How to Build a Team as a Business Owner

Dear all,

As part of my ongoing project to "open-source" a lot of good business strategies and online marketing (which will come slightly later), I present my first post to WarriorForum for your reading and consideration.

I hope this helps you out regardless of what kind of business you run, and I appreciate any comments or feedback any warriors may have.

Enjoy!

How to Build a Team as a Business Owner

Wishing you success,
WB

P.S. Next blog post in a week or so will likely be on article marketing

Good article. I have often heard the saying: "Hire for attitude and train for skill"

Thanks, and agreed! It's a pity that so few business owners seem to get this these days though.

I've also just added Digg / Twitter / Facebook sharing tools to the site in case anyone likes using those to share. Keep the comments flowing!

      Cheers,
      WB

        Cheers, an interesting read.

The thinking is hire people who are dedicated and enthuasistic towards working for you. Do not hire people who are more interested in going on their own and starting their own ventures.

That rules out most of the warriors then!

That's an interesting point. A lot of the time, I can see it makes sense to hire people who are entrepreneurial and want their own business...but the real talent is in identifying who would have YOUR business if given the choice. Making your employees feel like the business is their baby too is one of the most difficult things you can do.

Agreed as well. Depending on the job, I'd much rather hire an ambitious, creative, and intelligent 19yo who's mind is still whizzing a good speed, versus someone who's older and thinks they already know everything.

Oh, I always thought teenagers knew everything. As the old saying goes, "hire a teenager while they still know everything."

I love this philosophy. I remember that since I started outsourcing, that has been my learning in terms of finding the right virtual staff for me to work on my business in the long term. It takes time to find them but still, once everything gets in place, everything becomes worth it especially when you get double the results that you expected.

Having run a team of 20+ people in my last internet business I can definitely agree about hiring for attitude.

People who believe they can do the job usually find a way to make it happen. Those who don't approach the job with a belief in themselves (or what you're doing) can truly drag down the entire operation.

When it comes to hanging out outside of work, I think it's good for the employees but the owner/manager should probably be careful with how much time is spent socializing outside of work.

That's just the way I live, and I'm sure not everyone is that way.

An interesting point, Mike. I can understand why you think the managers should be careful about time spent socialising outside of work, but I also suspect the degree of control here to be minimal. Perhaps reducing the factors that would harm the business if employees socialised outside of work in the first place, would be a better approach? Not sure here.

Haha, so true. As time goes by, I find I know less and less!
