Amazon Affiliate - expected conversion rate?

Hi All,

I originally joined this site a few years back but then got consumed into a wave of local internet marketing projects. That business is running on auto pilot now so I've got some free time and decided to build a few amazon affiliate sites.

Here's my issue....

I've sent over 140 clicks through to amazon but they have resulted in no sales yet. In the rest of my business I'd call that one a failure and move onto another niche. But since I'm new to Amazon I thought I'd better ask the experts....

So what's a reasonable conversion rate for amazon sales assuming the traffic is very targeted?

I've got a #2 listing in Google for one of my keyword phrases and a Wordpress site powered by WP Robot and WP Unique. The visitor reads the product description and reviews and clicks through to Amazon....yet so far no sales.

The product is a high end golf putter.

Any suggestions or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John

  • It really depends on the price point. I have some sites promoting low dollar stuff that get 8% conversions. Then I have high dollar sites that get so few conversions it is not worth listing.

You use the low dollar itens to get you up the commission ladder so that when you sell your bigger ticket items, you are at a higher commission. Then the lower conversions are not an issue.

4% is about the lowest that I have noticed. Some days up to 15%.

Depends on how targeted you are.

Are you using auto-gen junk? No one likes to read that...they want real information. That would explain your low conversion rate.

I average around 10% from a low ticket site (average 30 dollar product price).

Are people finding your site through targeted product names or a generic term that is less targeted?

  • i get a few hundred amazon clicks per day, most of them through google, I average a 3-5% conversion

also, it depends on the link type, omakase links convert higher for me than direct links for instance

When I checked today I was sitting at a conversion of 5.04% which is actually a small improvement of where I was last week.

I'm not sure how you have your website setup but when I went from the large widgets with many products to a specific product per page I noticed my conversions starting to improve. As a result I am now devoting 1 page per product but I'm still early in that transition process so no real hard data to report.

    Respectfully,

My conversion is usually around 8% range on average.

Two tips for conversion that you may find useful

    1. presell the click. They need to know if they click over to amazon what is the big benefit they get when take action. discount, free shipping, etc, etc

    2. I use google related search and wonder wheel to have a very focused and niched blog. Usually sells one or at most 2 products after i have tested them on hub pages. The blog is focused on what they are looking for

I would suggest the following. Go to ezine articles. see the most viewed articles in the shopping category. pick amazon related products follow along to landing pages and you can see how good performing sites are laid out to sell the click

    Hope this helps

I have been reading Amazon are amazing at selling things, I was under the impression just sending them the traffic would be enough. Is writing a 300 word sales article vital?

I find that it depends on the product you sell as well. I have had a few sites that converted at almost 0% and I think it's because people could just go to Walmart and buy the item. Also, sometimes Amazon does not have the lowest prices on the item you are promoting and that can lower conversions as well.

This is my opinion and my conversion is at around 7% right now total.

        Cheers

          Wow!

Thank you all for such great replies. It's going to take me a few days to wade through your suggestions but here's a few things that jump to mind right away.

1 - my choice of a test product was a high end (i.e., expensive) putter. That may be part of the problem. If someone was going to spend $200 on a new putter they may want to try it out first at their local pro shop

2 - my presell could definitely use improvement

3 - I have no idea what "omakase links" are so I'll have to check into that one

4 - Like every business...it's a numbers game. If one product gets 0% and another gets 10% you'll average 5% and that's ok. So basically I need to test with a bunch more products before assuming that I've got some weird marketing/technical anomaly.

          Thanks again for your responses!

It's not just about conversion, my conversion is only .78%

If a site is selling $1000+ item, it only take 1 click purchase that month to make a site worth the time...

    So, take consideration of that..

To win the amazon, game, you really have to massive sites built...because you will experience google dancing with 3 month - 4 month...

but niche site will jump back high on rank, not much back linking need be done to it after that...

    Good Luck!

wp-robot and unique works just fine..

listen to Dan, Neil V, Nick, Michael

their all Amazon Experts...each product has it's own weakness and advantage..

Study Neil V. for finding product..

Study Dan, see how he target Hobbies (addictions)

Study nick, how he can fast SEO your site to Google with 24-48 hours

Study Michael, his own unqiue twist... of seo, and finding keywords..

