plasterer in need of help

Hello warriors,

At the beginning of the year i was £8k in debt.... I am off travelling in april and well I obviously needed to pay the debt off before i could start saving.

So by the first of august I had paid everything off. Then the plastering work has slowed right down. I was saving £300 a week when I was on the tools, however the construction industry the way it is I not getting anywhere near the work.

So I have returned back to develeping my sites, i have forums which do ok but i have exhausted every money making avenue with them, so i am lookin for new ideas to increase my income.

I have all the hours in the day so any suggestions would be grateful.

Cheers

Danny

G'day, Danny. Expanding on what Darrell has said....Do a DIY Video of how to plaster properly. There is a huge market for DIY info as many people are looking at house maintenance themselves instead of paying tradesmen to do the work because of the current financial climate.

You could package the vid and book and change a few quid for it.

You could even break it down to separate areas...cornice, corner and butt joint. Adds more value to it and you could charge more for the package.

Kim, Milton Keynes isn't that far away. Well, maybe if you're British it could be, but we used to fly an hour each way to go to some clients in China.

The plastering trade is your banker.

The construction industry goes through these cycles every 9 or 10 years and it has to be expected.

I started plastering in 1968 and have ridden those downturns very well by using a simple method which 'anyone' can do.

I used to send out photo-copied letters to as many builders and decorators as I could find in the Yellow pages. I would send them in batches of 20 every few days to give people time to respond. The success rate was great, and I got lifetime customers that way.

My sons are now doing the same. (Plastering).
Just after Xmas the trade fell FLAT!

I sent out batches of postcards for 'them' this time, and hey-presto, they now have more work than they know what to do with while everyone else is floundering.

Give it a try, you'll get INSTANT money with plastering, and you can still keep up your IM endeavours in the evenings or your spare time.

      Good luck,

      Pete.

and I thought is was only the SA building industry that's in the doldrums!

David, I have a number of building related web sites and could use a couple of building/home improvement "how to" info products to offer them.

Now that is an absolutely cracking idea, do you have a copy of what you write? I am gonna be right on the case of that idea.

As far as the ebooks and videos are concearned I have often thoughtabout it, however I work on my own so filming does prove difficult.... might employ a labourer though.

The forum is testement to how big the market is, I am pretty sure that my forum is now the biggest forum in the plastering industry.

could see if I can find a pre written ebook that I can buy the rights to then rewrite ect.... that might work.

        Thanks again chaps

        I will keep you posted

You're absolutely right. One chap already has a VERY successful site doing just that.
Videos just five or six minutes long showing just about EVERY aspect of the DIY spectrum.

            Home Improvement

He makes good money through the adsense impressions on each page.

Always room for competition there I'd think.

          I don't write anything fancy.
          Just tell them;
          Who you are.
Where you are. (Your physical address)
          The area you work within.
The aspects of the trade you excel in.
          Your phone number/s
          Your website URL

A 'little' emphasis on certain phrases or words with Red and Blue 'bolded' colour (sparingly) will draw them to your card when they pick up the mail.

It's that simple. No need to get all lovey-dovey or hyper.

If they're interested, they'll phone you.
If not, they'll just bin your card/letter.
Or better still, if it's a Postcard they'll probably keep it for further reference.
I know I have a draw where I put many possible 'associated' contacts in.
It's amazing how they come in useful sometimes a year or so down the line.

I don't know whether you have already tried this but you can place flyers in the newspapers in your area.

It will help people looking for a plasterer to find you quickly..

The content of the flyer could be similar to what Pete has just told.

It may not bring a lot of money but it will help you to connect with people and they could recommend your services to their friends, colleagues and relatives.

            Hope that helps,

            Stupid question but:

Do you have a web site for your plastering business?

A UK search with Google adwords keywords tool (as an indication)

            plastering 201,000
            plasterer 33,100
            plastering contractors 1,900
            plastering training 2,900
            plastering course 12,100
            diy plastering 1,900
            plasterers 49,500
            courses plastering 27,100

Seems to be lots of scope promoting
            1. your plastering business
            2. plastering info product

Those figures look good until you see what gets clicked.

Usually the 'Thompsons', 'Yell.com' and the now the hundreds of other "Directories" out there that get paid listings into the headers..

              My own site is always on page1 of Google, Yahoo, MSN when people type in local keywords like;
plastering reading berks; or plasterers reading berks, plastering berks, etc, etc,

But I usually only receive a few enquiries a week from the web for WORK.

(I only leave it up so that I can pass the work on to my sons these days)

I DO however, get phone calls coming at me from every conceivable web-promotion company out there. So it's a double edged sword really.
