Ok so my question is...say someone was in the health and beauty niche (*cough*cough*)

Should this person build a single big list related around health and beauty in general like (health and beauty tips) or should they build a single list centered solely around the particular health and beauty product they are currently promoting.

Such as, a haircare list, nailcare list, skincare list, etc. etc.

Which is wiser?

Thanks

  • It really depends. What is your business plan, what kind of products do you plan on marketing to them, etc, etc? If you plan on having custom products for each niche, probably the microniches are better. If you don't want to manage that, but want an easier all-purpose health/beauty site, then one list would be good/better.

i say break it down. someone that opts in for beautiful hair tips might not be interested in beauty fat toe tips

I usually build the master niche and let click behavior segregate the list over time. I'd rather know what to send them based on their behavior as opposed to my own thoughts about organization.

So I'll have a real estate, business, self help etc etc. Then I will send niche related content in sequences. Get a baseline of responsiveness and send cross niche offers in a broadcast to compare click behavior.

This lets me know if someone in the business niche might also like a promotion from the real estate niche as a example.

Break it down ... mainly because you can target your promotions to their market very easily.

So you emailling the haircare niche about a haircare product. They'll be better conversions and there is always the risk you might annoy some who didn't want irrelevant information (although I think your niche has a big lap).

Plus you can test different emails against different lists to see what converts and sells better. Write two emails ... send them to two segments and see how they work. Which headline gets more open rates, more clicks etc.

    Good luck!

It's always better to build a targeted list, i.e. hair care folks interested in hair care stuff. If your list is too generic, everytime you email them a product promotion, you'll end up with a bunch of people leaving your list.
Not good. You want to be the "expert" in their eyes, not a Jack of all trades.

    Just my two cents worth.

I think it's better to be as specific as possible for every list. The more targeted your communications are, the better your chance of a positive response.

I'd say the wisest choice would be
Build separate lists of highly targeted niche lists.

That's what I'd do if I were in the health and beauty niche.

I'd split the lists up but if you wanted to do a general promotion you can do a broadcast to all the lists at one time or if somethings more targeted you can just pick that certain list

Thank you to everyone who posted I'll take the majority of the advice which was to narrow it down/organize/and test.

I kinda figured those were the responses I'd get..but I wanted to be 100% sure before I embarked on something I couldn't take back easily.

    Thanks again!
