get your basics right. Once you grasp the technique of listing article after article on they keyword you want on Google, it'll help you understand what type of keywords work and would probably help alot when you go into paid search marketing.

    Good luck!

Article marketing is a great way to start indeed, especially if you can speak several languages. It's also the easiest way to go if you lack technical skills.

The 1 principle that constantly was in my head for years. BUILD, BUILD, BUILD. Websites, build links, lists, whatever... just BUILD! Constantly be learning and DON'T give up, anything that you BUILD will be there getting traffic forever!

Maybe I took the long route, whatever... All roads lead to the same place

    Hi ShipGeek,

The very best advice that I can give you is to not to try and do everything starting out. You will find success much faster if you pick a specific segment of Internet Marketing and focus in on it like a laser.

All too often people try to learn too many things and get overwhelmed and give up. If I had it to do all over again I would start with list building because that is an asset that will pay you over and over again...

    Best of luck to you!

It depends on your objectives... I personally learned SEO from the inside out because I know it's going to be very valuable knowledge in the future.

I admit that it took me 2 years to "Quit my job" .. But the knowledge I gained was worth every night I stayed up until 5AM working.

Now my business is outsourced and expanding every single day, and THAT is what I want to see happen to other people.

    Hello,
There are many ways to build websites as you say. The easiest way are CMS or Content management Systems.

As someone mentioned above wordpress is fairly versitile and can be use to make squeeze pages as well as sales pages. however it was actually meant for blogs so there are limitations.

If you choose to go the html route which is a lot more harder I would recommend only using it for squeeze pages or sales pages since you don't need to deal with too much stuff. But it's actually really easy once you have a designer help you design the template. However hte key is using a good html editor and not the basic wordpad since it can be really hard and confusing. Personally I use coffeecup which is free and it's quite good. After that the only key thing oyu need to remember is <br> to separate lines. From there you can just basically write in your content to the design.

As for autoresponder many scripts aren't very good as some don't get delivered and are often considered as spam. This route would better to go with a service like Aweber. It is currently the norm in the industry since it allows affiliate links for internet marketers and has a high delivery rate of a supposedly reported 99.34%! The price isn't cheap though I have to warn you however you get the first 30 days for $1 which can give you a chance to kick start.

But just a warning don't sign up until you've learn what you need and ready to start so you aren't wasting your time.

Another important thing is building a email list as those are highly valued and can bring in a lot of profit.

If you have any questions I'll try my best to help. I don't consider myself a pro or experienced in anyway but I've learn a lot from browsing forums, and reading and I'll be more than happy to help and answer any questions.

      Thank you everybody!

I have signed up for the 30DC. Just this alone seems to be plenty of work so I am going to try it and see where it gets me to.

I have been sent an email with a whole list of things to do and things to look at.

I am one who gets easily distracted so I hope I can stick to it without wasting internet time on other things.

    Yo Ship Geek,

Now that you've decided on the 30DC you need to focus 100% on it. One of the most difficult things to do in Internet marketing is maintaining focus. If you continue to search for free ways to learn Internet marketing you will get caught in the marketer's trap. The pros know that newbies will get tired, overwhelmed and confused by the enormous amount of free information out there. Then the newbies will start buying products and get caught in the vicious cycle of buying and learning, but not doing.

Learn and focus on the basics:

    • How to choose a product to promote
    • How to build a website/blog with WordPress
    • How to drive traffic to the site
    • How to convert that traffic into $$$

    John P

P.S. Also, be careful with free stuff, sure you can find everything on the Internet for free, but it may take you weeks or longer to learn what you could learn in 2 hours with some good training.
