Psychology Lessons From The "Pickup Artist"

As many of you probably know...Eban Pagan was a dating niche marketer before he was the business guru he is today.

The reason I bring him up is because one of his competitors (or colleagues I really don't know) is the "pickup artist" Mystery.

I was watching old episodes from "The Pickup Artist Season 2" from a year or two ago and I really have noticed some interesting things about people.

It's funny to see "rejection" or "walls" or "get the hell away from me" in human eyes and sometimes I think many marketers forget that people are having these same reactions when they stare at their computer screen.

I'd like for anyone to have a look at these episodes on VH1 and see if you notice any marketing or sales tricks from an, arguably, very sales driven "game"...

The Pickup Artist 2 | Show Cast, Episodes, Guides, Trailers, Web Exclusives, Previews | VH1.com

I think there are some great lessons here plus it's pretty funny at times (wow is all i can say in regards to some people's "people" skills).

Have a great evening!

Cheers,

Brad

A lot of dating and seduction tips have foundations in sales/marketing concepts (ie. The Yes Ladder)

It's all related... marketing, sales, pick-up, NLP...

We are always selling/marketing even if we don't realize it... when you're trying to convince a girl to go out with you, you have to sell yourself... some people go overboard with hard-selling (hey look at my gold watch!) which turns people off... some do it more subtly... like telling stories of exotic vacations (and this leads them to visualize going on such trips with you... recalling previous vacations they had and generally creating positive anchors)

I'd also add magic to the list... a handful of marketers I know were trying to get somewhere with magic before they realised they were actually in marketing.

Ha! I just made my post while you were writing that. Except, I am a full-time magician and stand-up comedian.

I use marketing to get gigs so when it comes down to it, no matter what you do in life, everything is sales and marketing.

Ya sure...when you are trying to impress any person, it mins exactly you are selling yourself. The main thing is that ,how confident you are with your lines.

I read The Game which is all about Mystery and those guys running wild. It's a fun read.

There's one thing they do that I do when I'm performing close-up magic at restaurants.

I'll walk up to a table, and if I get the idea they don't want me there, I'll say, "Hi, I'm Zach. I'm the house magician here and I'm only going to show you one trick."

They figure, "How bad can just one trick be?"

Once I show them that one killer effect, I start to leave, and they always ask me to stay longer. Now, instead of me selling myself, I'm a guest that they asked to be a part of their group.

The pick up guys do the same thing. They'll ask a woman a question or tell a quick anecdote, but they'll do it as their body language says they're leaving. They say they just need a second, but whatever it is they say is compelling enough that the women ask him to stick around. It changes the whole dynamic.

I'll leave it to you to apply this to your sales calls. The principle is easy to use, and it works!

Had no idea pick-up "gurus" are now into Internet Marketing. Actually, I first was into magic, then into the pick-up thing, only now got to IM

It works the other way as well.
Turn your IM game into your club game and you'll not only get a date, but you might sell her something too!

Actually, your confidence is less important than your capacity to read someone else and understand what drives them.

What seduction gurus fail to grasp about women (or pretty much everything, really) and that marketers miss in exactly the same context is that it's not about your ego payoff - it's about THEIRS. As long as you're so caught up in your agenda, how much you score, how much you make, how many more for a quota, what number this one means to your bottom line, you're ignoring the reality there is someone else there paying attention to you, who recognizes there is no natural rapport or synch happening, and who sees through anything you say as transparent BS.

Seduction guys never actually "score" with chicks because they could care less about understanding chicks, or dealing with chicks or what makes chicks tick, or anything about any individual chick they're dealing with...she's a target, she's a hot babe, she's a casualty...they never see HER.

Marketers do the same thing...customers, targets, clicks, $$$...but never see who it is behind the wallet, what drives them, what they're hungry for.

Mystery is a world class idiot without a shred of a clue about anything. He no more understands human nature than a head of lettuce. He needs ploys because he has nothing else to offer. Marketers need gimmicks because they really don't believe in the product's ability to sell itself.

You don't need confidence as much as you'd need a clue about the one with the purse - in both cases

      *cough*

Yeah... that's pretty much lesson #1 that you get from reputable seduction gurus.

If you want to trash an industry, maybe you should know something about it first. Just sayin'.

It's all about confidence and how you handle a situation carefully which also applies in marketing.