    They all works...

But you have to come up a system that works for you...

    Good Luck!

All the Guru going to kill me to
share all these Tips with you:

    1. Less is More...

Providing 500 word description, to engage the visitor..want click "more>>" to go to your site...

    2. Don't let them stay at your site too long... all links must direct to amazon... even they don't buy the item you marketing they will buy
something else... the more time they spent on amazon they more chance
    they going to buy...

    3. traffic traffic traffic... = Money .... Enough said...

    4. don't count clicks, count unique visitors... one person keep click
the link doesn't help you...the more unique visitors it helps...
    simple statistics...

    5. study, link-conversion...what click converts the most? banner? no I don't think so... Content Text?...Bingo!

    6. design 101: don't make your page full of banners, adense... crap...cut them out...One purpose direct traffic to amazon... keep it clean and simple... Don't let the visit guest where to click.... Do this NOW... Waa Laaa! conversion increases...

    7. .....hmmm... I will keep that secret for now....

Let me know if you got anymore questions..

Hey everyone remember, this is a BUSINESS...not something
you should be take light with...

do you have measurement in place?

        do you have effective metrics?

are you tracking? tracking your sale? tracking days you making sale?
tracking type of the traffic get your buying leads....

Most people are navigating blind ...

One thing I love about amazon is, it tells all the story on your backend office....

How many of you actually took the time, study the TOC, study commission structures....and study other people's failures...just get on Amazon Affiliate Forum, lots ppl complain not making money...because they focus on the wrong things...

we have the upper hand here over the WSO....

Will you fly a plane in a storm, without instruments?

        No, unless you are Crazy!...

So, why don't you have a system setup?

and Hire a Coach... someone has done stuff before...
cut down your learning curve...and save you loads of
        money...

Instead waste $500, in a marketing campaign, spent that
to hire a coach... tax write off...

        or

        hire Han .....

Great stuff Han. Thanks very much!

If I may ask a question: people talk about conversion rate at 5%, 10%, 1.78%, etc, etc. I am assuming they are refering to the conversion once the visitor reach Amazon.

From the unique visitors that come to your site in the first place, what percentage of visitors sent to Amazon would be regarded as good?

          Inter.

            It depends on the Niche

study keywords... are you using buying keywords:

            for example:

'nikon cooplix 800" <=-- made this up, not real...

might only get 5 hits a day, but that's good because conversion chance is high...

            now if you target at

            'nikon' you get 5000 hits...

but most of them are not ready to buy

but hey it's good...traffic... send to your amazon page..
they will get email next day, say, Hey Since you visit this page
check out these best sellers... if he buys... within 24 hours

of anything....u get paid... that is if he doesn't return it...

            so everything is relative...

            just test my friend...

            setup a site... test it...

after awhile you will figure it out..

I personally use both keywords structures..

double the pleasure...if you know what I mean.. ha ha..

140 clicks could be from just 1 person browsing. I gave up worrying about conversion rates because Amazon can be so variable. Yesterday one of my sites had over 400 clicks with no sales yet another had 8 clicks and 6 items were sold - linking products. But usually the first one makes sales every day with less clicks.

The figures that I take the most notice of is how much I earn and how many sales I make. Every month I aim to make more sales earlier to increase my percentage sooner.

I was getting fed up with my sites getting so many US visitors when most are targeted for the UK and my Amazon account was UK. I read something on here a few days ago about a WP plug in called Amazon Affiliate Link Localizer which you can use to pick up sales from the UK and the US site plus a few others. I joined the .com as an affilliate and set the localizer up on one of my sites and found that it works with WP Robot.

It depends on the product and price point. For a super targeted site (ex-- the site is exclusively about the golf putter) I'd expect a conversion rate no lower than 5%. I've had sites result in conversions much, much higher than that too.

I haven't read through this thread so I don't know what other people have told you but I like to keep my Amazon sites short and sweet with a call to action like "Get 25% off Awesome Golf Putter on Amazon today!" I also like to include a big clickable picture ad to the right side.

If you're cryptic in your link to Amazon by saying something like, "Click here for more info" your clickthru rate might go higher but I've found the conversions go down. When people click on my calls to action that mention Amazon they're generally ready to buy unless they're just price comparing.
