Viability of low competition search phrase/niche

Hi guys,

Just a few quick questions from a newbie Im hoping someone can advise me on.

I've found a niche I'm interested in and a 2 word search phrase for that niche which has about 2000 searches a month and low competition. The .com domain name that makes u the search phrase is also available - is this a good enogh position to try to get to number 1 in google for that phrase if I buy up the domain and set up my content right? The existing top results are from hubpages, squidoo, eza etc.

    The 2000 searches - is that broad, exact, or phrase? That could make a difference. Not that the numbers are accurate, but still. If the "low competition" you are talking about is when searching the phrase "in quotes" and is under 100K, preferably under 10K, then you could get to Page 1 easily, possibly #1. Hard to tell w/o exact numbers, but sometimes it's a crapshoot anyway.

    2 word phrase can definately have good ranking but cant really ensure it go to the #1. i will always suggest go for 3 or 4 word phrase with low competitive and search volume below 10k per month, it will give you better result and more targeted traffic

  • if you can find a few hundred phrases like and get them to rank you might do well but ranking for that won't get you a sale or two a month if you are lucky

    you can always test the waters and get the #1 spot every time with adwords and see if it's worth your time and if yes then try and rank a page for it.

    Thanks for the replies.

    I just based this on a check of the phrae on google adwords keyword tool. Is this a good marker for the potential of a niche?

    Without giving too much away, the phrase is XXXXXXXXX beginners and my web site would sell some products that are what a beginner is this area would need, especially givent hat search phrase.

    Ok guys, I went ahead and bought the domain. Anyone got any tips here on my chances? 2000 searches listed on the adwords tool with low competition and the URL is made up of that particular search phrase.....

    Seems that are you are going for it.
    How much is low competition for you?
    If it is less than 50K, chances are that you reach pretty fast the first page of Google (Number 1 is more difficult to say) with just a good on page SEO. So work on it.

    Yeah, I'm going to give it a try. My main thing is design work and making ready-to-go blogs for sale but I have a niche I am very interesed in myself so want to tey it out.

    I'm not 100% sure on the competition aspect of it though, adwords says less than 2000 searches and their graph says "low competition" - is this a reliable indicator or should I be looking at other figures?

      The best way to truly determine your competition is to do a Google search of the keyword without quotes and Use a tool like SEO for FireFox to determine the actual sites that you will be competing against.

      SEO for FireFox will provide you with the age of the page, the backlinks to the page, the PR of the page, etc. This is all valuable information that will help you learn, with experience, whether or not you can overcome your competition.

        The competition adwords tool talks about is the competion for adwords, not the actuall number of sites running for the same keyword you are.
        Make a search with " " and look at the number of search results. This is your competiton.
        Next you have to check the strength of the top 10 of those competitors to determine if you can beat them or not.
        I use KWBP or Market Samuray to do it. But you can use one free tool called Niche Market Finder. It will evaluate the PR, number of back links and other key factors of your competitors and give you a nice chart with the results. That will save you a lot of time.

    I did that and got 1620 results with the top 1 being a hubpages link. I'll check out those tools you mentioned.

    Good luck!

    Without more details it sounds like your on the right track.

    If the site is set up with the right SEO and you can get some good content up with high PR backlinks you could have a shot.

    You could test the water with a small adwords budget for your keywords pointed towards one of your products sales pages just to see if you will be able to get traffic and monitize it.
