Contributors required for new site - What's the right approach?

Ok, I've written and re-written this post about a dozen times, but can't figure out the right way to write it.

Here's the situation.

I've started planning a new tutorial site aimed at beginners to intermediates - showing them about coding and design for web sites (not necessarily sales pages) and here's the thing:

I recently saw a training page by Eben Pagan (I can't spell, but you know who I mean) and he spoke about writing newsletters - and getting others to write articles in exchange for advertising space and links.

Question is, how do I approach people to do this? Obviously, until the site is profitable, there would be no 'pay' for it, other than free advertising and links etc, but is that enough to get people to write a short 'column'?

Let me know what you think in reply or PM me,

Cheers,

Newbim.

Interesting, well remember that you are offering something, exposure, advertising and links, it is valuable.

so I suspect you may find many volunteers, just wait and see how this thread turns out,

In this case, your going to get no one, and if you get someone they won't be reliable or help you out in a positive way, who knows, maybe my above negativity will spark someone to help you out, but the bottom line is Eben is really discussing leverage here.

Leveraging your traffic on your site to increase the value of your site by bartering writing for advertising.

However, you are just starting a site, you have no traffic to leverage.

Now, what I usually do when I have no leverage is create some. Write the original content yourself, then get yourself positioned in Google, now you have leverage as a rank, web content writers can claim the glory of their content being on the first page of google, you'll have more content for your site, it will increase and stay in the top positions with the consistent updates... etc, etc

Point being, you can't trade value with nothing, you have to create something of equal value...

I think if the site's band new then you'll find you probably need to actually pay for the content at first, if not create it yourself.

As LMC said, what Eben is saying is about leverage, so once you've got some traffic to your site, then yes, you can probably get people to provide content in exchange for exposure.

But until then I think you'll find that you'd be better off just paying to get some content created.

Newbim, that particular market is incredibly competitive and well-served already. I would strongly suggest you tighten up your target market. For instance, intermediate PHP/database programmers or intermediate Joomla users.

If you insist on sticking with the beginner market, the only way to get free contributors is to create a site so compelling people want to go there. I know, chicken and egg, but put yourself in a novice's position. What does your site offer that something like w3school doesn't? Nonetheless here are a few suggestions.

    * Get PLR articles and rewrite them
    * Outsource the article writing. You can get good articles for $5-$10
    * Combine those approaches and hire a good writer to fix up the PLR
    * Most important, create a high-quality ebook and give it away to build your list

The last approach works astoundingly well for me.

    Cheers,
