Are Pop ups Good or Bad

hey warriors,

im currently contemplating adding a pop up on my blog. so when someone visits my page a pop up appears along the bottom. im not sure weather i would build my list quicker this way or if its a bit of a put of for people straight away.

    Test it...

Nobody here can tell you with any certainty if using pop-ups will be beneficial or detrimental for your business.

The best way to find out, is to get it up and running and split test..

As long as your pop-up doesn't appear everywhere on your site and on different pages, I think you'll find it helps, especially if you're using it to grow your list and are offering something for free with sign up?
    Cheers, Ray.

I don't know of a free one, but I do know that Ian Del Carmen has a similar product, with a much lower price tag..

Google around for some of Ian's stuff and I'm sure you'll find it..

You can't attribute "goodness" or "badness" to a popup.

This question pops up here with regular monotony and
the answer is always the same... it depends.

The only way to determine the effectiveness in your
niche market with your specific target audince is, as Jay
    says, to split test it.

    it depends...

some pop-ups are just damn annoying... especially if you keep seeing them everytime you go to the website to view new content.

Testing and getting feedback in terms of opt-in rate or readers' complaint will get you the answer you seek

I personally don't like them. But it depends on what you're using it for. I don't like the ones where they keep popping up and asking you to join them even though you already gave them the hint you don't want to. That alone makes me not want to come back to the site.

You talking about a popup or a slide in that appears at the bottom
    of your site?

Both increase opt ins quite nicely but the popups we have on our
blogs take 10-1 the ratio of the slide in technology we have appear
at the bottom of the sites.

When we removed the popups, of course the slide increased it's
opt in rate but never opted in as many as the popup managed.

If you do decide to install it on a blog that has your name attached
to it, ensure you set the cookies to only show the thing once.

The ones that slide up slightly from the bottom of the page don't
annoy anybody and can stay permanently, make the popup a one
    off gig.

I can show you both in action on the same site, if you want to PM me.

Personally as a websurfer I don't mind them, that is until you get the ones that you're caught in the eternal loop and cannot escape and becomes a epic struggle to leave the page. (Like I just had happened to me..) Indiana Jones would of had an easier time that some from leaving that page.

I agree with Jay about testing, I am a big advocate of testing and tweaking because you never will know what works.

But also I would like to see an much more affordable system to test it out as well. Rather than throwing more money at the problem.. So I'll keep a look out for a free or low cost version to test.

I think you cannot always use popups on your site, for example if you get traffic with adwords. It's against the tos of Google.
