I don't write for a living but I wonder, is it boring? I mean it seems to me you would get requests for the same content over and over. Another article about link building... yay!

It depends. If you write on a subject you are very familiar with, it can be fun.

Writing about travel and photography never gets boring to me.

It's nothing to do with not enjoying it, I have made my entire living for the past four years as a writer, I write every day, five days a week. The money is good, no problem there, but anything you do every day as a job of work is bound to be boring at times, it's a case of taking the rough with the smooth. Some days it's fun, other days its OK, and then there are those rare days when I really would rather be doing something else, but have a deadline approaching which means I am chained to the laptop.

Really? Try a 5000 word essay on "The effects of the Recession upon German Corporate Governance". I had to do that last week, I assure you ideas were not popping into my head

When you're writing about something you're passionate
about to an audience that rewards you with feedback-than
    writing is fun.

However, if you're doing it for the sake of let's say traffic,
    it kills the fun.

So, at the end of the day writing is as fun as you make it to be

Scott, it's all in how you look at it.

If you view writing the way you mentioned above (Another linkbuilding article? Yay!) then yes, it can get boring. Fast.

However, if you are always challenging yourself to do something new, something different in your writing while delivering what could be viewed as the same basic content, writing becomes an adventure, a challenge.

To combat boredom and possible burnout, a writer could take a piece of content and write it in a different "voice", write it from an opposite point of view, approach it from a different angle. Write it for an unusual audience rather than the one most intended.

    Here's a silly little example:

Let's say you wanted an article on listbuilding. You could ask 10 people to write one article on the same subject. Or you could have one writer create the article, but have them create it 10 times, one each from the points of view of: an alien, Jesus, Bill Gates, Norma Jean homemaker, the President, etc...

There's no telling what you'd get back, but just as in the first example, you'd be sure to get a variety of content, all on the same subject matter.

Anyway, I like to write, so maybe it "is" boring for most people. But some of us come up with ways to make "boring" writing fun.

Writing is boring. That's why so many writers have to stay motivated in order to write blogs and articles every other day. I personally dread writing. But on the flip side it is healthy to put your thoughts on paper.

Tina nailed it. It's only boring if you spew out a constant stream of near-identical garbage (as the case might be for human spinners).

Good writers turn every piece into a challenge.

    Think of it like running...

If you ran the same 2 mile stretch of road every day at the same time, it would be boring as heck. Maybe you'd eventually give up running.

But most runners don't do that. They run different trails. They run different speeds. They run at different times. Sometimes they just toss out the idea of running and cover the distance by biking it instead. And sometimes they stay indoors and do the treadmill thing.

In other words, runners don't get bored as long as they mix it up.

Likewise, good writers don't get bored either... as long as they keep it fresh.

    Cheers,
    Becky

I'll third Becky and Tina's thoughts on the matter.

Covering the same topics in the same way over and over is boring, but so is writing the same word over and over on a blackboard; that's why some teachers used it as a punishment. :p

If you love to write, it isn't often that you are totally bored.

Some days, I'm distracted by sunshine outside; others, I want to get back to playing video games. Then I'm bored. But once I push myself and I actually start writing, I'm falling in love with English all over again.

I don't often get the exact same request multiple times, and even if I did, it would probably be something so vague (ie "weight loss" or "dating") that I could very easily write totally different things for each client and stay interested.

The Answer to the OP is "NO, NO, NO" and again "NO"

      1. Everytime I write I earn money. Some of it now. Some of it as a residual income. That makes it exciting.
      2. I love to write. It comes easy to me. (Easily??? to me)
      3. I have 100,000's people reading my stuff every month. That is amazing.
      4. I actually met my old "A" level english teacher last month. She was almost in tears when I told her what I do.

If you write about something you love and you are interested shouln't be so boring...

I always choose a niche which I am interested in...so I don't have any problem with that...

Writing for me, in general, has never been boring. Sure, some days I don't
feel like writing and I don't. But for the most part, when I decide to write
something, I put my whole self into it...whether it is for me or for a
      customer.

The reason I got out of freelancing wasn't about the boredom. It was
about realizing that I could make more money writing for myself as a
      marketer.

But I could get very excited about writing for somebody, whatever it is,
      if the money is right.

