Real Name vs Pen Name?

Is there a general consensus on whether you should use your real name or a pen name? I created a pen name for the website and have written all of our articles under that name. But now I'm starting to feel strange about that, especially when venturing into the social media sphere, putting up pictures of my alter-ego, etc.

Thoughts?

Cheers,

Jake

I used pen name, choose a good and easy memories pen name for yourself. but make sure your name and your pen name does not have a big difference! for example a's name is christopher tang, but the pen name is jerry tang.

I'm willing to share my real first name, but I don't feel comfortable sharing my real last name. For nothing else, I may wish to enter the corporate world again later and don't want future employees knowing about all of my online ventures. To be honest, I don't think your potential members / customers will care too much about your last name assuming your reputation is strong with the pen name.

Also, I tend to keep my personal and professional life separate. I currently own a blog that is very geographically specific (Shanghai). I don't want people who I socialize with to necessarily know that a site they may be visiting is from me.

My photo can be shared, but I keep it a bit blurry so those who meet me in real life likely won't make an instant connection.

      Hey Jake,

When using social media, I would strongly suggest no pen name. Social media is meant to "brand" your REAL self, not a ficticious one.

Pen names are used for article writing and micro niche sales pages only from what I have studied over the years.

Awesome and unbelievably responsive advice! Thanks. That all kind of jibes with what I was feeling, just wanted to get the thoughts of "those who have gone before".

        Cheers,

I agree with Hermione, but she has the unfair advantage of majical spells.

I use my name, but I totally agree with Alexa, I regret using my real name on a long standing popular niche, cause it just seems weird that I'm also noted for the IM niche. But too late now.

One thing though. Please please please, come up with something better than the people who try to post on my blogs and forums..... I mean, regardless of how good your comment is, I just hesitate to approve it when it's from "viagraforcheap_man". lol (true story).

I use my own name here and in a couple of other forums and for my writing business (and that makes it easier to get paid), and a different pen-name in every niche for which I have an affiliate marketing site, because I don't particularly want people to know that the "Alexa Smith" who runs an authority site on cauliflower soup recipes is the same "Alexa Smith" who runs an authority site on distance learning welding/engineering qualifications (I think either might just detract a little from my credibility in the other). For me, that's not "material" in the sense that my views on cauliflower soup aren't any different because they're written under the name of Hermione Chou-Fleur, say.

      Others will disagree. As ever.
I see your point Alexa and agree.

Both are fine actually. For IM niches, I'm using my real name but for other niches, I'm using other pen names.

The best thing you could do to a pen name is eventually make them so real and successful that it is really like a real person.

I use my real name... I'm not scared and confused...

    How about this then.

Is Matt Cutts, really Matt Cutts? Is Bill Gates, really Bill Gates?

Really, I don't think it matters...

No need to feel guilty. From what I've found most people in IM use different names. I know it felt odd for me at first when I was setting up different niches, but I tend to use a different one for each niche.

My personal opinion is that you should use your REAL NAME in YOUR niche. If you plan to move into lots of different niches, I would probably use a different pen name for each..but, regardless, MY niche would be given the privilege of having my real name. It creates a vital transparency essential for business.

Like for me, my niche(s) would be internet marketing and web development. I wouldn't dream of using a pen name in these niches.

    Just my 2 pennies.

Personal branding and your name works best in some niches.

Obviously if your cross-selling in other markets you use a pen-name.

As Alexa said, people put you in a box and can't relate to your leadership in different niches.

I use both pen names (yes, names, plural) and my own name. All depends on what you are doing.

Branding purposes require your own name. 'specially if your recognizable picture is available. You can't hide behind giant sunglasses or a book when you really do want people to know who you are (and of course, just how good your stuff is.)

When the personal credit isn't necessary, use a pen name. As Alexa said, cauliflower soup and her other examples don't mix well.

While you can personally do a bang-up job on many very different topics and various pursuits, sometimes it really isn't the wisest thing to do. Other people's opinions will differ, so why run the risk?

When I first started marketing I used nickname as I did not realise the importance of branding onself. Now I only use my real name, because it is important that people know who you are, where you come from and what you are about. There is an amazing amount of information that is searchable online, now if you you have skeletons in your cupboard, they will be found.
Now I know some people like to adopt pen names that they attach to different areas of their business where they purport to be be experts, because they feel they cannot be experts in multiple subjects.
I have knowledge and expertise in a number of different backed up with certificates and accreditation all in my own name and I would never think of using a pen name, some how its seems a little dishonest.

You do of course have film stars and some authors who do not use their real names but these are exceptions rather than the rule

Tande, why do you use a pet name when writing articles you should always be marketing yourself, if there was any place where someone is more likely to use a pet name it would be in the social media

I use name name for most forums (not this one, decided to use real after i had joined) and things related to my free guides. But if i am using articles to backlink i tend to use a very unusual name so i can track the articles when they are indexed more easily.
