I searched for how to increase the pagerank on google then clicked on the first link. The information that they are giving is completely wrong and can actually get you in trouble. I wonder how many people got hurt because of them.

why would somebody do that?

Welcome to the Interwebs! Just because something is high ranking doesn't mean its anywhere near right!

Besides why are you looking to increase your page rank?

A higher page rank doesn't always mean a higher ranking in Google, you should know that by now

That's why the button says "I'm feeling lucky" instead of "I'm feeling lazy"

Usually because they don't know any better. Monkey hear, monkey repeat.

Oh sure, great, make fun of monkeys. Now I'll have to sleep all night with my shotgun loaded and ready to go. He don't take kindly to that kind of talk, and he knows you're a friend of mine. Thanks, Dennis. Thanks a lot.

Friends like him, don't need no.... mumble..... grumble.....

John, sorry man, I don't know what I was thinking! Tell your monkey it was a joke and take him out for a banana split. Tell him it's on me.

Point out that it's humor in the vein of the Geico caveman commercials. You know how your monkey loves them. I'm sure he'll understand.

Could it just be really out-of-date? Ranking techniques change all the time - could be an old page that's held on to its old ranking even though it isn't relevant anymore.

It's hard to answer your question intelligently without knowing
what it is you think is "completely wrong and can actually get
    you in trouble."

Without knowing that all I can surmise is the guy must
know something if he has the first link on the first page
for a keyword you thought was important enough to search.

      Very good point!

It's also possible the guy was using the advice that the OP says will get you in trouble, but hasn't yet been caught at it.

It all boils down to this...all replies in this thread are just guesses because there aren't any facts to go on, only opinion.

Just to keep the guessing going...

The person who runs the site in question might not even be following their own SEO advice, and may be intentionally giving out 'bad' advice to keep others away from their top spot.

And this is very much possible to do - although an unfortunate practice.