Sound mercenary? Maybe, but it's the only reason I would write for
somebody else and let them put their name on my work.

When you feel that passionate about your writing, that's when you know
it's something you will most likely never tire of.

I don't fully agree. I never take on jobs for a topic I have NO interest in. However, there are some times when the topic I'm writing on is not fascinating or exciting and I might become a bit bored.

So what? If I'm well paid for the work, that can offset a bit of boredom here and there.

Hardest part for me is getting started on a new project - once I get on with it, I usually don't give a thought to boredom or excitement or anything except doing a good job and getting it done.

If it were boring I would never have decided to be a Journalist and now a freelance writer. I actually enjoy it. It tends to be a stress reliever; only of course if I am writing my own stuff. Writing is an art that not many people possess. This is true whether you write your own things, you write informative things, current events, creative writing and so on.

As a writer you have to know how to find a balance and how to renovate your writing so that you do not get bored, fed up or tired. Sure, we are human too, and there are times when we simply aren't in the mood or the muse isn't there. When I write for clients it can get monotonous if I let it. I tend to just let the words flow. And if I am not in the mood to write I just won't!

I would think robbing a bank would be much more exciting and exhilerating than churning out SEO articles, too! Except the penalty if you got caught, well, not so much : ).

But the truth is, article writing can be boring or interesting, depending on how you think of it. Of course, if you already hate reading and writing period, I don't think boring would be the word. Down right awful would be more like it.

I wonder, if you are not doing it for a living now, are you thinking of it? Is that why you ask? Or did you just want to get the conversation party started .

Great question! As a beginner in IM, it has become apparent to me you must love writing to succeed in it. Almost every aspect of IM involves bucket loads of writing.

This is at the center of so many questions from newbies about finding niches they like and so, perhaps, what they are really saying is - "I hate writing, don't make me write about the best products to be used in household cleaning" or something like that.

So I guess I am saying if it is boring, that seems to be a real issue in IM.

      Great thread Scott

At times, yes - article writing can be boring. While I wish every project was new and exciting and fun and different, the fact is that a lot of people operate in the same niches, which means lots of writing on the same niches. I have written so many "saving money" and "weight loss" articles that I could basically crap them out in my sleep.

Of course, things like writing reports for products I'm launching are much more fun, but those darn articles still pay a big chunk of the bills...

The act of writing itself is not boring. The topics on the other hand...

The thing is that "boring" is really subjective. I'm never bored when I'm actually writing but sometimes I do get tired of writing about the same topics and using the same keywords over and over again. Those days I feel more like an assembly line than a real writer. Conversely, there are days when those same topics that frustrated me yesterday are suddenly the most fun things to write about ever because of something new that I've read or learned about.

No, it's never boring. I'm eternally inquisitive anyway, so I find the research interesting. I enjoy trying to find ways to word things that make sure everyone can understand the principle behind whatever topic I'm working with that day.

Of course, writing isn't for everyone. Even I have days where I start to think "oh, no! Not this topic again!" - and then I promptly remind myself that writing about that topic again is FAR more preferable than going back to my boring bank job. That thought usually keeps me writing happily for days on end

I think it depends on whether or not you like writing. People who enjoy writing tend to not find it boring, even if they write on the same topics whereas people who just don't like to write find it boring.

I have a client that I've had to write numerous articles for on the same subject and although I don't find it boring, sometimes I find I have to clear my mind because you may want to think on the same track as you did for the last article...but boring, not so much.

If I had to get up every day knowing I had to write 10 articles on the same subject, or a 60 articles by the end of the week..yeh, I think I'd get bored *very* quickly.

Of course, the question is entirely subjective as it depends on the interests of the person answering it, and how easily bored they are.

I would be bored after 1 sentence of an article on biochemistry, whereas I'm sure a few would be excited to see this article unravel in front of them.

I wouldn't say that I "enjoy" writing but do enjoy seeing the
final product. The conception and pregnancy is no fun
but the baby is so delightful.

There is nothing better than writing that last paragraph, editing the work, and knowing that it's freakin' awesome. Getting started writing, on the other hand...

