What are the sources of "network traffic" ?

Hi,

One of the gurus has just started talking about non-search engine "network traffic". Does anyone know anything about this so-called 80% of total traffic that is not through search engines? And can be targetted too!

My first guess would be that they own a network of sites and they share the traffic between them. So basically they throw links on their sites for their other sites.

Just a guess, since the the question was a little vague.

I have come to understand that if you have a huge list of faithful followers, making money is as easy as sending out an email. It is building this list that is difficult...

However I get the feeling that this "guru" didn't have that in mind when talking about "network traffic". Besides, if you already have a big list, then you don't need any gurus to tell you what to do. Typically at this stage you already have your own product to promote...
