Hello!

As I am currently based outside of the US, I have become interested in the foreign online market. I understand that most people here make money by establishing themselves in the English speaking online market. Is that true? And if so, is it because the denizens of English speaking countries (the way I understand it first and foremost the United States), are accustomed to buying online? Is it maybe because the most attractive affiliate programs are intended for English speakers?

I would really appreciate some insights from someone who does indeed have Non-English online marketing experience. If such a person were to answer I would enjoy reading about what language(s) they have experience in and how marketing strategies differ in that(/those) language(s).

Also, since I am currently studying Chinese/Chinese culture and becoming proficient in Mandarin, I am especially interested in that market (if it exists, as I am not sure it does).

Thanks in advance!

Hey, thats a great idea. Especially since you're german, you can try building a german site.
Im from India and I think there is a problem that applies to all asian countries for NOW. Including china. Thing is people here are still not that accustomed to buying stuff online. people wud rather shop offline. But Euro countries wud do good i guess. PM me if ur interested in starting a venture.

  • That is too bad. I had hoped to be able to tap into the Chinese market.

I am generally interested in connecting with some experienced online marketers, that is one of the reasons I just joined this forum. Probably the best way to contact me is via Twitter. I would love to learn from someone interested in teaching :-)

Even so, the question remains. Is there an international crowd here or does this forum cater only to the English-speaking market?

I am German too and have been trying to adress the German marked and found it very difficult. After years of working on them, my German pages make still very little money, at least they promote physical books I wrote, so it was worth the while...

Since I am living in Spain I have been trying to do something in Spanish as well, without much luck, though. I don´t kow if it is that people here still don´t shop online that much - but there are more problems. I do mainly affiliate marketing, and altough there are tons of people speaking Spanish worldwide, the affiliate programs are still local. Meaning if I promote something here in Spain, traffic from Latin America actually won´t help me at all.

So, I dropped all my Spanish projects, update about four German blogs more or less regularly (almost as a hobby) and the rest is English. After all, it is a business, right?

  • Thanks for your input, Geolina.

I am sad to hear that the European market is not yet ripe for the picking. I had imagined that (mainland-)Europe would have caught up to the United States of the late 90s by now. I have thought about selling an information product in a certain niche in Germany, but am scared of the initial investment costs, since I am but a poor (money, not grades ) student.

May I ask what kind of returns you are seeing from your German blogs? Also, are you, or have you tried, selling information products, like ebooks, in Germany?

    Thanks in advance!

I make money both in the Norwegian and the English speaking markets.

I do not have many options when it come to affiliate programs in norway, so I usually stick to AdSense. Still I have a website in norwegian selling an english ebook, and it is doing pretty well considering our population.

I believe that you have both german ebay and amazon? Combine that with AdSense, and you should be able to make a few bucks/euros.

    • Thanks for your answers MisterMunch!

What you say is true, I also believe it is possible to make money with Amazon, etc. and Adsense in any market with a significant Internet population. However, I also intend to sell my own products and wanted to know whether or not I should even consider a non-English speaking demographic.

I make 80% of my income in PT market. In fact, been selling or giving away all my EN sites.

IF the competition is still low (and I believe it is) go for the big markets: credit, airplane flights, beauty and weight loss.

For those you can choose between Adsense OR affiliate stuff with Tradedoubler, CJ, etc.

Let me add this info: my PT products (just like the ones selling at Clickbank) are on hold cause the market is not ready for them YET.

But there is a local market in every language, you can be sure.

Get a top 10 for a major credit keyword and you'll see.

Edit: Whats the keyword for credit or personal credit in German? Let me run a test.

  • Hi Fernando Veloso.

Thanks for your encouraging words and insightful help. I am interested to know how much of the traffic you receive on your PT sites are from Brazil, which has an Internet population 72,027,700 users as of Dec. 09 according to this site:

    www(dot)internetworldstats.com/south(dot)htm

That is about the population of Germany total.

The keywords you are looking for are "Kredit" and "Privatkredit".

    Thanks again!

As I suspected some players with Adsense sites in those markets.

Privatkredit has 100K searches per month and less then 1 million pages competing.

Thing is: IF you search real good, you'll find a couple niches with low competition and good pay.

You just need to focus and be ready to spend some time searching niches and anallise top 10 and their REAL strength.

      • Thanks again!

I am still thinking about niches for AdSense-type sites. I am still a newbie, so and finding a niche seems to be the hardest part, since it's also the only creative part. The rest, like getting traffic is just work, you have to do it, not really think at all.

Even so, I still do not know if it make sense to sell an information product in the niches I think I do have or not. I think I am just going to go with it and see what happens. :-)

I am doing some Amazon, but the German Amazon Affiliate Program isn´t as attractive as the US-Version -you start with 5% (a bit more than in the US, I know), but you have to sell 21 items to go up to 5,5 %. In the US you go up from 4% at 6% after selling just 7 items. I guess people are more and more getting used to buying things over the net, not just books and plane-tickets.

But I have to admit that maybe I didn't put enough efford, competition must be lower in Germany. I was tackling different travel niches and there was a lot of competition - it just happens to be "my turf" but I didn't get lucky. I was actually just monetizing existing blogs, while now I am setting up sites to promote porducts. I guess, that is a more focused aproach.

Regarding Information Products: I have tried it and got bashed... I found that people in Germany believe that it has to be a scam if it comes as an Ebook and you have to pay for it. Might have to do with a certain German marketer, I am sure you know whom I am talking about . But then - the best German Ebooks I found where free, the ones you get in places like digibux where not the best quality, nothing I would like to promote. But I haven't been back there in while, and actually don't know what Clickbank offers, they were just starting their German program back then and didn't really have anything to sell.

But you've got me all inspired, I'll head over there right now and have a look!

Ah, something else: I have tried to promote English ebooks, a total failure, I guess, we are just not as international as the Norwegians...
            {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[2186210].message }}
  • Thank you Geolina!

This information is pure gold for me. I think I know who you were talking about, regarding scams ;-)

If you have some nice successes with Clickbank, please keep me in the loop as I am very much interested in launching my own ebooks.

I just scanned though clickbank and didn´t find anything too interesting. But I will reactivate an old blog with a family related topic and spend the last half hour signing up for affiliate programs on zanox.de. We´ll see how it goes!

Let me know when you have something on clickbank, maybe I can promote it?!? I think an ebook for the German marked has to be quite different than one for the US market - a lot less hype, and an entirely different sales copy as well. Good luck with your pojects!

Why would someone from Europe's most developed country ask such a question? Of course there is. There are 2 people In Germany that I know of that have scaled things up pretty quickly and are now in the high end of six figures per year. And I'm sure that they're not the only ones.

A simple way to gauge the profitability of a foreign market is to weigh these factors: population of country, consumer buying power, internet usage statistics.

The most profitable markets in the future will be China and India largely due to population number and accelerated growth (studies predict that around 2045 both China and India will outrank USA as the financial power of the world).

As for now in Europe, besides UK, there is Germany, France, Italy, Spain, New Zealand. Outside there's Canada and Australia and then there is Mexico and in South America there is Brazil. Brazil is a booming for internet marketers. They are doing very well over there.

And then there are also smaller countries that haven't yet matured and there's no point in getting into.

I promote products on the spanish market and conversions are not so high as on english market...it seems spanish speaking customers don't like buying on internet...however there's less competition so you can make good money anyway...

Majority of products that are sold online are for european countries, mainly US. So, it is always difficult for non english speakers to make good money.