I realy love the writing, the hard thing is to find the start and the thred to follow it.
But when you have found that is start to be easy.
It can take me days to find out the content text and layout even when i know what to promote.
Do not sitt at the keybord and try to figure out what to wright, you can force out something that does not sound so good in the end.
Give it some time to grove in your mind and you will se it will work, i do not wonder what people want to read.
See to your self, what do you want to find out or know from this article.
You can find the best articles only by looking att your self and some imagination.

Writing is like taking a shower. I have to do it every day! One of the things that was helpful to me was to imagine sitting in a cocktail lounge with a stranger from another planet after two Martini's and trying to explain Politics to him.

Now, that is what I call conversational style.

I love to write, but I haven't done that much of it. Just this year, I started forcing myself to sit down once per day and write something. As a result, I am getting to the point that I call my writing 'productive,' meaning I can finish a full page in an hour or less.

Would I want to do it for a living? That depends. Writing articles or books for others is just trading time for money just like a job, and that is what I do not want. However, books with viral links and ever-green articles promoting my interest will provide residual income for a long time to come.

    What do you want?

For me it's not so much whether it's boring or not. It's whether I can start it or not and whether I get the flow of what I'm going to write or not.

I've had days where I can write well and days when nothing comes to mind. It gets harder when you try to force it because then your output should just be burned.

But I would say boring it is not.

It depends on the purpose of writing.

I've always loved fiction writing, since I first learned how to write - I've been "out of practice" for a while, but I'm getting inspired again - I've got tons of ideas floating around that need to get out on paper. I also have several ideas for nonfictional books...

Obligatory writing, I have to pump myself up to keep going - music, coffee, whatever. I'd do the same with writing for pleasure, but it doesn't take nearly as much effort to get excited about it

I feel, it would make us feel bore when we write more and more. It varies with the person. Some people would enjoy writing more.

I enjoy writing more when I'm passionate about something. I also take a break from writing by watching TV and listening to music.

Scanning through a few of the posts, I noticed a few people
saying they don't write on topics they're "not interested" in.

In many cases, I doubt that.

I've seen that many writers don't take on projects they are
not COMFORTABLE writing about...not necessarily because
it's not what they're interested in.

    Catch my drift?

Obviously, there are personal morals every writer (I hope)
follows that goes against what they feel is appropriate to
    write about. That's different.

I'm talking about topics that "question" your ability, and
CHOOSING not to do it BECAUSE it's different.

    I don't think that's a choice. I think it's a HABIT of running
    away from unfamiliar topics.

I used to ghostwrite and, I've often taken on projects only
BECAUSE they were different and challenging to me on
topics and subjects...many of which I have never heard of
    before.

Running my writing service this way made me think outside
the box and understand marketing that much better.

Quite the opposite what most writers do, I turned down
much work I was TOO familiar with...in order to grow as both
a writer and more importantly...a marketer and business man.

I like this thread, I love to write although I can say if I am writing on an unknown subject it may be a little intimidating. But this has pushed me to come up with several ways to create content. I have sat down in libraries for hours trying to figure out ways to make content and keep it fresh. This makes things interesting for me and it becomes a challenge. I write at night in the summer and during the day during the cold months. When the weather is nice it is hard for me to site down and bang out content while the sun shines in my room. But once the sun goes down I can write all night. If the day is cloudy as it often is in the winter and fall I can write all day easily. And just to show you how much fun it can be just take what I have just written. You can create several ideas from this paragraph alone if your core subject was " writing articles". Example

Reasons why writing on an unknown subject is intimidating to some writers.

The importance of coming up with several ways to keep your content fresh.

Sitting down and brainstorming what kind of writer you want to be.

Making your writing interesting so that you can do it without feeling dread.

Knowing what times of day put you in a certain state of mind to write like a maniac.

Using your content to create new ideas for other articles in an artful way.

This is an example of how I broke down my paragraph to give me an idea for several other articles. I can either write them off the top of my head or find information to support them. I do this often as it makes things interesting. I can do it with virtually any piece of content. So as you see it is really a matter of how fun you make it.

I think a lot of it has to do with the subject matter, and whether one has familiarity with it or not. Another important point mentioned above is also true; the purpose of your writing (whether for business or pleasure) can have significant bearing on your motivation to write. I suppose that by changing your perspective/mindset on writing it can really turn things around, and make you become significantly more productive (even if you have to lie to yourself).
