I made it to the frontpage of a local newspaper :)

Yeah!

Just couldn't hold my excitement after I became the headline news for Apple Daily. Basically, they interviewed me about my success with the internet and also a bit about my upcoming book. I was expecting to get featured in a tiny section of the paper (you know, the bits where nobody reads), until I found out this morning they put me on the frontpage.

For those of you who don't live in Hong Kong, Apple Daily is one of the biggest local newspapers here (in fact the second best-selling newspaper in HK according to Nielson), so I guess that's what you call exposure and publicity i.e. "offline marketing". For those of you who do live in Hong Kong, make sure you read today's copy of Apple Daily lol

Just a shame that it's a Chinese newspaper...

Stanley

EDIT (at 9:30am): Just checked my website stats. It shows 3067 unique visitors in the past 5 hours.

ANOTHER EDIT (at 10:50am): Now at 4597... crazy 1500 unique visitors in just the past hour or so. But conversion rates? 11 optins. Let's see the conversion rate... 0.23%. I guess newspaper traffic is just like social media traffic (digg, SU) - they are untargeted, crap, don't convert.

ANOTHER UPDATE (1:22pm) 7100 unique vistors. Received TONS of emails from readers congratulating me as well as interview requests (and speaking engagements??) from a few well-known publications in the area. 18 optins so far. I guess there's something more to than just conversion rates...

ANOTHER UPDATE (9:30pm) Now at 11200 visits. Tons of buzz going around on chinese forums... mostly negative. But hey, it's still press Posted a full case study review:

http://www.emillionsblog.com/how-abo...news-coverage/

ANOTHER UPDATE (12pm the next day) - At 12,000 visits. Featured on Sing Tao newspaper today. Website crashed.

UPDATE (2pm) - 14200 visits. Website back up woot!

It should open all of our eyes that 'Offline Marketing' is a huge potential that not many IM'ers take full advantage of... it sure makes me think of how to tap into the 'offline marketing' market.

Traffic from offline media can be strange.

To make a newspaper/website tie in work it really needs to be tied in both ways:

      # 1: Your website mentions the news story with a picture of the paper and offers a special deal for readers.

      # 2: The special deal or gift is offered in the newspaper.

It helps a lot if you think through what would appeal to the newspaper readers (obviously)!

I found with radio it was a total waste of time sending people from radio to a website.

But you could clean up sending them to a phone number.

I suggest you buy as many copies of the newspaper as you can.

You can leverage the credibility of that newspaper story in many different ways in the future.

      Kindest regards,

Exactly. I had a client who was quoted in the business section of the New York Times because of a press release I wrote for him. When I went back to his web site a month later, nowhere did he mention this coup! I reminded him that it was vital to put this on his home page, something like "As featured in The New York Times."

People who are looking at the number of conversions as a result of a great media mention like this are missing the point. The point is credibility. In fact, you cannot buy this kind of credibility at any price. This makes Stanley seem legitimate and important in a way that few other credentials can. And if he uses this credibility boost correctly, he should have a whole lot more opportunities than he would otherwise.

Rightly or wrongly, people assume that someone who has had major media coverage is smarter or better at what they do than others who are not in the limelight.

About opportunities... I would say that of all the things that have happened because of media publicity I have received, the best is being presented with interesting opportunities almost from left field, that I would not otherwise have had. For example, because of one appearance in the Sunday Boston Globe I had an opportunity to create a pilot for a PBS television show.

      Bravo and good luck, Stanley!

I have absolutely no idea. It's a newspaper so I dont think anybody actually "subcsribes" to them. Just picks up a copy at a convenient store on their way to work or something. So far, the online version at appledaily.com alone has raked in almost 200,000 hits.

Sorry I meant "distribution" not subscribers...

Most newspapers are pretty open to how much they print on a daily basis and are also willing to share how much monthly traffic they get. Especially if you're a potential advertiser.

    Thanks again,

Which is why the reporter got many of the facts wrong in the article.

Absolutely. Ever since they published that article, I've got TONS of requests from many other magazines and publications all requesting an interview proposal. Already made some great connections. Will certainly put "As Featured In AppleDaily"

For this particular journalist, it was referred to through my dad. But for some of the other ones, journalists took the initiative to contact me. So you really just have to get that one publication and it will turn into a snowball effect. Just be initiative and contact those journalists yourself if you can't get them to contact you.
