When your hosting account is set up with one domain and the company will allow you to set up other domains on the same account.
    I hope this helps.

Mobiusman talks about the Head Brain/Gut Brain system. Did you know you have two different brains?

    Main Domain Example:

    Google.com

    Sub-Domain Examples:

    adwords.google.com
    maps.google.com
    translate.google.com
    labs.google.com
    picasaweb.google.com
    ditu.google.com

For all practical purposes a sub-domain
is a folder that resides in the server
structure which a domain is linked to.

    Search engines view sub-domains as
a separate domain, which is why they
may have a different pagerank than
    the main site.

So to break it down a little more:

    sub-domain.Domain.com

A sub-domain is often used as a way of
segmenting a site into sections or topics.
