Smart Enough to Be Lucky

Another Warrior posted a promo video in another thread. One line from that video stood out, mainly because I use it all the time. He was talking about a boy that was "smart enough to be lucky".

I have friends that tell me that I am lucky because I can travel when I want. I am lucky because I can spend time with my kids. I am lucky because I make good money. My own mother is guilty of saying these things too.

I'm willing to bet that a lot of you look at the "gurus" and think that they are lucky too.

Maybe I am lucky. Maybe the gurus are too. But one thing is for certain, I did not go buy a rabbit's foot to get lucky. I worked my ass off for the last ten years so that things would eventually fall into place... and luckily, they did.

I played poker for a living at one point in my life and poker is just like business... you create your own luck by learning where the opportunities are located and how to get there. You don't learn these things by being lucky. you learn them from studying hard and working hard.

So, I say to all of you... before you call somebody lucky, you should realize that this person is most likely "smart enough to be lucky" and with a lot of effort, you can be too.

    This is spot on!

The reason that I had a look at this post is because of the thread title - awesome way to put it!

I am always telling people "you make your own luck" and I can agree totally with what you have said above.

People never see the blood, sweat and tears and it is so EASY to say "Well, they are just lucky!".

The first route to success in my opinion - No excuses! Take the headguard off and take the blows full contact at least that way you learn to move out the way!

    Awesome post!

My dad told me a story about Lee Trevino (a pro golfer)...

Once, after making a great shot, someone commented,
"Wow, lucky shot!" Lee replied, "Yeah, and the more I
      practice, the luckier I get."

I think that is true with most successes in life

I heard that same quote at the poker tables all the time. Great quote.

Lee Trevino was struck by lightning during a tournament in Chicago in 1975 and when asked what to do if lightning strikes while you're out on the course playing he replied, "In case of a thunderstorm, stand in the middle of the fairway and hold up a one iron. Not even God can hit a one iron."

        You gotta love Lee...

          That's funny! I never could use a 1-iron even when I golfed

I agree to the fullest. People think they'll suddenly encounter luck without putting any effort. Yes its true for a lottery ticket, or a $1000 bill on the road etc but for your desired goal, you need to work hard.

That's a great post! I am going to bookmark this one.
My uncle used to tell me, you can't succeed with out
failing. One of my favorite quotes is from Theodore Roosevelt "It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed."

    I agree with you 100%

    Best Regards,

That is what I believe. I believe in making your own luck. The problem with a lot of people is that they expect other people or other things in life to be responsible for what they are unwilling to be responsible for.

They often look at another person's success or "luck" and think and or assume that everything was just "handed" to him. They neglect the possibility that that person has worked long and hard to get where he is.

Yes, working hard does not always guarantee success. Taking the right opportunity plays a big part in success as well.

If you can exercise the wisdom to take an opportunity that will work for you, then you will find yourself successful as well.

Don't work hard anymore than you work smart.
