NVU Html Editor

Yes it's decent, just know it "can" jack up php or other code...but overall it's a nice easy to use wysiwyg html editor.... kompozer.net is where the latest distro exists from what I know

NVU or now Kompozer is good.

The video needs to be embedded into html code. If you simply want to include say a You tube video the code they give you is already in the right format. Just copy and paste but make sure you copy into "source" view.

If you are still strugglin google video embed code or basic html training -there is plenty of free resource around to help.

If you are looking at learning how to make webpages you should seriously consider learning wordpress rather than start from scratch on html.

I use and teach the use of Nvu (now Kompozer) in my daily Adsense site building and coaching classes. Unless you need advanced features, there's no reason to lay out a bunch of money for Dreamweaver or Frontpage or any of those other paid HTML editors.

Depending on the source for the video you want to display on your web page, there should be what's called an "embed code" provided by the video storage site. YouTube shows you just below the video. Same for sites like Viddler. If you shoot your own videos, there is usually a service attached to the video creation software you buy. For example, with Camtasia (or Jing, which is Camtasia Light), videos can be uploaded to a service called Screencast (.com). From there you can either direct visitors to a special URL to show the video right from the Screencast site, or use a special embed code to paste into your web page wherever you want the video to play on your own site or blog. In all cases, it's really just a question of picking a spot, pasting in that code, and making sure after you save and upload your web page that the video displays and plays correctly.

Depends if you have the video or you just need to embed the code.

if it's embedding the code just place the cursor where you want the text to go "Insert" choose HTML (probably) and paste the code.

If it's a file that you have just link to it and upload it. The easiest way to use NVU/Kompozer is to create a separate folder and save everything in it your webpages, images, video files, audio files, etc., then it's just point and click, and when you're done upload it (files not the folder).

To add the a video just open the page in NVU highlight your text or image and click the link icon or right click on the highlighted text, and browse to video file (folder icon) and select it, as long as it's in the same folder or sub-folder it's a point and click environment. If you don't see the file select "All Files" from the drop down menu.

Don't try to use the built in FTP as it tends to be buggy. There are plenty of free ftp programs that you can use, I use Filezilla. Or you can even use your cpanel.

Yes I actually use the program. You can search for tutorials via youtube.com

I use NVU often to create landing pages and facebook FBML pages. Works great...

If you "store" your video files at someplace like screencast (dot) com, or viddler dot com, they give you the code to embed that will make your video play on your website.

Screencast is by Techsmith - the same people who make Camtasia. At the screencast site the have a free membership, so you can test it for yourself. The only limitation for the free version is your video must be limited to less than 2 gigs, and you are allowed 2 gigs of monthly bandwidth. For more it is only $10 per month up to half a terabyte per month.

You make a folder in screencast to hold your videos. You upload your video (there is an upload button at screencast), you click on the little share icon near the video file, and screencast gives you the code to embed at your site. Copy it to your clipboard.

In Kompozer, you would go to code view mode (instead of design mode), paste in the code and save. You need to leave enough space on your website to allow for whatever size (resolution) video you have. Screencast will place a video viewer on your site, and visitors can watch the video.

BTW The difference between Nvu and Kompozer is Nvu would often lock up your computer. That bug was repaired in Kompozer.

I've used Nvu in the past, but I found that it automatically "cleans up" your code. That is, if you write HTML, it will check it against W3C's Validator and make changes accordingly.
I use SciTE (also free) now. It is a fairly lightweight editor that can have multiple files open in separate tabs, and can display formatting for several different languages. PHP, HTML, Java, you name it!

Nvu is a pretty descent piece of free software. Although at times it does mess up the code but its still a good website building software to use.

How does Kompozer (formerly nvu) compare to XsitePro. I know XsitePro costs about $100 but is it worth the spend?

OK nvu is XLent, for free product, but I prefer Dream weaver, even if it is expensive. Flash is the reason. Those two work great and then some. Still, if you are on a budget use nvu. I believe KompoZer has much better css. It is similar to the old micro soft front page.
