Anybody familiar with Rackspace?

I'm looking to switch hosting providers to a vendor with service and support more oriented to sophisticated websites. Consequently, I wonder if anybody is familiar with an outfit called Rackspace. This is a name that I haven't seen mentioned in other similar posts on the hosting topic.

I currently lease my own server with a well known provider, but whenever there is a support issue, or an upgrade, or whatever, I'm quoted x hours of downtime, and it has (every time) ended up being 3x hours of getting websites back up and functioning normally.

Recommendations, Words of Wit, or Wisdom??

I've heard good and bad things about Rackspace. I guess it depends what you'll be running and what you need it to do.

As you are looking for a (semi-)managed solution, high-quality equipment, high availability and responsive support -- something a "cut above," personally I would recommend Handy Networks. They have an *impeccable* reputation at Web Hosting Talk. I personally host with them and the service has been phenomenal ... truly high-availability and outstanding, fast support.

For example, the last time I needed a reboot (which is a very rare occurrence anyway) they hit the switch in 3 minutes. That is very hard to beat ......... and their prices are better than Rackspace.

Send in a request to sales@handynetworks.com and they will custom-build any config you want, and swing you a nice deal. Every time I've asked for a custom quote, I've been offered outstanding pricing.

Rackspace is a high end managed provider that does custom solutions. They're costly but provide high class products, service and support. If you need a high power cluster for a very active web app with intense database load, and you need it protected against ongoing DDOS attacks, you turn to Rackspace. But you need to have the budget to match the extra work they can do for you.
