Has anyone had this Twitter issue?

I brought Dana_W ebook about how to use twitter (which is excellent by the way) however, twitter suspended my account! I added about 1980 followers yesterday. I thought I could add 2000 followers without any problems?

You mean YOU followed 1980 people or THEY followed you? IF they followed you then it must be a record! Dana will be around shortly and can give you an answer...after all she IS the Twitter QUEEN...all knowing and seeing!

Yea...I had a similar problem. I followed 2000 people. But my account got suspended due to to many posts, ...not following people. I had followed all of them like 2 moths ago.

I had several rss feeds loaded and I update everything daily. So I had like probably crazy tweets happening. I realize that everyone else does to....but my Tweets would have been keyword related (due to the topic I was updating) and probably were portrayed as spam.

Anyway, it is being resolved but....if a social network is going to all RSS feeds and let your "tweets" reflect your posts....then they should not suspend an account without warning.

Wait man... did you follow 1980 people or did 1980 people started following you?

If you followed (added) all those people within 1 day... obviously it triggers twitter to look at your account under spam!!!

especially after you have clicked a follow button 2000 times!

In Twitter's eyes that is spamming. It's just not normal behaviour to follow 1980 people in one day. Twitter has been refining its system to detect this kind of behaviour.

Really, if you want to build up a following on Twitter, do it reasonably - a small number of new follows every day.

If so that is the world's most bizarre definition of spamming.

How can following people be spamming?

If I sign up for 1000 lists in a day, is that spamming? Of course not- signing up for a list is not spamming... I'd be the one receiving the messages.

If Twitter has an issue with following lots of people, why don't they just set a daily limit?

It's because someone released a software that helps people to follow tons of others, and many who use it are getting the boot because it's a spammy tool. This was probably released after Dana followed all of those people manually.

OK, but this still makes no sense.

I can see if there was a way to make lots of people follow me, that could be looked at as spammy, but how is the opposite true?

What is spammy about choosing to follow others to see what they write?

Is it spammy to sign up for a lot of newsletters in a short time?

Is it spammy to read lots of forum threads in a short time?

"Spammy" involves sending info, not choosing to receive it!

I can't be the only one who sees the absurdity here. Pretty soon the word "spam" is going to be meaningless due to misuse.

            Hi Chris,

The tool does other things as well as allowing the user to follow people. These are likely to be things that twitter doesn't want them to do (IE spammy things.)

If you don't like using the word spammy to describe these type of actions, just replace the word spammy with 'automated overly-promotional mass actions'.

I doubt that it's the 'following' part that twitter object to. I suspect it's to do with the messages sent out into the system. I also suspect that the idea is to follow lots of people in order that some of them follow you back and can therefore be messaged.

It happens to most web 2.0/free sites that as well as giving the user the ability to socialize, consequently also give the user the ability to promote. People use the site in a way that is not as it was intended and not appreciated by the average user and not conducive to a pleasant, social user experience for the average user who is using it in the spirit that the site was intended.

Therefore, why shouldn't the word spammy be used broadly to describe any type of messaging that is completely promotional and interferes with the 'normal' use of an online system?

Should we also consider it absurd that -

            a) the traditional use of the word 'surfing' is in relation to riding a wave in the ocean, yet is being used to describe viewing online web pages?

            b) the traditional use of the word 'host' is in relation to someone inviting others to their home or other place for a gathering, yet it is being used to describe a company that provides server space for a fee?

Are these words also in danger of losing their meaning due to overuse? Somebody call the word police...

I followed 2000 people on my first day. I know tons of people who have done the same. Twitter allows you to follow up to 2000 people and then they won't let you follow any more.

Not only that but at the end of a week I unfollowed the 1700 or so people who were not following me back - and I went and followed 1700 or 1800 different people. I never got in trouble.

One other person, who I won't name, sent me an email saying that their account was suspended. They sent an email to Twitter to ask why. It turned out that 24 people had complained that this person was sending out a Tweet with a link to their sales page, again and again. The same tweet, with just a link to a sales page, several times a day.

I specifically advise NOT to do that kind of thing in my ebook. What I do recommend is talking about your work, what you are doing, etc., but don't send out the exact same Tweet repeatedly and certainly not linking to a sales page.

I should clarify one thing I just said - once you get 2000 people following YOU, you can follow more than 2000 people. Twitter does not say exactly how many.

I have seen a person followiung 25000 people and being followed by over 6000 people... I am sure many people have seen him.

So I guess there also the limitations are of the mind only.

Guys I think I know what happened. My settings were on "all @ replies" instead of "@ replies to the people I'm following". That must of raised a red flag. I will keep you guys posted as to what twitter says about this

I may be wrong, but I find it hard to believe that Twitter would ban someone who followed 2000 people in one day ONLY for that reason. I mean, they ALLOW you to follow up to 2000 people. If they think that following 2000 people in one day means that you are spamming people, then they would just set the limit lower.

As I mentioned above, I've now heard from two people who said they were suspended by Twitter - but one of them has heard back from Twitter who said they were reported by 24 people for sending out multiple affiliate links. That's a lot of complaints.

I don't know if Tyrone accidentally did something that people on Twitter would perceive as spamming, but I hope he hears back from them quickly.

That's odd, the other person who DMed me when their account was suspended told me that they heard back within a couple of days. I know it's a pain, but you might want to message them again.

I still have not heard anything to suggest that ONLY following a whole bunch of people in one day there would get you suspended. The other person who told me that their account was suspended also had 24 people complain that they repeatedly sent out a link to a sales page.

I tend to agree with Kevin Riley and have been following people at a slower rate. Besides, hitting the follow button 2000 times in one day is a lot of work. I am usually on Twitter most days. When I see an interesting post I check out that person and start following some of their crowd. I am rapidly building up a following, just not quite as fast as some say I can.
