Hi- I heard a rumor that Amazon will not deal with affiliates that are doing business in Colorado. Is there any validity to this rumor?

I don't know about Colorado, but a few states including North Carolina have passed "Amazon" laws requiring sales of any product from a company that uses affiliates in that state are required to have sales tax collected. North Carolina and a few other states rammed the law through so quickly that Amazon did not have enough time to comply between approval and activation of the law so they pulled out. Only states with enough affiliate sales will get reactivated. Of course, there are now no affiliate sales so I don't guess there will be any reactivated. Look at Amazon.com's affiliate program rules and i think you will find the forbidden states listed.

It's not a rumor. Amazon, in an attempt to prove a point, canceled all Colorado affiliates after Colorado passed a new tax law.

The link above includes a copy of the letter that was sent by Amazon. The same thing happened in North Carolina last summer.

Did this ever get resolved or did all the Colorado affiliates really get screwed? I was going to route some business through a Colorado LLC, but I may have to rethink that.

      zurich,

Amazon canceled all Colorado affiliates back in March and made final payouts by the end of May.

I never received the original email from Amazon in March and it wasn't until they made the final deposit to me in May that I learned what happened.

My Amazon income was an insignificant part of my overall revenue so it doesn't have a huge effect on me.

However, for other on-line businesses the impact may be major.

In addition, I've heard that affiliates in other programs may have the rug pulled out from under them as well.

I read elsewhere that some Commission Junction advertisers are doing the same thing.
